I spent 8 years in the 82nd 1st/504th as an 11B and had the pleasure of having some Delta Ninjas come through our COP for a very short period of time. I was on my 2nd deployment and was still very much an E nothing and I remember being in awe of these guys. We worked with guys from the 3rd and 7th SF group sporadically but I had never run into Delta before. The one thing that has stuck with me was how genuine, aware and humble they all were. One of them must have spent 30 minutes giving me a crash course on how to more efficiently operate and manipulate the SAW I was carrying and in a very practical manner explained how to maximize its combat effectiveness and reliability. It was invaluable advice based on practical experience that I never forgot

This was by far my favorite episode. I wasn’t a Delta operator, I was just a lowly SGT in the 82d who served on 3 long deployments, and 1 really short but terrible one. There was so much about my service and my struggles that I could relate with. Thank you to Chris for sharing all of this. I need to figure out how to internalize some of this stuff. I refuse to take the pills the VA gives… didn’t have a good experience either. I still have zero ideas on how to reinvent myself. I need to get away from my field because I feel like It’s just reliving my experiences over and over. I sleep like crap, health is not great, etc. I need a change. I need the wilderness, and time. For me this was the best interview you’ve ever had. Chris was so relatable to me. Learning we have kids the same ages and that we have struggled with the same demons had me glued to the screen. I'm glad Chris is taking some of the stigma out of addiction, mental health issues, TBI, PTSD and eve the effects of Secondary PTSD. I didn't know it had a name or was even being studied but I know it is a real thing. I've seen it firsthand. He is a real American Hero, not only for his service, bravery and combat experience plus combat and career success but because he is exposing the dark side of it all and saying, it is ok to be frank and open about these things. People shouldn't judge but they do, but again back to what Chris said Tom Satterly told him when he was speaking of writing his book, "They are going to be haters no matter what!" I don't know you, but I am proud of you for fighting your demons and speaking about it here. Keep up the great effort and work you have put in so far. Speaking about such criticized and taboo topics can only get better if people open up and share their stories and what may have helped them. Everyone of us are different in finding things that help us cope, so they are not one cookie cutter facility, therapist or magic potion going to help every individual person the same way. So all ideas need to be heard and welcomed. What worked for me may not work for you, but it may help the lady down he road some and what you have done may help her as well. Anyways m proud of you, keep that head up, keep fighting even though it's a struggle sometimes so hard, and keep telling your story to whoever will listen. You never know when someone may hear or overhear your story and something clicks and they want help then.

I pointed my family swat friend to this episode and the sufferring podcast. The stigma was super real back then. I was there 01' and 03' among others. Got off a plane no talk about mental health long before PTS was a thing they sent me to anger management classes. When I finally started seeking help for real 4 deployments 12 years later they medically retired me. These podcasts are so important to me. I am glad everyone can relate in some way to the struggles.

Sean, you are becoming a tremendous interviewer. You get at it with your questions. You understand the guest and the subject matter. There is a respect based on your mutual service, so that when you ask a direct question going at the truth in the moment, your guest respects your position to be asking the question in the first place, and proceeds to open up about what are surely difficult memories and emotions to confront. This is an authentic and powerful podcast. And Chris, what a life you have lived. This was an incredible story. I’m very happy to see Chris focusing on the on going therapy to not only get things going but keeping them going. Shawn, you have an incredible show. If I’ve learned anything in my career it is to listen. You are not only a great listener but know when to slow it down, ask the tough questions that folks need to hear. Thank you

Both parts of the Vansant interview are riveting. A truly rare guest - unique experiences, highly skilled, intelligent, articulate and so self-aware. Never gets bogged down in bravado, or flag waving. And great work Shawn to ask just the right questions but otherwise know when to listen.

This is such a moving and beautiful episode. I gotta say that Mr Van Sants recollection of his earlier life’s adventures I found very inspiring. Being up front with his roadblocks, and his substance abuse, just so inspiring. I also have work injuries and issues with meds, I have watched this podcast several times, I’m just a huge fan.

Shawn, I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for your show and the sheer strength of your hero guests. I've recently come across your pod when I was ready to choose a bullet than face my own demons. I'm still a work in progress, but im here to work. I love you , your show, your guests, and the power of hope and strength it has given to someone like myself.

