Dear Dr Grande, Dr Smith and Dr Pincin, I'm so happy to see you in a new episode. To me, the main reason the Watts case became so popular, is because for the first time we have almost all the timeline's live footage (except for the homicide, luckily). Her friend talking with the cops, Watts arriving home, and so on... I remember I was stunned and terrified watching like in a live show the developing of the most horrible crime imaginable. Even the *before* was documented- by the victim. It's like fiction and reality collapses, it has something like from Philip K. Dick... (sorry for my english, I'm from Europe) Thank you again for the very interesting contents you share with us

Amber Frey dated Scott Peterson before there was social media. She had no easy way to dispute what he told her, that he had lost his wife. Chris Watts might have told Nichol Kessinger he was divorcing his wife, but she had easy access to Shanann's social media posts. She looked her up well before she and Chris began their relationship. She cannot feign innocence in the same way Amber could.

Cello Pam To me Nicole gives the impression of being callous and manipulating. She couldn't give a f... about Shannan and the girls. I even had the impression she is proud that a married man erased his family for her. Amber is either an extremely good actress or she really was very upset when she heard what Scott did to his wife/son. I give Amber the benefit of the doubt though. NK doesn't come across a likeable person. She is selfish and self-centered and every word one can think of that starts with self...!
@loulabelle508211 ай бұрын
@@martinamoskale2445but that just speculation and we are all biased now because a lady and 2 little girls died. It colours how you feel about her. We villainize her because of what happened to the family. Looking objectively at the evidence, I dont believe she had anything to do with the murders. Her behaviour afterwards might put a bad taste in people's mouths but none of us know how we would react in a situation as insane as this. And some people ARE selfish and look after their own self interests first. It's easy to dissect every little thing she does and filter it through the "dark, evil, selfish bitch" filter because we know about the dark, evil and selfish way the murders were committed. Shes not sold her story or written a book. Maybe we should give her the benefit of the doubt until she does something like that.

I really think that the fascination with this case is because we saw it play out on video nearly real time from Shanann arriving home, the body cam investigation, the neighbor's security video, the interrogation, confession, arrest, aftermath interviews with the mistress, plea deal and sentencing. Also, it's extremely satisfying watching him squirm on camera as the police, her friend and his neighbor figure out he is responsible right in front of him.

Supposedly, Nikki Kessinger spoke frequently about Shannan's spending, including the expensive school the girls' attended. She probably made it seem that it would be cheaper and easier to dispose of his family, so she could reap the rewards. Also, it's weird that Kessinger's phone pinged in Frederick on the morning the murders took place, while she lived 25 minutes away and never took that route to work.

Always love listening to you guys! Two notes/comments: 1. I think the general public liking Amber Frye and disliking Nicole Kessinger comes down to one thing that wasn’t mentioned in this episode - Amber was completely duped by Scott and believed he was unmarried, then he eventually said he was married but his wife had died. shortly after Lacey went missing, friends made her realize it was probably the same guy. Nicole on the other hand always knew Chris was married and had children and apparently didn’t care and/or believed he liked Nicole better and was going to leave his wife for her. While I don’t believe she was directly involved in what happened to those girls and Shanann, it’s not a good look to be such a willing participant in an affair. 2. You guys should look up “Nathan for You - The Ghost Realtor.” HILARIOUS!
@GC-pq6vm2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Amber Frye and Scott Peterson’s affair was before a time of social media as well. If Chris told Nicole he was getting a divorce, all she had to do was look at social media. I’m sorry but these days it’s just human nature to look up your mate or their potential ex on social media (which phone records revealed she did look at Shanann’s FB page). The pregnancy reveal and all the “happy posts” would make me question if they were really separated. Who knows what he was telling Nicole, though. She also googled “will a married man leave his wife for mistress.” I don’t think she had anything to do with the crimes but I can understand how the public looks down on her.
@boriqua51092 жыл бұрын
@@GC-pq6vm she also lied to the detectives on multiple occasions; deleted evidence by destroying a sim, deleting texts, and having CW delete texts; and goggled information about cops recovering texts. And she was on the phone with CW while he talked to detectives about the case on his work phone at 2am the day after the murders.

This case has me wondering about men that walk away from their family. It really had not occurred to me that some of these men may have walked away because they were about to murder their family. Generally men that abandon their family are seen as selfish and that is usually true, but considering this case and a few others....How many men have, while heading to the butcher block for a knife to destroy their family, instead have a moment of clarity and grab the keys to his truck and disappears into the world never to be heard from again?

