Thoroughly enjoying these podcasts. Some amazing insight into such an iconic car. If I ever see Chris Harris, the first thing I'm doing is asking for a ride in his car!

I remember an old friend of mine was recruited to work on the F1 road car project and worked for Dr. Udo Zucker on the engine management system. He was taken on to 'productionise' the process as up until then McLaren only made small batches of formula one bits. Ironically his background in electronics started with a pinball machine manufacturer! He went on to help harmonise & standardise McLaren's i.t. network systems when they still-operated from multiple buildings.

Learning so much from these wonderful podcasts..always wondered about the V12 and its origins..so an element of truth in that it’s underpinnings were from two S54b32s...

Excuse me? The S70 was tested in an M5 Touring? An E34, as opposed to the two S62 M5 estates? And it still exists? I don't think there will ever be a better car than that.Just the thought of that thing is beyond mental. This is a very interesting podcast. Thank you for posting it.

Coincidental that touring is the dream car.

Believe he was referring to the X5 Le Mans which has the S70. Not sure if an SUV, such as an X5, is classified as an estate car. Estate cars tend to be touring/wagons.

Thing is, there was no X5 when the S70 was pre-production tested, that was over 10 years later. And the X5 Le Mans was later still. Early 2000s, I think? The X5 Le Mans is pretty famous, so, while not impossible at all, I don't think a car nut like Chris Harris wouldn't know about it.

@@SqurilYou're right. I thought he said X5, not M5. Surprising how there is nothing written about it. I'm guessing it is in their collection of one-off cars.

I have that issue of evo where it said a tatty McLaren F1 race car sold at auction for £350k, I think it was 2004. Why? Because money was cheap. Even more dangerously credit was cheap but you could still get a return on your cash in the bank. Nothing had any value. So why the change now? ZIRP. That caused a rush into assets. Low volume high quality cars traded like poker chips. These cars are being used as a storage of money.
