Fair is incredibly subjective. Fair would be a user pays system where users can afford to pay. That is not reality, so tax needs to be pragmatic and also think about who receives the benefit of govt spending. There is a gap with capital gains, which I think Labour could have introduced without too much of a backlash. But they should also look at where the burden of taxation sits. I think they will find it is very progressive already.

Calling landlordship a business is being used to evade the fact that NZ doesn't have enough homes and there's no concrete plan to enable the building of anywhere near what we need to. If Government is powerful enough to shut the country down, then it's surely powerful enough to ensure enough homes are being built. It's the political will to address the emergency that's lacking. Calling landlordship a business is not helping getting NZ families into their own homes with the societal benefits such stability provides to families. Stop glorifying it and the societal split it leads to (which has backfired on ordinarily NZers and is only getting worse).

Well some is business. Especially the ones that are race-based investor groups from abroad with one bloke over here doing all the running around. Their costs are at minimum and their liability is zero. They take the profit offshore.
