yeah man! dusting off some brain cells remembering this one. MTV, sophomore in HS. playing in my first metal band HIDDEN DANGER, la mesa, suburb of san diego. our bassist's name was john lennon, we'd hang at his house every weekend to rehearse, chase girls, and watch MTV. prior to my stoner days. two beers would do me all night, and I'd still puke. haha. those were the days.

According to Greek myth, the name of the Ferryman was Charon and he was a tricky shit. You see, the mourners would put a coin on each eye of their deceased loved one and these coins were for Charon as fee for passage across the River Styx. However, halfway across the river, Charon would demand half payment, the drowned souls in the River Styx would cry out and tell the passenger not to do it! If you paid Charon one coin for half of the journey, the little shit would push you overboard and you would drown forever in the River Styx. NEVER pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side!!

*lyrics* It was late at night on the open road Speeding like a man on the run A lifetime spent preparing for the journey He is closer now and the search is on Reading from a map in the mind Yes there's the ragged hill And there's the boat on the river And when the rain came down He heard a wild dog howl There were voices in the night, ("Don't do it") Voices out of sight, ("Don't do it") Too many men have failed before "Whatever you do Don't pay the ferryman Don't even fix a price Don't pay the ferryman Until he gets you to the other side" In the rolling mist then he gets on board Now there'll be no turning back Beware that hooded old man at the rudder And then the lightning flashed, and the thunder roared And people calling out his name And dancing bones that jabbered and a-moaned On the water And then the ferryman said "There is trouble ahead So you must pay me now, " ("Don't do it") "You must pay me now, " ("Don't do it") And still that voice came from beyond "Whatever you do Don't pay the ferryman Don't even fix a price Don't pay the ferryman Until he gets you to the other side" Yeah! Don't pay the ferryman Don't even fix a price Don't pay the ferryman Until he gets you to the other side Don't pay the ferryman Don't even fix a price Don't pay the ferryman Until he gets you to the other side Don't pay the ferryman Don't even fix a price Don't pay the ferryman Until he gets you to the other side Don't pay the ferryman.

Although Chirs De Burg is mostly recognized for his softer ballads which are many; this song is one rockin, crank it up, rock n roll driver of a song. Apparently in concert is was often the closing piece with a light show that paralyzed the audience to numbness..........a most positive numbness I would think.

I remember this song from 1982. Great song and The Getaway is a good album. It sucks that this guy is only remembered for The Lady in Red.

Sure is.Chris has a lot of good tunes. Here’s two more underrated, Al Stewart and Chris Rea. All three have massive great albums and really great songs.

Bad ass tune,,,,I wouldn't haven remembered if it wasn't for my friend that showed me it...I haven't heard it since the early 80's. Couldn't even believe it when I heard it again after all these years...We are gonna try and redo it a little heavier...Killer tune!

@@patrickkparrker413 You call this a "decent track", deserved, but would you not call 'The Ecstacy Of Flight', 'Blonde Hair Blue Jeans', 'The Getaway', 'Last Night', 'Dont Look Back', 'High On Emotion', 'Spanish Train', and many more "decent tracks". Or perhaps you have only heard 'The Lady In Red' and 'Dont Pay The Ferryman', and since you disliked The Lady In Red you simply concluded every song by Chris de Burgh is shit. Don't think you would even have the right to judge Chris de Burgh's music after only having listened to two songs out of his widely varied catalogue. I'd like to hear back from you after you've listened to at least a few albums of Chris de Burgh. You might want to try starting out with 'The Getaway', 'Man On The Line' or 'This Way Up'.

"Don't Pay The Ferryman" It was late at night on the open road, Speeding like a man on the run, A lifetime spent preparing for the journey; He is closer now and the search is on, Reading from a map in the mind, Yes there's the ragged hill, And there's the boat on the river. And when the rain came down, He heard a wild dog howl, There were voices in the night - "Don't do it!" Voices out of sight - "Don't do it! Too many men have failed before, Whatever you do, Don't pay the ferryman, Don't even fix a price, Don't pay the ferryman, Until he gets you to the other side;" In the rolling mist, then he gets on board, Now there'll be no turning back, Beware that hooded old man at the rudder, And then the lightning flashed, and the thunder roared, And people calling out his name, And dancing bones that jabbered and a-moaned On the water. And then the ferryman said, "There is trouble ahead, So you must pay me now," - "Don't do it!" "You must pay me now," - "Don't do it!" And still that voice came from beyond, "Whatever you do, Don't pay the ferryman, Don't even fix a price, Don't pay the ferryman, Until he gets you to the other side; Don't pay - the ferryman!"
