Chris Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, are facing backlash for their decision to demolish a historic home, known as the "Zimmerman House," to build a new mansion. I don't really see a problem with it. The house was ugly.

I do notice how people like to get away from the past and have their own statement with architecture or fashion. But bringing back mid century modern Saying it is so great as opposed to things that are more ornate is foolish. If you look at all the beautiful stuff that was produced in the 1880s through the 19 teens that stuff was far more impressive as it was produced with craftsmanship. Ornate it was but it was fascinating and beautiful, and I’d rather look at those things than a bunch of steel silver cubes.

I agree we don’t need to preserve every example of historical architecture… but though I’d never heard of it before, a quick search reveals that the house did seem to be rather unique. dated mid-century houses can still be renovated and updated without destroying their defining character, and while it might not be the best house for a big family, it’s certainly not “bad architecture.” openness and nice views can be very nice things in a home, and the mid-century offerings of south California can indeed be very beautiful. it’s a shame the house is no more, but I suppose if it was truly historical significant, then some preservation agency should’ve purchased it and taken charge 🤷🏻‍♂️

I live in a mid century house, and I chose it specifically because it is of that design. It is open inside, sunny, with decent sized bedrooms. I happen to think that older homes like Victorian homes are dark, inefficient and completely unsuitable for modern living, and more modern homes are mundane and beige. There is an entire area of my town full of Victorians, good and bad, and they can’t be changed. Just because you think that it is unattractive doesn’t mean it is. Story time: we own a mid-century home made of limestone that has an UGLY limestone wall in the living room. It’s dingy looking, yellowed, gray, rusty colors - can’t even clean it to make it look nice. That color is what it is. We are remodeling the house and told our designer that we wanted to drywall over it, bad put a fresh modern stack stone around for fireplace and she flipped. You CAN’T do that! This is all the rage - mid-century!” She made us feel like we were doing something wrong. But I can’t express enough how much we HATE that wall. We talked to the construction supervisor to express our displeasure and he said, “It’s YOUR house and you have to live with it. If you don’t like it, drywall over it and make it what you want.” He must have said something to the designer cuz the next time she came, she was much more agreeable with what we wanted to do. Can’t wait to see this transformation in June. The supervisor is the whole reason we hired them to do the rest of the house after they remodeled our family room.

I’m an interior designer that specializes in historic preservation, so I do not see it as “perverse” as you said… and what a strange choice of words. Homes in the USA are built of cardboard and they don’t last. People don’t take care of their homes. They just live there until the house starts to need major renovations and then they abandon it and move on to the next house. The prospective buyers are then left with an overpriced junk heap that will be a money pit whether they restore or remodel. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That’s why so many older neighborhoods look like garbage. That being said, it’s his house and he can do whatever he wants with it. It’s just funny that people who are absolutely *disturbed* by ugly old 1920’s civil war statues being torn down are rushing to his defense about tearing down a historic home. So it’s bad to tear down a statue because we don’t like to erase history, but it’s cool to tear down a historic home because history only matters when it’s on our side? Mmmkay…

I'm in school studying architecture, I haven't heard of Craig Ellwood at all in lecture in regards to modernism in California, or in the US in general. On Archdaily, the worlds most poular internet based platform for architecture projects and design, his tag has one article attributed with it, and it's not even related to the Ellwood-Zimmerman House. Architecture in general, borders the line of art and practical construction, so I can understand the desire to preserve buildings that help to tell the story of architectural history. But if this building by Ellwood was a 'gem' in the eyes of modernists and post-modernists, why is there such a lack of background on the architect and the other buildings in his historical collection? Why 'mourn' what might have been and attack an innocent who just bought it when it wasn't even considered a heritage site? It's better for those who are actually interested and involved in architectural preservation to research Ellwood and see the merit his other remaining projects have.
