Neither promotion has particularly good booking these days but at least WWE has had a few stories in the last few years that were booked pretty damn well. That's just something I haven't been able to say much about AEW. Not crapping on their booking but with AEW, they haven't told one long term story that's kept my attention, usually it's just a hot angle that cools down quickly.

He probably wanted a relationship with Vince Mcmahon like the one he has with Tony Khan, Vince Mcmahon wouldn't have Jericho anywhere near as close to him as TK does, he'd be one of the boys and like it, the fact that Jericho was sat next to Tony Khan at Jay Briscoe's funeral tells you exactly the kind of sycophantic, brown noser, sap sucking scumbag that Chris Jericho really is

He’s never hidden that he likes having a lot of input into what he does and how much it bothered him in WWE when he didn’t. If you have the money and accomplished all you could hope to what else is there? You can work more, have minimal input, be lower on the show or you can work less, have tons of input, be in featured roles and make the same or more than you would. In his position that sounds pretty damn good to me.

If TK wasn't such a Jericho fanboy . do you think Jericho would be able to get away with what he's doing anywhere else? supposedly a 'marquee' wrestler but has no idea of even trying to elevate young talent or trying to at least get some mainstream attention.. There's more attention on a wrestler that isn't even wrestling in AEW at the moment. So it says as much about jericho as anything else.
@imfreviews

Sure he's happy. You know who else is happy in interviews? Anybody who worked in ECW, talking about that promotion. They could do whatever they wanted in the ring, Paul Heyman made them all feel like a million bucks, no one told them what to do. They could be 'creative' and 'be themselves' and 'ply their craft'. It was paradise...until they stopped getting paid. You know who else is happy in interviews? Anybody who worked in Herb Abrams' UWF. Even Mick Foley gushes over it. Same deal. They could do whatever they wanted in the ring, Herb Abrams filled them full of hot air and told them they were awesome, and no one told them what to do. They could be 'creative' and 'be themselves' and 'ply their craft'. It was paradise...until they stopped getting paid. Now, AEW is not in danger of not being able to pay people. But when you don't run your business like a real business, that can become a risk. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday.

Who can blame him? He’s clearly making a lot of money, has a lot more input into what he does than he had in the WWE, gets to help a ton of people by coaching and counseling them, doesn’t have to jump through the constant hoops and changes that come with the WWE process, and to boot works a much more attractive schedule than he would in the WWE. Why wouldn’t that make you happy? Personal taste aside his position is more attractive in every sense if we’re honest about it. He knew his ceiling in the WWE - why work all the time to have minimal input in what you do, a much more intensive schedule, and a lower ceiling if you can go somewhere else and have everything the way you’d like it and make as much if not more to boot? In his spot a lot of us would do the same.

Having no writers is as bad as having too many writers. Not every wrestler is a naturally creative person. For those who aren’t, they should have someone (other than the booker or a more creative wrestler) working with them to help them develop their characters and storylines. Maybe AEW should hire one writer-just one-to effectively be the the voice for the voiceless, preferably without any bias whatsoever. Sure, the booker or a more creative wrestler could help the non-creative wrestlers, but they would be biased. The Booker will want to book what has already worked for them in the past (regardless if it still works) and will favor certain wrestlers over others, while creative wrestlers will naturally want to keep their best ideas for their own characters.

No one is catching the key part, 2:21 - 2:30 "I know wrestling, I know what you guys want to see." Yeah buddy, I believe you. But there is a world of difference between WRESTLING and the WRESTLING BUSINESS. Neither you nor your boss understand that, and it shows in the results of your product. He's totally right that Vince's way isn't ideal either, but at least Vince's way tries (not always successfully) to represent the business, not just the in-ring product.
@joeyclemenza7339
@joeyclemenza7339 Жыл бұрын
you act as though vince created this full proof business plan for all of wrestling... and that's just not true. the only thing he was successful at doing was cornering the market, and a lot of that came at the hands of WCW's demise. had that AOL/Time Warner merger never happen, we would've at least had a shell of WCW to kick around for the next decade. that didn't happen. for nearly 20 years, WWE had a virtual monopoly, creating an easy to indulge in product for would-be fans and soft casuals. it became the mcdonalds of wrestling... ergo, vince doesn't need to do ANYTHING to turn a profit. many people are still convinced that it's the only show in town, and that's just not true. AEW, for only being 4 years old, is slowly and steadily proving that an alternative take to wrestling is great... and provides another avenue into the industry, that yeah!! will absolutely one day gain those casual and would-be viewers. it's not a race, but they will gain. WWE is no longer the only big star at the ball.

