The shackles his religion put on him, the expectations it might have provoked in him about how he should be living by 30 years old, could have been liberating to leave behind? Yes, it would mean leaving his family, but if he felt he was letting them down or was a burden then he might have felt it was a kindness to go? (not knowing it's a living torture not knowing what happened to your loved one) I don't know if suicide is against their teachings, if it is then moving on to pastures new could have meant he had everything to begin again. Once gone it's difficult to admit what happened and get in contact again with your old life, all the fuss that's made about you going missing, how can you just pop up again and say you're alright? Someone suggested he was vanishing to start a new life because he couldn't come out in a religious community, that's very plausible. For an LDS member yes, 30 very much is a critical milestone, especially for finding a spouse. When your two-digit age starts with a 2, everyone and their auntie is bending over backwards to introduce you to potential candidates. When you turn 30 that stops and you're more or less considered a lost cause, especially if you're male and without a steady job that pays enough to support a stay-at-home wife and a bunch of kids. Such a very sad story. Poor Stephen. I'm sure his family are devastated that he couldn't accept their help and that they still don't know what happened to him. . So sad that he had been offered a job in the next little while. A very sensitive and gentle analysis of a tragic story. It's so strange that his body hasn't been found. I'm inclined to think that whatever happened to him wasn't of his own doing. Just my idea.

I spit out my drink with the “get it up” joke. 😂 Dr. Grande is savage! On a more serious note, I’ve watched and read a lot about this case. I kinda figure suicide. His behaviors are so irrational and out of the ordinary. Many people who take their own life do not show symptoms of depression. Foul play is always possible too. I am reminded of the Craig’s list killer who lured people in by posting job openings and rental space.

I’m not sure this is as mysterious and sensational as other KZbinrs make it out to be. I think it should be a warning that someone can be intelligent, good looking and seemingly “upbeat and optimistic” while suffering from crippling depression from barely keeping their heads above water for a long period of time. I’m not suggesting the family did anything wrong, they tried to help him financially but I think this is a good case for mental health intervention and checking in on your loved ones when they’re really struggling. Such a sad case. I feel almost certain he took his own life. Great analysis.

If going to an interview, why park his car in a retirement community cul-de-sac, then walk at least 10 miles over 5 hours? This is consistent with a decision to end his life. He picked that spot to park and then walk aimlessly, thinking deeply about his life. At some point, he found a spot where he (successfully) figured he wouldn't be found, and that was it. There's not a shred of evidence that points to murder, drugs, or anyone else's involvement whatsoever. The good doc is almost certainly correct on this one.

Mormonism is a very strict organization but also grandiose and pseudo humble. In my opinion Steven was raised to believe the standards of mormonism are to always be maintained at the highest levels so being a poor nobody is not good enough to continue being, so he offed himself and to keep his family from seeing him like that he hid before. He was embarrassed and too proud and arrogant to receive any help and have his body located and properly buried in the mormon tradition.

Just a side note on Steven's vehicle... Supposedly, his Chevrolet Cavalier was a special model which used natural gas (or possibly propane) instead of gasoline. Such cars are still quite readily available in many portions of the U.S., but even moreso in the western part of the country. These vehicles get higher mileage to the gallon than gasoline, and in the long run, tend to be more economical. This means that Steven would have had to pre-plan where he would need to stop in order to get this special fuel he'd need for his car. So, he most likely would have had to take this into consideration in any of the trips he would take. My point on this is, since many of these compressed gas refueling stations are near to (or even attached to) truck stops, have any people at these refueling stations ever been interviewed, or has any surveillance CCTV footage been discovered at any of these places, to discover any pertinent information about Steven's disappearance?
