Trixie adored him and I tear up every time I see her watching him sing and play. One of the greats of our generation and sadly missed. So glad “Living with the Law” cassette cover captured my attention back when it came out. Mesmerized ever since

If Chris had ever had a clear picture of what his life and his songs were about, he would have been a less effective spokesman for the disenfranchised and the wild natured singer he was. As much beat poet as anything, we have so much of his spirit scrawled across his discography that there's no doubt he was one in a million. RIP my man.

Had the good fortune to see Chris Whitley perform in Dublin, Ireland in October of 1998...was the beginning of a months long, lost journey through many parts of western Europe...hailing from Santa Fe, New Mexico and starting my Euro odyssey in Reykjavik, Iceland. I did not necessarily expect or intend to live through that trip....but when I hear a Chris Whitley song - something I intentionally make happen often - I recall that trip and the awful state of mind and heart I had grown, and how the melancholic, blues-laden, profoundly under-appreciated trademark sound of his National Resonator Guitar - slide piece always in hand - and his beautiful, vulnerable, and authentic voice.....lifted my Spirit right out of my chair in that Irish auditorium...the chills running up and down my emaciated body's tortured spine throughout that night. The memory of seeing one of my all-time favorite singer/songwriter -blues/rock musician, easily the most unexpected pleasure I encountered in all of Europe, certainly helped save my life, kept me interested in playing guitar and writing songs, and will forever be remembered. I still listen to your music - Chris - frequently, and hold-you-up on one of the Biggest Pedestals this little heart and mind has ever erected...Thank You Chris Whitley! Que Dios te bendiga Compadre!

It's his birthday today. Strangely I still miss this man... I think I saw him perform a dozen times. He deserved so much more and I hate how it finished. But I agree with nov20five... turn people on to this man and his music. Living with the Law, Dirt Floor, Terra Incognita, Perfect Day.... so powerful

That Buckley and this man were contemporaries , and both passed so early is not only a COLOSSAL loss for us all, but also a COLOSSAL CO-INCIDENCE: like two Albino Buffalo from completely different paths... I wonder how much they knew of each others work, but wouldn't be surprised if their single-minded purposes left no room for them to even dwell on such things...

thanks for posting 3 videos from Dirt Floor. I've spent years waiting for them. yes it's Trixie looking at her father making art/music on a dangerous place. the right screenplay to describe a situation that leads to death. I was waiting for buying the "Scrapyard" videotape but never found it. I've seen on Chris website (the one when he was still alive) some still pictures from another cheap video made during the Dirt floor era : he was playing banjo, had the same hairstyle. Ballpeen hammer ???

I see this as a song about death. He has too much work going on in his mind, a restless tumult. Everything has become banal, predictable. He has a loved one still anchoring him in this world. He wants to let it all go, run back to the spiritual wilderness. And I suppose he did about 7 years after this song.
@dougo26163 жыл бұрын
Death... well, yes. But to me it's a yearning to break free of the bonds of pain in our unceasingly duelistic world: where spiritual leaders are predators and those professing to help 'the people' only want to fleece them of what little they have. He is wistfully ready to go, with the industry polished Big Sky Country hit even regaling what it would be like to "meet you in the BSC" and the unstated longing to be "meeting my maker in the BSC". With Trixie looking up at him from lower in the mine, his prolific output is almost Mozartian considering he also had to battle so many other things. Hotel Vast Horizon indeed.
