Hey Shawn, you're right, 19:00 Eric Haney, in his book "Inside Delta Force" and the TV show, "The Unit" he mentions that tier 1 SF operators are usually oldest, with a sense of protecting the younger children and/or abused as children so they are able to take the abuse that selection brings. Your last guest is a prime example of this (abuse).

The way Saddam Hussein was executed, I always felt the Iraqi people never truly gotten justice for Saddam's brutal reign. It was strange how Saddam was executed on the Islamic Holiday of Eid al-Adha. (*when reading up on this holiday, it made me go huh.) It was also strange how he was executed removed from public eye in a dark below-ground execution chamber. And, when that cell footage leaked of the execution, it felt very occultic/ritualistic.

First time I saw Shawn's podcast, I thought "this guy looks too regular, no way a guy that vaguely reminds me of Popeye is gonna be a good conversationalist and interviewer." I was wrong. Shawn is as good at this as Johnny Carson. He knows what to say, and when a guest mentions something that is/was ridiculous, Shawn laughs so sincerely he has me laughing too. He is outstanding at this type of work.

Absolutely. Then we see people walking around trying to play tough guy with no clue guys like this just live their life and do so trying to be their best humble selves. Yet this guy has done some very unnerving things in defense of this country. To say nothing of the fact he did so having to say goodbye to some of his brothers who also did the same and made a sacrifice to try and set a precedent that if you plan to harm this country they’re prepared to die for it. And I’m going to think I scare anybody? Ya right.

Chris might be my favorite guest yet on the SRS. All of Shawn's guests have had fascinating stories and deserve the highest level of respect but they haven't all been great interviews. Given what they've suffered in combat some struggle with their ability to communicate/articulate. Chris is an incredible communicator and his way of retelling stories is very engaging. His humility and his "regular guy" persona makes him super relatable.

After listening to multiple Tier 1 guys, the type of person they are looking for is becoming more clear. You need the right degree of the following, grit and determination, high level of commitment with everything you do, brain that can process high level of inputs and still function at high capacity, teamwork mentality in every sense of that word, high emotional IQ….by spelling it out makes me understand even more just how special these guys are.

Don't forget the physical demands. The thing about these Tier One, highly elite, tip of the spear units, once you are in and established, there is no one barking at you to do PT, to force you on miles long marches, screaming about your performance level. That is entirely on you and the unit expects you to maintain your physical readiness at all times. If you let yourself slip and are not able to perform at the level required on incredibly demanding missions, then pack your shit and down the road you go....you're out.

Men that deal with problems that they can’t seem to conquer is emotions that’s the one thing that most veterans don’t want to step into normal with normal thoughts but they’re the most of Americans that have major traumatic emotional traumatizing stress they deal with it in a very narcissistic immature matter like teaching people how to shoot fire arms that have PTSD like themselves like Chris Kyle they got killed shelter their emotions with anger fear aggression causing problems with others and alcohol and drug abuse that they follow and fall into why can’t these men learn how to surrender their emotional pain why are there so attracted to fear what’s the hold up why can’t they conquer their own emotional turmoil stress shooting firearms isn’t gonna make their emotional issues go away it’s going to amp it up that’s where we get mass shooters

I have dealt with my own issues as well as ministered to others who have been touched by war. My favorite episodes are those where veterans share their sacred stories. Shawn provides them a healing platform. I also appreciated the focus in secondary PTS. Chris seems like such a solid, genuine, good guy and when I picture America and it’s military forces, this is the type of person I envision and hope they can all be. I have to say, every time I hear about heroes like Chris van Sant talk about how much they have given up to protect our country and how much they have struggled after leaving (to the point of suicide in countless cases), I am filled with rage against the government who asked so much and gave so little back. With the kind of money and resources this country has, how is it even possible that we have a single veteran in the streets or struggling with mental health with no support?

My father is a Vietnam veteran. He is a marine. I expressed my desire to follow in his footsteps as I was graduating high school in 2002 and he begged me not to. He has shared some very detailed and mind bending stories from his service. I still think at times I regret not going in but I look at my son and I'm glad I didn't.

My dad was a Marine in Vietnam and I tried to join the marines.. my dad told the recruiter to GTFO when he stopped by. I joined the Navy.. but the switched my MOS to Corpsman and added a year to my enlistment when I got to boot camp. My dad was not happy. I served in the 90’s and got out. 9-11 happened and I wanted to reenlist.. my dad tried to talk me out of it and I didn’t listen. I was in the Army this time.. I got back from my first tour in Iraq and my dad said to me”hat look on you face right now is why I never wanted you to join”

I missed my calling to join and I have some regrets about it and now I don't think that's a problem for you.

My dad was also a Vietnam combat vet, Army though. He did two tours with a helicopter assault company stationed at Marble Mountain Airbase in Da Nang. He was an M-60 sidegunner on a Chinook, and after Nam he spent pretty much his entire life in the army as an NCO. Most of my young childhood he was a drill sergeant, that became his passion. That was "fun" lol, taught me how to be respectful though. Eventually his rank got too high to wear the hat, but he kept going. He lived and breathed Army. When he died suddenly in the early 2000s he was still serving as an E-9 CSM. I idolized him (and also feared him when I was a kid lol). He was a great man, tough as nails, very respectable. Moral and dependable to a fault. But he also had PTSD, he could fly into these rages if provoked, to the point his eyes would go black. Scary as hell, he was not a small man either. He said the same thing as your dad did. I used to want to be an infrantyman, or maybe artillery, I was obsessed with becoming a decorated combat vet like my dad. He never ever encouraged me to do that lol, he told me to avoid the service and go to college. Get educated and then go the OCS route if I was truly deadset on the Army. Young and dumb, I used to think his advice was so lame, don't go enlisted? Avoid combat? In the MILITARY? WTF? My life took a different path and I never served. Now that I am older and somewhat wiser, I wish he was alive so I could thank him. He really was just trying to look out for me, because he knew things I didn't. Your dad obviously really cares about you, cherish him please.

Hey Shawn. Love your interviews. As someone who was just diagnosed with somewhat advanced heart failure at 52, I want to encourage you to at the very least, get an Echo Cardiogram. Basically an ultrasound of the heart, it gives the best initial idea as to whether you need more testing or if everything is ok. Things like Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy can go undiagnosed, as they have very few symptoms. Take the "message from the Universe" in interviewing Chris and get checked out. Can't wait for round 2 and look forward to many more years of enjoying you and your guests stories. God Bless and thank you from Canada.

Great video Shawn and great overall work. I just turned 70 a few weeks ago but I am still young at mind. This interview was particularly interesting for me because I served with the 82nd a very, very long time ago, 1973 to 1976. My time there changed my life for the better because of two people, my squad leader, an E-6 who served in Vietnam with the 173d Airborne Brigade and my platoon leader an E-7, SFC who was a Green Beret and served multiple tours in Vietnam. They put me on a path of maturity and college education that eventually led me to become an FBI for 25 years. I owe so much to them. You do great work Shawn, so thank you for what you do!! AATW!!!

Having a leader who cares makes ALL the difference. All I ever had were people who looked at your back to see how they could step on it if the time came. I never saw anyone have anyone's back from senior leadership, something I was warned about for the two units I went to, and it's the primary reason I got out as I never saw anyone who cared for others. I tried, but a LT can only do so much. I knew some SF guys when I was active duty, and they were all like Chris. Well-spoken and well-travelled with a heaping dose of "there I was," and an amazing way to tell those stories when they want. Thanks for posting this, it's a great interview!