Seth, we found a good place here, it has helped me in the same way. Looks like your a fellow dirt rider! We've never met but I'm glad your here to put in more work. We all have a purpose on this earth, sometimes its just not easy to see. I'm not tryin to preach but as soon as I read your comment I couldn't pass by without sharing one of my favorite Bible verses. Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. If your a 4stroker keep braaapin, and if your a 2stroker keep that ring a ding ding on the pipe!

@Jared45513 Wow, I really appreciate your words and the time you took to share your thoughts. I have struggled and watched 5 of my friends check out. I keep sayin that ain't me, but honestly I can't see a bottom to the darkness so anything is possible. I've been doing good tho. Me and my boys ride 4x4 quads. Sand dunes, rock crawls, mountain trails and snow, we get it year round. God bless you friend, thank you.

"I can't do it by myself" - BRAVO Chris !!! For everyone who struggles thru life's difficult times, that is probably the most important thing to realize. Especially for men (and warfighters) who often times think that they can't show weakness. Well done Sir. Keep up the great work !!

One of the best interviews from a former service member on here. Chris' mental health troubles stemming from the loss of his friends and his substance abuse is very humbling. These guys are portrayed as super soldiers but they are all human at the end of the day. Chris clearly struggled, and still does, but he made his way through it, and i think everyone is glad to see it. A very humble, respectful guy. And a great story teller. Getting that help and talking to someone takes alot of guts. Many times you'll want to talk about how you feel and it just catches in your throat. I'd like to see Chris write about his experience, and take up more media. He's good at this. Everyday is a struggle. Just keep on going.

I remember Christopher Speer, I was on the ground and right by him when the grenade went off from the guys throwing them over the walls. Lost 2 of our local forces at the breach point right off the bat. Then everything hit the fan and I’ll never forget that. Once we got word Chris passed, his team and our team had a small ceremony out front of our place and I’ll never forget seeing his rifle with his baseball cap 🧢 hanging on his rifle and everyone’s kind words about him. To this day I never forgot about that man and what an amazing individual. We’ll link up again and Shawn keep up the good work! People don’t hear alot about the early days of Afghanistan and Iraq when everything kicked off, that was my time frame and I was able to catch both invasions, the universes has a way.

Shawn, you have the best military podcast out their. I find it hard calling it a ‘podcast’ because the production value is so high quality and outstanding I feel like i’m watching a good TV show. The guests are all incredible and interesting. Your questioning and demeanour is calming and your genuinely invested in the conversation it has a broad appeal even my wife likes watching these. I watch all of them until the end, some more than once (especially the JTF2 one being a Canadian myself, it was eye opening). I share your clips with others who might not watch these types of interviews. I always look forward to the next. Keep up the incredible, captivating and compelling interviews. Cheers from Canada!

I literally did the same thing after my last tour, and for several years after. I’d put kids to bed, pop pills, and drink to fall asleep. I’ve lost around 100 professional and personal friends and communication has saved my life. Inpatient treatment with Vietnam veterans has also been a crucial part of my life that has provided me tools to continue improving my QOL. No barriers warriors helped me with communication and I hope all veterans can find a path after they exit. Don’t let your service be the only factor that defines you.

Chris is so honest and genuine. Takes a lot of courage and guts to do that. Shawn is top-notch as always and asks just the right questions in a very respectful way. Again, takes and operator to know an operator. Lets the quest talk and at the same time shares some bits and pieces himself. Really enjoyed that interaction :)

My mortar platoon had a gun at the CMIC and a couple at K2 in Bayji and one at the palace in Tikrit in 03. Bayji was always a pretty hot area because of the refinery and there were a lot of Baath loyalists there during my time. Edit: Not saying any of that to downplay what happened after. Just saying that place always kinda sucked for us. I know things really ramped up in your time.

This is some of the best therapeutic content available. People talking about a problem that others can identify with. It brings it to the forefront and makes you realize that there are others going through this kind of stuff and there are healthy ways to deal with it. Bravo Shawn, never stop this show. I don't see why this won't blow the roof off the podcast scene for mental health.

Listening to Chris' story of his PTSD has reinforced in me that my Father suffered greatly from this after Vietnam. He's been gone since 92, I never really knew him but have heard stories of his life after the war. He served as a Marine infantryman and sniper. My grandfather would tell me that he returned from that place a very different man and that he suffered greatly. I wish they had this kind of insight for these men back then i may have known him or at least he could have had some help to deal with his demons. Thank you both Chris and Shawn for your service.