@@joeyclemenza7339 An alternative take to wrestling would be great if Jericho wasn't running roughshod over the majority of the roster and using AEW as his personal little sandbox to affect, impact, sway, and influence match and storyline outcomes however he sees fit that will ultimately benefit him more than anyone else. That kind of booking style will become their inevitable demise if it continues along this unsustainable path. This will in no way progress the industry of professional wrestling. It only serves to set it back like WCW did when they let Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall (and later Vince Russo) assume complete control over the creative direction of their feuds and the company at large. There was no filter to run anyone's ideas through, just a bunch of egomaniacs and people way in over their head with power they never deserved to have. Jericho has become the villain he always despised as an up-and-coming star himself, and the cracks are quickly starting to show.
@imfreviews
@imfreviews Жыл бұрын
@@BrendenNichols Well said. Sad that many AEW fans don't see the parallels. And before anyone becomes dismissive - the same thing happened with Shawn Michaels in WWE; similar things happened with John Cena and Steve Austin, to varying degrees. And at the end of the day VINCE MCMAHON IS RESPONSIBLE for allowing such things to happen, because the buck should stop with him. And I'm sure it happened in the territories and even happens to some level in indie promotions. Part of it is the nature of the beast, stars demand to be treated like stars and they draw the money. It was wrong when Vince let Shawn and the Kliq run roughshod over his company, and it's not right the way certain people are allowed to run roughshod over AEW. It does not *appear* that there are any such talent doing that in WWE right now, but who knows for sure.

I like the idea of flexibility - as a former English teacher, the concept of having long term, medium and short term planning that is interwoven makes a lot of sense. The wrestling business is like soap opera writing but with significant chance of injury meaning they need to be able to think on the fly. A lot. The tow biggest problems with AEW (and they can be rectified easily), is (a) the air time given to old guys/small guys/tag guys is too much compared to younger bigger guys (wardlow, hobbs etc). Too much jarrett and hardyz. they are not good in the ring any more. They just arent. And (b) the story telling in a lot of matches (best friends, bucks etc, cassidy, guevara) makes no sense. The number of false finishes from devastating moves is insane. There’s no hinting at moves and setting up finishers, suicide dives in almost every match. MJF appears to be one of the younger talents that actually gets this. The rest seem to be from the school of circus performers and gymnasts. there are often duplicate stories with loads of stables all with similar angles. I wonder if the roster has become too large? I wonder if the flexibility is allowing too many people to get their ideas over and some of them are pretty poor.

I understand his point about what we like to see and don't like to see, but sometimes, giving people what they want all the time, isn't always gonna produce the best matches and stories. Sometimes the best storylines have come from the anger at not getting what we want so the relief is what makes the pop, If everyday I was given my favourite ice cream and it was always great, eventually I'm gonna get bored and have cheesecake, you get me? but if for a week you said I wasn't allowed the ice cream, I'd demand it! haha!! And I know I'm not professional or I've not "been there and done it" because there will always be clowns to find holes... but It's happened time and time again in wrestling, we want something, don't get it, we want it want it want it!!! then it comes and it's amazing

Personally I think most writers are bad for wrestling. Most wrestling storylines aren’t complicated enough to warrant a writer. There should be a booking committee made up of the head booker, an appointed representative for the wrestlers by the wrestlers, a writer and a Pat Patterson type who can workout what actually they want from the match. The head booker has final say, the writer can lay down the basics of the storyline and help wrestlers with promos (almost like a directors role in films), the rep voices concerns and desires of the locker room and the Paterson type guy works out what sort of match up will be the final product. If you look at the most successful eras of wrestling, Hulkamania era, NWO era and the Attitude era, writers did very little, nobody wrote any of the top guys promos, all you need is a steady leader to guide the wrestlers in the direction and let them do their thing. I also think that the 80’s were good as wrestlers that were crap on the mic, still got a push, because there were so many good managers such as the Brain, Slick, Jimmy Hart and Cornett.

