That his own team and the on-scene medics didn’t pull him out of the race is nothing short of disgraceful. In what other sport would he be allowed to continue in this state? Ken Hutson I’ve done competitions like that and in the moment you would rather die than quit. Not justifying, just telling you a competitor’s mentality
@jonlauer67548 ай бұрын
@@TheJoker-dj4yq I think you have to think of it from a "what would he think in a right state of mind" perspective- not in the moment. If you've ever been under a ton of bodily stress before, you don't always have mental clarity in those moments. I'm not disagreeing with your conclusion, but I think that's an important qualification to make. At that point, I would say yes, you're right. Even in a saner state, some people would make the choice to try and finish even if it meant potentially getting hospitalized and whatever other risks there might be. But in the moment, an athlete might not be cognizant enough to make a decision. For background, when I've been dehydrated, the progression is such that I'm lulled into thinking I'm just not trying hard enough, even though saner me would have realized I was showing signs of dehydration. Because of this, my entire focus was to try harder and prove to myself I could finish, which just compounded the dehydration. The more dehydrated I got, the more I was confused. Saner me would have realized, yes you can probably finish, but actually your problem isn't that you're not trying hard enough, it's that you've not had enough fluids and salts to replace what you've lost. I've had this experience a number of times, and the lulling is consistent, even though I know in my head what dehydration is and what are its signs. Maybe it's avoidable, but I"m not convinced. I think the only way is through proper preparation and having someone monitor you. I guess my point is that your judgement in the moment is probably not reliable. I can't speak for athletes at such a caliber as Chris, but I'm betting his experience is probably just a far more exacerbated version of mine.

The race organisers should have stepped in and stopped this chap from running. he was clearly in urgent need of medical attention. race marshals should have the power to take someone out of a race who is unfit to continue and when he did collapse why did it take so long until someone came to his assistance? Did they think he might suddenly recover, jump up and finish the race? instead he was allowed to suffer in very obvious distress while everyone looked on and even photographed him and filmed him for television!

@@xblowsmokex - I was wondering about that, too. But, I’m not sure if they offer help… someone else said that they were told medics only step in if they are called by the runner. If that’s the case, he probably didn’t think to call them in his delirious mindset. I feel like medics should at least take a moment to check in with a runner if they collapse. If it’s determined it’s nothing serious, then they can go on, but at least they could see if it was more serious.

I feel for the guy and the fact that he lost some of his intestine. But all for what? So he could win a competition? That's not sacrifice, that's stupidity. Fame and money is not worth losing your health (he was lucky he didn't actually lose his life). I'm sorry, I'm not trying to troll here, but people sometimes mistake great acts of egotistic spupidity for bravery.
@chrislegh148410 жыл бұрын
With all due respect for your opinion, I'm not sure it counts as egotistical when I can't remember most of that day......all I can say is, the body's inate ability to do what it started out to do is an amzing thing. I don't consider myself stupid or egotistic, and perhaps you should know me and the situation before you use such words.
@julekmeister10 жыл бұрын
chris legh I'm sorry. But I didn't call you stupid, I said the act itself was stupid. Trying to finish a race for the cost of one's health or life is just the kind of behaviour I find puzzling. The numbers just don't add up. What do you gain after winning? Fame, recognition, money, respect? Is it worth losing your health? Ofcourse not. And there is a difference between pushing your body to the max and harming it.
@bradstone316010 жыл бұрын
I have gotten myself to nutritional/hydration deficiencies that, once reached, I could not mentally figure out. Knowing something is wrong, but not being able to figure out what, while your brain is constantly focusing on just moving forward, can foil like this. I can think of a time where I messed up and rode the last 60 miles of a long ride in the heat, feeling horrible while dehydrated. I knew I was thirsty, but couldn't figure out what to do. I still had water in my bottles when I was done. Luckily, it did not get to the point where Chris was, but I can certainly understand how mentally you can know something is wrong while still not being able to figure out how to fix the problem.
