I never new there was any controversy about Scott Peterson's guilt. I was as interested at the time as anybody else and the evidence seemed to fall into place. I did realize that the press was going more wild than usual & that was different, I wondered how they thought to focus on this murder when spouses murdering each other happens probably more than we know, but the evidence certainly seemed to point to him. I guess I missed something..

Laci and Connor were found in the bay he went “fishing” in. He sold her car. Tried putting the house up for sale in the first week she was missing fully furnished and put a bunch of stuff in Connors nursery. Bought his boat a day or two after telling Amber he lost his wife. He went golfing. He went fishing. Couldn’t keep his stories straight. He’s so guilty!!

Definitely love this show so far, but if I may I would like to give some constructive criticism as this podcast grows. I know some have already mentioned the setup, so I won’t mention that. What I will say is, though I love the dynamic of you three, it often feels like Mike is dominating the conversation. Jeff is obviously the quietest of the three, so it’s a bit of a treat when he starts to speak up. So it is a little disappointing when Mike cuts him off. Again, I am big fan of this podcast and of Dr. Grande, and I don’t wish to offend. This "missing/murdered pregnant women" story is garbage. No connection whatsoever to what happened to Laci. The Peterson family focuses on one of these in their one-sided mockumentary, the case of Alice Sin. What they don't tell you is that her bf Raymond Wong was convicted of her murder in 2015...2 yrs before the documentary even aired.

The book Gone Girl was NOT published in 2002 it was 2012! Please don’t put your name to this podcast Dr Grande unless it is very well researched. Scott Peterson’s upbringing was not good . His Mother displayed many hallmarks of psychopathy. His own sister wrote a book about him called Blood Brother. I think the suspicion with Scott ordering the adult channels shortly after Lacy's disapperance comes from the notion that you wouldn't do stuff like that unless you are pretty sure your spouse doesn't return. If he would be hopeful that she's alive and returned he wouldn't want to have an argument with her why he ordered porn while she's missing. He knew she was gone forever.

I’m sorry to criticize, but I found the exercise in critical thinking done by Mike to be disrespectful to Laci and those who supported her. I think you need to do much more background research before you argue on the side of innocence of someone convicted of murder. I totally understand the intellectual merits of critically looking at the case- but you are talking about a murdered person and her baby. I’ve seen you all argue for the guilt of those who are still legally innocent as they await trial (as they most likely are), BUT I think you need to be much more careful once the case has gone though the full legal process.

YES. I was very annoyed listening to him speak because I'm like ... this woman is dead, why are you going so hard to say this man is innocent, trying to explain things that seem suspicious instead of saying its suspicious as hell! @@CR-ce5lf I like Dr. Grande, and I’m sure his co- host are great therapist- but the panel with seems lacking in expertises in criminal behavior or who has worked in the justice system. I’ve given the podcast a good chance, listening to many of the episodes, but they don’t have much insight, psychological or otherwise, and are just some people with a passing interest that know Dr. Grande and have happened to come across a ready-made audience. I normally wouldn’t be so harsh, but because they already have the potential viewership of Dr.Grande’s channel, I would have hoped they would be more knowledgeable about the subjects and provide legitimate expertise. So far, it’s just three people who happen to be therapists taking about true crime.

Great show guys! I’ve been doing my own deep dive lately and I just wanted to point out something that I think changed something for me. Amber’s good friend- a woman named Shawn - had met Scott for the first time in November 2002 at a conference. Scott lamented that he was looking for a pretty, smart girl - that he was sick of dating bimbos. This woman Shawn mentioned she knew a pretty, smart girl who deserved a good guy…her friend was a woman named Amber Frey. A few weeks after introducing Scott to Amber, Shawn was at a work meeting and discovered that Scott was known by some men in the meeting to be a married man. Furious, Shawn immediately left the meeting to call Scott on her cell phone to confront him. That confrontation with Shawn is what prompts Scott to feel the threat that Amber was going to find out he was married. Scott then begged Shawn to wait until he had the chance to tell Amber in person about his marriage. In mid-December, Scott meets Amber in person and states that, “I was married but lost my wife.” Then, he started crying, which made Amber back off as she assumed he meant she was dead. I have a feeling that if Scott wasn’t confronted by Shawn, he never would have made the statement of having lost his wife. He was backed against a wall by Shawn, so he had to say something…and he knew he couldn’t say he was never married or he was divorced - because neither of those is actually true. So he chose the word lost. This theory is further backed up later in the audio tapes between Amber and Scott - before Scott knows Amber is working with police. Amber confronts Scott about whether he was psychic since he knew his wife would go missing and he had lost his wife. Scott immediately replies, “There are different kinds of loss, Amber.” I’ve dated quite a few liars who carefully choose their language, and I’ve had the same sort of replies when I discover they are lying. It’s a matter of carefully choosing words. So it’s very possible that the statement he made just weeks before Laci disappeared was really was a HUGE coincidence