He was so afraid of people knowing he did wrong that he needed to shut that possibility down. He killed them simply because he’s a coward. And in the end the very thing he wanted to avoid (people thinking bad of him) drove him to do the most unthinkable thing and now everyone knows that he is worse than a man who just walks away.

Regarding your query: What's the difference between Amber Frey and Nicole Kessinger: I think the differences could be. . . 1.) A. Frey had a child and was looking for a husband/father, which seemed like a more wholesome and honorable intention, whereas N. Kessinger was looking for an adventure and/or husband; 2.) A. Frey did not send Peterson "erotic" photos of herself and became known (post mortem) that Peterson "seduced" her, whereas N. Kessinger did and whereby gave the impression that she seduced C. Watts ; 3.) A. Frey "believed" (because S. Peterson told her) that S. Peterson was "single", giving the impression that she was "innocent", whereas N. Kessinger "knew" that Watts was still married, albeit unhappily married/was getting divorced; 4.) A. Frey did not have access to information available via internet, e.g. Facebook, etc., whereas N. Kessinger did in 2016, thus should have had more insight into his marital status (and perhaps state of mine). Hope I wasn't way off with my analysis. Love your content.

You guys presented so many good points. This is indeed a very puzzling case. How can a spouse go from apparently being controlled by his wife to murder his entire family and acting as if nothing happened the next day?🤔 Another important point in this case is the ultimate betrayal. I will never understand how parents can cause this much harm to their children. To me, if you cannot love and protect your own children then you cannot love anyone. To address differences in public opinion about Nikki and Amber: AF didn’t know SP was married whereas NK did know CW was. In 2002, social media didn’t exist other than message boards, though the internet did. There were no smartphones, and SW lived on hers. And as y’all pointed out, AF aided in the evidence collection at risk to herself. NK went to the police and cooperated. I think the public doesn’t believe NK didn’t know SW was pregnant since she worked with CW. NK claimed to not have social media which some people all found a bit hard to believe. If people don’t believe that, then they don’t believe she didn’t see SW’s very public profile and constant live streams, though NK may have seen a couple of videos and got bored by the constant Thrive promotion. I agree that NK wasn’t involved in the homicides. I think there were some inconsistencies in NK’s stories as well. I think she first said she hadn’t been to the Watts house but later we find out that she’d been there a couple of times.

Don’t forget the texts she deleted, and her showing Chris how to hide photos on his phone. At the very least, she definitely knew he was married.
@boriqua51092 жыл бұрын
She searched SW on google almost daily. The first thing that’s going to come up is her fb which was public. She most definitely that we’re together still and that SW was pregnant. Her phone also pinged in Frederick at 6:16am the morning of the murders (the only other times her phone pinged there was when her and CW both confirmed that she had went over there). On top of all that she lied to the detective multiple times, deleted all her messages and googled thinngs like “can police recover deleted texts” and she destroyed one of her SIM cards. That behavior is highly suspect and is exactly why ppl accuse of her of having some involvement. She’s nothing at all like AF who just an innocent victim.

The thing that blew my mind was when CW was watching the footage from his neighbor's security camera and when the guy turned the recording off, the screen flashed to a dark image of an unborn baby with an umbilical cord laying in some type of fluid. Chris had his hands on his head and immediately looked away when that image came on the TV. That had to totally mess with his head knowing what he had just done! The odds of that particular image showing at that exact moment is astronomical. It really makes me wonder if there was some paranormal or higher power at work there. It was definitely a "God moment"!

The one reason the Watts case became so huge is her almost continual use of social media. We have dozens and dozens of videos of Shannan, her kids and Chris. You feel like you actually know her. Also, the day to day goings on with them as a married couple with young kids and a huge house made people able to relate to them as well. It was also Chris's complete "normalcy" that really catapults this into the exceptional realm. You would just have never seen this coming. There wasn't a drop of hostility coming from him on the surface, although an astute observer could detect his rebellion in very subtle facial expressions as Shannan talked on. But for the most part, they just seemed like a very normal, successful couple whose lives were being broadcast almost constantly...which I think contributed to him finally blowing.
@ZombieMiezz2 жыл бұрын
Nah the police department was also quick to release all bodycam & interrogation footage - that's why it became so huge. Normally these things happen and you wait years before any footage is released if they release it at all. Also Shannan's best friend who was aware of Chris odd behavior did anything she could to get the media attention on him & the case. She put him under pressure before the detectives even interrogated him. Scheduled TV interviews for him that he didn't wanted to do. The media was big on this one because she was a missing pregnant women. And after Chris interrogation it was huge on news because it was so cruel.

