Ive binged every episode up to this point. WOW this podcast is absolutely unbelievable. The stories, honesty, and unearthed reviews are unreal. Thanks guys

As a 964 owner, very interesting stuff and just simply entertaining. When I hear from those times where an RS could be bought for less than 40k, I go silently cry in a corner. But then by owning a simple not RS one, I feel blessed enough.

Finished the whole episode. Well what can I say. There is some online content like Drive with Chris Harris, Henry's or Jethro's vids for example that are so well done that you do not regret the era of youtube, but for the most, you just regret the passionate articles or tests that transfer emotions, not trying to force you into a marketing/sponsored/overenjoyed box like all that youtubers/influencers out there. They seem to like everything, nothing has flaws and be excited for every new marketing stuff coming out, it's so obvious and not disguised I feel sorry for them. That and starting a video by announcing ridiculously low production numbers and astronomical pricetags to try to convince you it's the best car in the world or that it has some automotive significance. Ultimate proof is they all find the Senna looks good. Wtf right? Keep the interesting talks coming, Thanks!

Savagegeese on KZbin is the only reviewer I am aware of that does quality analytical reviews of new cars even putting them on a hoist to discuss the mechanicals.

Indeed, he does the 'angry' thing so brilliantly I'm sure even Monkey would approve. Love that half of each review is spent in the oily depths and the rest ranting on modern car trends.

One of the best stories I read in evo ever. Dickie on 24h Nurburgring driving at night. Damn...that was huge.

Hi Chris, In my humble opinion, reading allows me to participate in the creation of the story in my mind while watching video is almost completely passive. Video when done well can be inspiring and affective, but I am just watching someone else's vision unfold. When I am reading, I use the author's words to create my own vision. Have fun.

The fact that you quoted Shmee as being part of the new Zeitgeist is the perfect illustration of how sad things have become.
@Jimbo80124 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I find Shmee irritating, not especially competent and about as far removed from a motoring journalist as one could possibly imagine. His content is largely poor and he's just been fortunate enough to have a very rich mummy and daddy who indulged all his supercar whims. The rest fell into place. I don't hate on all KZbinrs and Shmee's not the only one to have very wealthy parents (Hoovies Garage). The difference between Shmee and Hoovie is that Hoovie is more talented, more charismatic, funnier and tends to produce far superior, varied content. Hoovie also has humility and doesn't pretend that he's self made person prior to KZbin which Shmee does. I think it's dishonest and it rankles personally because I created a successful business and know how hard it is to get something off the ground.

Yup. All those, Jww, Salomandrin, SOL all do the same stuff, read the press releases and come across as not actually knowing the "meat and veg" side and mechanics. Properly grates on me when they take their car somewhere and they say "we've done this and that" when they've taken it somewhere and paid someone. I think that's the thing with youtube reviews you really struggle to take them seriously as they don't have the credibility of the guys at the magazines

Reading these comments a year later and I think the "new Zeitgeist" is now the new normal. I give Mr JWW a break because I do think he's passionate about motoring and has begun racing. However, the rest of them, esp Salomondrin, wouldn't know a good car if it fell from the sky and landed on his million dollar lawn. I have no interest in people who have no concept of motoring history and just want to show off their latest new super/hypercar. Which does exactly what the one next to that one does and the one next to that one, etc etc. Chris Harris, Dickie Meaden, Harry Metcalf, etc are 10x the drivers those "influencers" are and have 10x the personality.

Ah... Drivers Republic. Where one of the very first videos I saw of someone explaining properly how to do a skid, it was Chris Harris in the video titled "Driving Techniques - Power Oversteer" many, many years ago... That video made me a fan of RWD cars. EVO has been my favourite car magazine since I can remember, great well written articles and amazing photography. Great Britain is the leading country producing the best car journalism there is!

Lovely chat with top fella Dickie chaps - reciprocal respect observation spot on. Your ref to Gus taking a photo of Dickie pawing a 911 front wheel is probably exemplified by Gus, Dickie, Gnasher and I doing our Targa Florio piece in Sicily in Oct 2000 in my Lhd 996/1 V295...Dickie says it was his best evo gig, and I had a ball with the lads playing ‘name that tune’ on their hire car starter button...halcyon days indeed....and yes 1980-1998 seems the sweet spot for me too, thus I seek out 968cs, 450 Seac, R5 turbo, Rs2, Espirit, C/Williams 1, 205 gti, Nsx white run-out model, A610 Alpine, Alfasud cloverleaf et al....Keep it up Christophe 😉

I remember Richard buying his 964 RS. I had seen one out dragging a Ferrari 355 near York and actually preferred the sonorous engine note of the Porsche to the razor sharp banshee wail of the Italian car. I was actually on my way to viewing a wail tail Sierra Cosworth for £7k at the time. I know Dikkie always liked the integra type r and remember him likening its ethos to that of a Porsche RS. I ran many an integra off the back of this, and miss the same paired back nature in modern cars; too much weight denies dynamic agility and involvement. I still have Chris's autocar review of the evo 6 air born. Great days the hey days...