I’m also surprised that they were so willing to put stock in the reports of people seeing a pregnant woman walking a dog. Apparently there were a few pregnant women in the area. Also owning a medium/large yellowish dog isn’t uncommon either. Eyewitnesses testimony - especially when solicited (as it would have had to have been in this case) is notoriously unreliable (regardless of whether it supports the victim or the perpetrator). Whether 4 or 40 people saw ONE pregnant woman with a yellow dog doesn’t mean they saw Laci. All it means is that they saw a pregnant woman with a yellow dog.

I'm so glad I found this podcast! Just the right amount of humour mixed-in with the subject matter and I really like the laid-back vibe & mutual respect between the three of you. This is such a contentious case and I'd like to throw in my two cents on whether the detectives' initial 'haunch' about Peterson was wrong because it was due to his 'lack of emotion' - there were plenty of things besides him not acting right, in my opinion. For a start, who wants to casually saunter-off fishing on Christmas Eve instead of spending it with their pregnant wife and family? On a boat no one knew he owned, doing a 'hobby' he didn't have? I've tried to look at it from a 'tenth man' stance, but he was so duplicitous in all other aspects of his life it would only make sense if he did it. I trust your judgement as professionals and I certainly enjoy listening to your informed opinions, however in this case I also trust the intuition (and evidence) of the detectives... maybe if Peterson hadn't been so busy committing to his lies, his gut might have told him there was something 'off' about the detective work! Thank you so much for the fantastic job you do and keep these podcasts coming!

I appreciate that this is a different conversation entirely than we are used to on this topic. But the co-hosts are a bit uneducated on this case. The baby's body was less damaged because her body protected his until the gases of decomposition expelled his body from her. The tape was just garbage that became tangled on his body. Mike pretty clearly came in with the objective of poking holes in the case against Peterson in order to show reasonable doubt, which is a good way to approach any case when looking at the issue of legal guilt. My issue is that in order to maintain that position he was willing to overlook or dismiss the implications of a lot of things that certainly seemed out of the ordinary to me. The issue of the viagra for example, you don't need to explain that away at all as it doesn't imply guilt in my opinion, but he started talking about mountain climbing. Kind of overreaching in my opinion. I think it would have been interesting to hear more about the opinion around factual guilt in addition to legal guilt, as I was pretty surprised at the end to find out Mike thought Peterson is probably guilty.

So grateful to Dr. Grande for introducing me to the concept of innocent in reality vs. not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I now agree that there are a lot of high profile cases with people who probably are guilty in reality but should not be in prison because there is plenty of reasonable doubt. That’s how the justice system should work, to protect the innocent, I.e. it’s better to let 1,000 guilty people roam free than to falsely imprison one innocent person.
@Preservestlandry
@Preservestlandry 3 жыл бұрын
But it's really not. 1 innocent person in jail only hurts that person. 10,000 guilty people will kill, rape, etc, how many innocent people?? You can't let 10,000 guilty people go free. We'll all be killed.