Well she was very narcissistic and he was the classic submissive (one person in the relationship has to be if the other is a narcissist). That doesn’t mean they like being a doormat, they just don’t have the tools to assert themselves. Eventually these types will snap if pressure builds enough. I’m not saying she deserved to die, but I can see their relationship dynamic clear as day in their vids and it’s super unsettling. She was fake as hell to sell her image as a MLM higher-up and it was his job to maintain that image by being the perfect hubby on camera.

I think what makes the Chris Watts case particularly fascinating is the amount of post-crime video coverage of the case from basically beginning to end. Within only 10 hours of these terrible crimes being committed you see bodycam footage of Chris's first engagement with Law Enforcement, the neighbour's CCTV and Watt's reaction, through to his awkward conversations with the detectives, the crime scene, the car-crash media interviews, the interrogations, polygraph, confession, and arrest. All released with a matter of weeks. This amount of publicly available footage is unprecedented and provides an insight into human behaviour, choice of language, body language, investigative techniques, that can be pored over and analysed by professionals as almost a textbook example of how a killer unwittingly gives himself away by his choice of words and his subconscious behaviour. It's almost as if you were a detective in the case. This whole case and its coverage opened a window to the public, into the dark side of the human mind, and with Chris Watts being such an open book as you watch him exhibit every red flag of guilt known to investigators, you get to see a man slowly hammer the nails into his own coffin. Disturbing yet interesting in equal measure.

As far as the truck being too long to fit in the garage all the way, Chris said that in his police interview.

I haven't listened yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm drawn to this case because it feels close to home; Chris Watts could be my husband. We know that men kill their female partners, but we often reassure ourselves that we'd know if we were at risk. We think, "That wouldn't be me; I'd leave at the first sign of trouble". Despite statistics showing that 45 of the 91 women whose current or former partners killed them in the UK in 2018 were the victims of a perpetrator with no record of violence against women, we tell ourselves that statistics don't tell the whole story: we'd 'know' if our partner was 'bad'. It was probably evident to these victims, we think. The guys must have shown their underlying evil natures; the victims were naive to think it wouldn't end badly. We're stronger than that, we tell ourselves: we'd leave. Even if we didn't leave, it wouldn't surprise us: we can feel safe. This case had a terrorising effect on women by undermining these feelings of safety and security at home. KZbin videos of Chris and Shannan together allowed us to really feel and believe that there aren't always signs of trouble, in a way other cases hadn't done. Before the Chris Watts case, I thought I'd 'know' if my husband was a risk to my children or me. I watched the couple's interactions with each other and their children, desperately trying to find signs of bad character or dangerous intent, only to confirm that there were none. Some commentators maintain their false beliefs using spurious arguments based on criticisms of Shannan: "My husband would never kill me because I'm more submissive; less demanding; more thrifty". Others try desperately to implicate other 'evil' actors: "We can indeed tell if someone's 'bad'! Chris looked 'good' because he was good. If we had had the chance to observe the real baddie, we'd have been able to see their evil nature, right enough!". I understand why they delude themselves. The chances are, we're not going to be murdered by our partners, but it felt good to feel confident about this without resorting to a mantra about prevalence stats.

Also Nikki had Facebook, Shannon had a Facebook where she talked about her family everyday..there is no way she didn't know him and his wife were still together regardless of what he may have told her about it. I think Nikki is the 2nd most evil person in this story.

I was born and raised in Fall River Massachusetts, I don’t currently live in the city but I live outside the city in Attleboro now, but if you guys come up we’d be happy to have you up here and tell you all the tales of the city! We have other famous cases in the area, actually a few. Carl Drew (see book “Mortal Remains: A True Story of Ritual Murder” (Fall River), the first ever televised trial of “The Big Dan” case with Cheryl Arujo (New Bedford), as well as Aaron Hernandez (Foxboro / Attleboro / Fall River). Many famous (infamous?) cases ‘round these parts - all in Bristol County / Fall River MA court house - not just Lizzie Borden. Each can be found online with documentaries, books, docu-series, etc. You could do a whole series on the area! ❤️

One big difference between Amber Fry and NK is that Amber Fry had no idea Scott had a wife. She was in a different state and they met while he was visiting interstate. He told Amber that he had been married but his wife died and the christmas coming up was going to be his first without his wife. She learnt the truth on the news when she saw his story and immediately contacted police and co-operated. That probably plays a big part in why people see Amber Fry as more of a victim... because Scott just outright lied to her and she didn't know a wife existed. The fact that he told her his wife was dead and it would be his first Christmas without her when Lacey was still alive is part of what made him look so dodgy. It sure was his first Christmas without his wife, but at that stage he had no way of knowing that unless he had plans.