Being a person who read Fast Lane magazine ( the Evo of it's day) and even today still owning the first 20 issues of Evo, I have to say I no longer read cars magazines. In the past I used to spend ages , mainly on the bog, looking through them cover to cover. Quick skim through, then select the best articles then the third read through was cover to cover. I could spend an hour looking at the performance data page in Autocar, the mph / 1000 rpms and speed in gears having a terrible fascination. Only if it was tasty though. The panic that ensued if it had sold out on Wednesday for the one car of the month you really want to know the 30-70 time of. I now prefer this medium though, you can get in depth stuff on the internet if you are prepared to hunt about, for instance this great podcast episode where things were better in the old days - you're just getting old, I know this as I am older than you all! Harry M seems to be trying to be Peter Pan though; I went from your podcast to again watching him review the Carrera Club Sport which is the best Porsche ever. It's the greatest, not some garage queen RS, because it was one of the cars on the Fast Lane tape where Mark Hales drove around Donington Park. I believe it was later owned by some muttering rotter. Great times. Now you have got me going rose tinted. I need to correct myself, let my fingers wander off and go clicking on the pop out banner and turning notifications on ..... I spend so much time looking at stuff on the internet about cars nowadays. I no longer have time to do any driving sadly. The only trip I do is to pop down to the garage for some Navy Cut and my copy of Club International. You really must get Paul Raymond on here Chris. Ah the days of motor shows with TVR bonnet ornaments. Or to be blunt, even the days of having motorshows ! PS I once one Letter of the Month for Performance Car Magazine, or was it Evo, a Casio G shock watch was sent as special thanks. Not sure if that was a comment on the number of crashes I kept having at that point. The letter was about a Morris Ital I once had, Dickie probably remembers it?

My brother used to buy 964 RS's from all over Europe for Josh at Autofarm back in the mid 90's. I think he used to pay about £25k for them then. We drove one to LeMans in 1996 I think, just remember the hard acceleration and lack of anything inside. LHD too if I remember. The 964 in my opinion was and still is the best looking 911 ever, period, full stop. It's the top of the front wings I love and the way the rear slopes from the roof right down to the tail pipes.

One problem for a modern motoring journo is that, really, there are no truly bad cars anymore. Sure, one car might be objectively a few percent better at one particular attribute than another, but mostly it's "shades of grey", and highly subjective. A journo happy with wild cars that oversteer will drive an early F series M3 on a dry wide track and love it for it's ability to drift everywhere. A Journo, less confident in their skills, less experienced in driving over the limit, might drive exactly the same car, but on a wet tuesday evening, and proclaim it to be "lethally snappy"

A lot, not all, but many road tests are done by people who can't drive and have no idea other that" I want to be invited back so I'll repeat the smoke that was blown up my arse." There are a lot of cars being bought by people because someone who can't drive said it was good. I believe Clarkson made his name by writing what he thought.

”Everyone wants a 964 RS.” Why on earth? It is 260 hp version of the 964 with not much difference in weight to the basic Carrera. Just compare the relevant numbers to a basic 996 - and consider the handling. 964 is beautiful, sure, but performance or smiles/miles/cost is not that good.
@aaa84gt5 жыл бұрын
So by that logic a 250 GTO is outdated and should cost £25.000 and not 25.000.000...
@Apexjuha5 жыл бұрын
Adeel A. I dont see your analogy. There is really not a car that is comparable to 250 GTO in the Porsche range. 250 GTO is a real gem, an investment rather than a real car. People dont really buy them to go racing at the track. They buy them as investments and as a piece of art. I can even understand that the 1972 Carrera RS lightweight raises over a million at auctions. But 964 RS is IMO a hugely overrated car in the 911 range. Yes, it is a wonderful car but it realy is not that different from a regular 964. Only 10 hp more and maybe like 30 kgs lighter than the regular car. Thing is 996, the cheapest 911 of all is actually a lot better car to drive. And again that does not mean 964 RS is a bad car to drive. They are all fantastic. I can understand that if it is an air-cooled thing .. but I’d rather take then 1987 Carrera Clubsport or a 996 GT3 RS and I think I would get more value for money. Again, 964 RS is wonderful car. But the price/value ratio is not even near the best ones in the 911 range. 250 GTO is a completely different thing. It is a piece of true art, just like 330/P4 or a Miura, or 206 Dino GT, or say, Bugatti 35, Delahaye what ever. Chris Harris talks about cars he loves to drive. He is not an investor as per ce. He is a driver.
@claudiomarangone61410 ай бұрын
Where did you get your figures? A 964 RS weighs 2706 lbs., 287 pounds lighter than a standard 964 Have you driven a 964 RS? The 964 RS also is seam sealed and gives it a more rigid platform. It also has Heim/Rose joints and firmer bushings all over the place. I have, and compared it to a lot of other Porsches and other cars, the involvement that the RS gives is on a whole other level . There is no comparison between the two, unless you have a highly modified 964. Special car.