He enjoys the idea of him booking, so much so that he can't be objective enough to tell when something is bad. It's like me. I enjoy my matches on wwe 2k. I go "this is so great. It could be match of the year". But I have the right to do that. I'm just a wrestling fan playing a video game. This is supposed to be a professional, and he's become such a mark for himself it's unbelievable. Both he and Moxley, they are such big marks. And by the way, I can tell a movie is bad within 20 minutes. So I don't need to watch an angle until the end to know it's bad. Chris Jericho's angles are bad, and this saddens me because he was one of my favorites growing up. I hope I won't have a mid life crisis. It makes you delusional.

The problem with that sentiment is that wrestling rarely , if ever, has an end - it just keeps going from week to week and you don't know if you've seen the end of a feud until both performers move on to something else, case in point - Are Roman Reigns & Cody Rhodes "ended", or are they not? They're both feuding with other people now but obviously there's still a thread of Cody's "finishing the story", so what then?. I guess we're all supposed to shut up until an angle is old news. Got it.

A cliche as old as time, but one that will always be true: History tends to repeat itself. Jericho is part of that history, and unfortunately, the wrestlers who complain about how they were held back in favor of other talent with more backstage influence secretly (or not so secretly) want a taste of that power for themselves. Jericho isn't fooling anyone. He's only doing what he always wanted to, which is take more creative control that he should have no business taking and turning a company into his little fantasy sandbox. And--what do you know?--it has led to the burial of most of the talent he has worked with since joining the company...

that’s Jericho’s booking not AEW hahahaha. I believe that even though the story isn’t finished, there should be an air of sensitivity towards the audience reception; that midway when we don’t like how the story is, there should be urgency on the side of the wrestlers as well as bookers (in this case, Tony) to respond to our dislike. No doubt they are creative to think of stories but just bc it seems good in theory, it may not be in practice. All the best to AEW though, they’re growing and learning. My only critique not Jericho is that some programs have gone on a bit too long. I don’t think he’s had any bad programs in AEW, either good, great or damn near legendary. The Five Labors was one of my favorite things he’s ever done. He made that American Top Team feud go from cringe to one of the most fun blow off matches of the year. Lionheart shit was so damn good. The Ocho was so much fun. Just sometimes they drag on and lose steam, but that is it. The man is Mt Rushmore material for sure.

To be honest... I never really liked Jericho. I always thought he was a bit of a wanker. Until a couple of years ago when I watched the Chris Benoit documentary 'Dark Side of the Ring'. That's when I his true side. How much he cared for Benoit. Then after the 'incident', how much he helped and cared for Benoit's other son and sister-in-law. I was wrong about Jericho. He is a good man. Always helping others and putting others first. Back to AEW... Jericho paints himself as the heel. But in doing so he helps to push other talent. He puts other wrestlers over. He knows he's had his time at the top and now he uses his legendary status to elevate others.

People are ragging on AEW for their lack of writers, but Vince was notorious for keeping stupid stuff in storyline for nothing more than his own entertainment. Some of the stuff that WWE have created for so long has appealed to mostly children (and by that I mean actual children) and that creates a huge amount of dissonance between the writing and the audience. It's as Jericho says, one week it's a cow then it's a horse then it's it's dragon and then out of nowhere it's like "What cow? What horse? What dragon? Huh?" That's the mindset of Vince McMahon and how he influences his writers. AEW isn't perfect and I will never claim that it is. But it is the closest thing we've got to perfect because it embraces the simple ideology that you don't need shit tonnes of scripts that lead to nowhere and an old man shouting in your ear or in your face to get something as simple as wrestling over. Because the basics of wrestling can be as simple as "You like this wrestler, but you also like this wrestler, so we're gonna have wrestle against each other/alongside each other." If you're a WWE diehard, that's fair. But there is an old adage of stones and glass houses that applies very much so to these people who rag on AEW than for no other reason than because they don't like it. Don't watch it then, like I don't watch WWE because I don't like it anymore. Problem solved.

No doubt AEW creative is better than WWE. Writer's suck. Not for movies and TV shows etc. But for Wrestling they do. Unless it's a in general direction for talent. Talent knows how they talk, know how they feel and know how they would react to a situation. Thats a gold mine waiting to be tapped. But because they arent used to doing that for shows, they have to figure it out or get help developing their ideas on to TV. There is a old saying in wwe that if you get 3 mins TV time. Thats your 3 mins to shine. But its not. Your so guided your actually fitting a cookie cutter mold. Freedom is being able to be you and tell a story you feel comfortable being in and can react to normally.