But you discussed a lot of evidence which I’d never heard and other evidence was explained in a less biased fashion. I’d never thought you’d put your clothes in the washing immediately but if it smells of fish then it’s completely reasonable. Also mentioning the tape and string on poor baby Connor as well as Lacie’s missing organs definitely only raises more questions than answers. Very good take

When coincidents lined up and connect dots -- it's pointing to the killer. Based on statistics and protocols they have to rule out Scott and they couldn't help to notice the signs of a killer. The detective initial suspicion of Scott as the killer, it's only because of his training and experience alerted him to do so. When you're in the field for that many years, you can't help it, even in your normal daily life and you come across someone during a hand shake or small talk -- you will notice something out of place or oddity that will alert you. You can't turn it off. You can spot a liar sooner than normal people -- that's why you don't have too many friends. You spot foot prints for a crime and motives easier than flipping a coin. Putting aside the jurisdiction/location and time disparity between these two cases, it sounds like the jurors of the Scott Peterson and Casey Anthony trials should have swapped places! As a Brit, most of my knowledge of the Peterson case was limited to the massively negative portrayal of Scott in the media. But this video has definitely made me consider he was not guilty beyond reasonable doubt, whether he was truly guilty or innocent.
@coyoter9691

It seems like his affect was a big point on convicting him, but I'm not convinced that it doesn't serve as a piece of evidence. I very much understand that people have different emotional reactions. Myself, I suffer from a dissociative disorder, and am often emotionless when struck with a situation that demands emotion, I often feel empty and far away in that moment. So I don't necessarily think his stoic face should have any relevance. BUT - there are other moments where I think his lack of genuine concern is evident and thus, should be considered by a jury. I feel that an innocent man, even if having an affair, wouldn't feel comfortable talking on the phone to his mistress during a candlelit vigil. I feel if he felt genuine concern and worry inside, then he wouldn't be worrying about keeping up with a mistress whom he barely knows, he'd be a bit more present with what's going on. She had only been missing a few days, and he's worried about keeping up the Paris lie? Even if he fell out of love with his wife, surely he felt some connection to his missing child? I do find it odd that he watched explicit material on the night she went missing. I certainly am not going to pretend that I understand male sex drives, since I'm not one. But if someone I cared deeply for went missing, I'd be way too distracted to even watch TV at all. I think my focus would be completely shattered. I would be consumed with thinking over the day, where did they go, what happened, am I going to be framed. I may put on the TV, but my mind wouldn't be able to focus on something so trivial. Not a solid piece of evidence of anything, but as a juror, I wouldn't help but wonder how he could possibly focus on that. Maybe other men would disagree and say that it would be normal? There was also a witness who said when they gave him missing posters to put up, when they walked away, they saw him throw them in the trash. I don't know how reliable that witness is - but if that is true, that would be a major red flag that there is zero concern. And that is indeed relevant when considering someone's innocence in my opinion. I don't think the jury was only taking into account his stoic appearance, but also his actions and behavior that illustrate a complete lack of emotion or care towards Stacy and Connor. I don't agree that it should be ruled out as possible evidence. Not strong evidence, but nevertheless, considered. Edit: Just want to add that I really appreciated the long discussion - this case definitely gets us thinking on what evidence should be considered in a case, and what is good enough to convict guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. This is a tough one and definitely raises those questions all over it.

Cops not looking for exculpatory evidence should be a defense in itself. It's their job to collect ALL the evidence so that the defense can present it to the jury. A defendant doesn't have the resources or the legal authority to find and subpoena evidence. And the police take control of crime scenes and physical evidence and wouldn't let the defendant search it even if they feasibly could. Justice is not served by omitting evidence that could point to the actual criminals. Wrongful convictions are bad enough, plus they endanger the public if the true criminal is left free.

1:07:30 didn't the dog get out twice supposedly? So if Scott put her in back and didn't realize the gate was open, wouldn't the neighbor notice the gate unlattched when they put the dog back? Wouldnt they fix it? Idk what this means but why would a dog get out twice in a short period of time? There had to have been a hidden exit, if we believe the dog got out twice. My theory, lacy was attacked while walking the dog and left the gate unmatched when she left. Dog freaks out after attack and is found on street. It's put in the yard, were the dog already knows of a way out but doesn't normally use it because the Peterson take care of her well, except this time the dog thinks lacy needs help so she sneaks out again though the hidden escape. My Malinois can easily jump our fence(not saying a golden could) and has while fence fighting a stray dog, but she's only ever done it that one time.
