Back in 1993, 20 years before his historic 166-day space voyage as the first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station, Chris Hadfield was a relatively unknown test pilot, one of 4 new Canadian astronauts. He and his family had just moved to Houston the year before to support his long-held dream of space travel. the fifth estate’s Hana Gartner talks to Hadfield’s parents and wife to find out why the Milton, Ontario boy had the right stuff. And she goes with Hadfield aboard a spaceship to find out what daily life in space entailed.
the fifth estate is celebrating our 40th season and we are taking a look back at some of the people and places we have featured on the program.
To celebrate our 40 years on the air, we’re doing something we’ve never done before : turn the cameras on ourselves. Join us on Secrets of the fifth estate. Tune in Thursday April 9th at 9 PM on CBC Television.

Operative word being "can". He's the best at almost everything he does. Simple math says that in a given context only 1 can be "the best". And this man is the "best" over and over - Crushing the dreams of number 2 at several turns along the way. I have oceans of respect and admiration for Commander Hadfield. And you should strive to be the best you can be at whatever you endeavour. But let's not delude ourself that because this extraordinaty man can do it - Everyone can do it. It stands to reason that only a very few individuals can be "the best" in a given context - We can't call be "the best".

I love this. His parents say, "he's a very capable human being". Despite being so extraordinary gifted in nearly every respect, they're so modest.

you're wrong, he's not 'gifted' -- he trained and studied hard in order to acquire the skills.

@@jamess9579 I'm not wrong. He's extremely bright (naturally (i.e. gifted)) AND did the hard work to acquire the skills.

@@david.stachon you are wrong, anybody could learn what he does with the same environment, dedication, and training. It's not easy, but anybody could. There is no such thing as natural 'brightness'. He trained and worked. That's all.

@@jamess9579 No. I'm sorry. No. In the same way there are gifted athletes, there are gifted minds as well. Einstein just didn't work harder than everyone else.
@jamess9579
@jamess9579 3 жыл бұрын
@@david.stachon But the only reason Einstein realised his potential was through an incredible amount of study and training, without that he would be capable of nothing -- there is no gift. If there is such as thing as natural aptitude, it certainly does not kick in until a level far beyond what Chris Hadfield's intellectual capabilities are (his level of intelligence is not even comparable to Einsteins, orders of magnitude apart). Thus, I still maintain that 95% of all people, with the right practice, training, and dedication, could obtain the skills he has (not knocking him, I am very impressed by the work he must have put in to get where he is).

Chris always fills my heart with joy and happiness. I can't quite put my finger on it, but to me he is the most wonderful role model that I think mankind has in this moment. I think he has the capability of all tasks seem insignificant. He had journeyed into the unknown and has suffered for us to bring us knowledge back to earth. Not only had he helped expand three boundaries of space exploration; but he has shown me as a growing young man what a man should be like in this world of every changing unknowns. Not only that but I think he shows every human what humans can be. The news is always filling is with dread and angst but this man is walking proof that you can be the best human you are capable of being. God bless you Mr Hadfield may you forever shine bright in these dark times.