KEY points to add to this brilliant discussion & convo: -Reason he did not park the truck in the garage was because SW would not allow it because it would wake up the kids in the morning when he left. As stated by her friends. CW was not allowed to park the truck in the garage nor would it have fit in there w/ all their multilevel marketing crap accumulated in both parts of the garage. The kids bedroom were directly above the garage so since he had to make it look like they were still there and everything was normal that morning he had to park it on the street. 1. He premeditated the children unfortunately in his own words in a 2nd confession & in Cadle’s letters he thinks to himself the Saturday night before putting children to bed “he was relieved as it would be the last time he would put them to bed” no remorse no empathy. 2. Additionally the children to him are seen as liability w/ both having medical issues and problems arising from extreme hospital bills, as shown in financial documents. Some profilers say that in the mind of the perp he is saving them from torment by the act of murder etc. 3. I was hoping that you 3 would discuss the psychological aspects of the photo that that was texted shortly before SW return from NC w/ the baby doll and the orange sheet over it looking like a dead body covered by a sheet that CW texted to Shannon. That she then put on to FB and commented she has no idea how to take this. Was this a Freudian type slip that CW was amping up and getting excited for the plan? 4. The CC charge at the lazy dog w/ NK was intentional in his own words he knew at that point what he was planning to do, because he had arranged w/ a co-worker to take over his job on Friday at a location far remote on Monday, so CW says he just used the card knowing he wouldn’t have real consequences after that Monday. Previously he had used Anadarko gift cards on NK dates which were pre paid cards not traceable. Again a question is how was he rewarded these since NK was in safety compliance and that’s how you could possible earn these cards from the job. 5. Was hoping you would discuss his actions minutes and hours after the crime as a psychological profile: A) He texted a RealEstate agent about selling the house and actually drove to the location on his way home (verified by his truck data) to an address the RealEstate agent said was a similar home on the market pricewise. It is here he disposed of articles in his car and also where dogs were brought and alerted to but the handler thought it was the field across from the house and not the trash container that the dogs were alerting to. Also un-enrolling his kids from Primrose school that day, prematurely anticipating the kids would not return. - the convo he had w/ NK about pawning the wedding ring, he seemed willing to do it right away… 7. Vivint security cameras inside the house and in the garage. Those have never been fully released. In the Discovery there are records of the length CW went to to hide his actions including disabling the garage sensor ( he had a phone call w/ a Vivint rep) every time he moved the car from inside it should have alerted SW, instead he parked the car most of the time outside of the house while she was gone to NC. So it looked like the car never moved out if the house meanwhile he was driving it and staying w/ NK. Theres so much more to the deceit ! Also it is plausible that CBI received the actual footage from the house that day but never released it because there wasn’t a trial. In many police camera shots you can clearly see a Vivint camera in the garage. Outside of the door were you enter from the house. 8. The secret calculator app: that’s why he took so much media and consumed so much NK media directly on his personal phone (found in discovery) in a secret app that allowed photos etc to be hidden, even if SW looked at his phone. 6. The statement from NK about Chris FaceTiming w/ her that night after the murders and just starting at her to the point where she felt uncomfortable, possible a psycho stare ? Thanks for dissecting ! After examining the publicly available info in the case including the release from law enforcement/ text records etc 100% he alone planned haphazardly for the end result. Although I do think there are unanswered questions about exactly how it went down from the time SW walked in the door.

Imagine this case without the social media presence of Shanann. This case wouldn’t have received the popularity it did.
@kateashby306611 ай бұрын
I disagree. It’s almost the same case as Scott Peterson- who killed his pregnant wife and it was all over media every day, and took place long before social media took off. Granted, this case was recorded on home cameras and body cameras as well as social media form the start- but it still would have garnered nation wide attention considering a pregnant wife and two cute girls were missing.
@katheryn827211 ай бұрын
@@kateashby3066 Not at all the same. Chris Watts killed his family and they were found and he confessed within 5 days. No trial. Laci was missing for approximately 4 months and Scott wasn’t arrested for 4 months. He claims his innocence to this day. Shanann was very public with her life and had a lot of social media presence. Her FB videos were posted everywhere, with all kinds of analysis about their relationship and personal lives for months.

I agree with your summations: the girlfriend is not guilty. People want her to be because she is the other woman, and we all have some ingrained misogyny, plus we want to believe we can trust our spouse. Chris is not a psychopath, he is just a normal guy who did something really really horrible to his family and was luckily interrupted before he could hide a lot of the evidence.

Right.....I agree with you; Also all these arm chair detectives that are so convinced otherwise is ridiculous imo; I believe if LE thought she was involved in the actual murders they would have found out by now; I think these people are just here to make money and feel popular, because they always seem to mention having certain credentials related to LE or brag about many important or well paying jobs they have, although I can't see that, since they spend an awful lot of time on this case; I do believe that NK definitely tried hard to play down their affair and disassociate herself from CW, but other than that I feel she was just naive and made some poor decisions, although CW did lie to everybody!

I feel like if shananns friend Nicole hadn't foiled his plan by coming to check on shanann (because she'd been sick on that MLM conferance trip and she hadn't been on social media "working her business" all morning then didn't go to the doctor) then Chris could be finished staging everything by getting rid of the car with the car seats, medications,, phone and whatever else shanann would have taken with her. And I absolutely disagree with when Dr grande said he doesn't think it was planned. He had in very recent days asked his neighbor questions about his camera. I don't think it's a coincidence. I think if her friend hadn't gotten involved then this could be another Michelle Parker case. But I do think he planned in advance to kill shanann, then if Bella walked in he pre-planned minutes in advance to kill her and cici. First degree on all 3.
@xymotic Жыл бұрын
It was absolutely planned, @BellaGrandeMedia is wrong. Watts was giving her Oxy from an unnamed 'source' in while in SC and she was vomiting all day. Why would he take Oxy on a family trip in the midst of an intense sex affair all the while telling the mistress his wife was pregnant with another man's baby? Watts clearly states the mistress told him she was using a dating app to find other men. She was putting the pressure on him that she may find someone else and he could not let that happen
@kateashby306611 ай бұрын
I mean, he claled the school and did-enrolled the kids with no backup plan. I’m not saying he didn’t plan some of it but he certainly didn’t think even 2 steps ahead. He must have been super delusional when he chose to go through with it. I think he was considering it and then something happened between him and Shanann that made him snap. I’m guessing he told her they were done and she probably threatened to take the kids and he lost his shit. Pure speculation but nothing else makes sense. They even had sex that night!

Great to have this podcast back! In regards to the bodies in the oil barrels, I would imagine it acts as a preservative due to absence of air. So probably one of the worse places to hide a body since it would prevent or at least prolong the time for decay. Really not a master criminal in any sense In terms of items, how about that little kids sofa that Chris described that the girls would sit on and play on.

So not to troll or anything but since you were talking about whether or not crude oil is caustic. Chris in one of the interrogations is explaining to Tammy why he carried a change of clothes, he says “ if you get that stuff on your skin” and then he fades off… I always thought that was his intention with those girls. The oil would dissolve the bodies. Maybe he even thought he would have time to as grisly as this sounds he would dispose of Shan’an in the batteries as well. He was counting on having more time before she was noticed missing.

I think that the reason this case is so popular is because Shannan’s media presence. People feel like they knew the family, and Chris looked like a perfect, loving family man who adored his children. Also, there was no trial and no evidence. The case doesn’t feel like it’s been closed and people feel that many questions haven’t been answered.

The house in Villisca, Iowa, where 6 people were murdered in 1912 still stands. It is now known as the “Villisca Axe Murder House, is a museum, and lots of so-called “ghost-hunters” visit there. You can even stay overnight.

It lives in because the police did an inadequate job interrogating the mistress. While the crime and criminal would live in infamy it is uncertainty of the mistress's involvement which spurs people on. Didn't know you were on this channel,Dr. Grande.

Well, I’ve gone back and forth for a while and I think I have to abstain from voting on the figurine. I just can’t decide which one best represents the case, they both do such a good job at capturing the feel of the crime. The clock stands for the quick timeline of the case and the fact that Chris was apparently a ticking time bomb that no one knew about. The Facebook “F” makes me think of the differences in personality between perp and victim, the fact that she seemed more social than him as well as the spotlight that’s been shown on this case because of social media. I just can’t decide. On another note, I love hearing more of Bella and second the request for doggy screen time. However, I understand if she’s a private dog who doesn’t like being in front of the cameras. As always I really enjoyed this episode. Keep them coming!

I think this case is so popular because there was so much police body camera footage released from the start. Like hours and hours at the Watts house with the friend and then going through it with Chris and there were the famous neighbours and all that.
