I played Street Fighter with stick since SF4 days and swapped to leverless about six weeks ago. It took a bit, but I now feel my leverless play surpasses my stick play. The biggest tip I would give someone making the switch is to practice a small amount every day. For me, it was an hour split across training mode (to relearn my BnBs) and arcade mode (to train against an erratic opponent). If you find something hard to do, practice it a little then move on and try it again the next day. I dunno if it's brain pathways building over night or what, but I usually came back the next day able to do the input with much less difficulty. If you get bored with the hour a day of practice, use the time to try playing as other characters. There's no reason you can't do both, and the variation in movement types will train you on leverless that much faster.

I found myself naturally following the strategy Sajam reccomends on his videos about learning games: not to worry about losing. I played the tutorials and a bit of practice, then I dived directly into ranked. I lose all the time, but its extremely fun and I notice every learning step taking shape second to second. I'm not the fastest learner, but oh boy these two months I've gained so much experience.

Literally come back to it later… Sure there’s been studies where someone who learns a skill and can have 5 mins rest with silence, before doing some sort of test with said learned skill. Will perform better than someone who can practice for double the time and then do testing When I learned geese Howard in Tekken I used to have dreams about performing the links (you hadn’t to use a different strength of special to combo depending on the launch/distance) I drilled that in my dreams
@3nertia2 ай бұрын
My friends usually stopped playing fighting games with me because I would stay up all night while they were sleeping and practice every move of every character until I had all the timings down and could do counter even the most aggressive combos and then after some sleep when I finally woke up and everyone was ready to play again, to them, it was like I magically got better literally overnight xD

It took me around 1 month to start getting comfortable playing with my hitbox controller. The most challenging motion was double quarter circle back. I sat everyday in the training room with my coffee and some music to practice this motion in particular. I agree you should learn every motion from both sides, and also from standing and from sitting + block position. The first week is very hard, and very frustrating. Keep at it, after that it will just keep on getting easier and funnier.

This is good advice for beginners. I’ve been a leverless user since 2018 and one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is just get used to moving. Walking, dashing, jumping etc. Get used to using your hands for that. Another hurdle people run into is a lot of times they don’t know how to use the jump button in the sense of which hand it should be designated to. This does boil to personal preference but the way I do it that may be useful is if it something specifically movement oriented (jumping for example) then my left thumb will hit it but if it’s for tech (say tiger knee inputs or certain Tekken moves) then my right thumb will usually hit the button. It took me a few weeks to be comfortable just doing things and about a year for real proficiency. There are a lot of benefits but understand like anything else it does have a learning curve

I'd add that when you do start adding shortcuts it can seem daunting because of so many options. The best way to filter the shortcuts is to pick ones that feel the most intuitive vs full retrains of a motion and it isn't uncommon to input one type of move multiple ways.
@Chris_F Жыл бұрын
Very true! Thanks for sharing your insight
@xdragon2k Жыл бұрын
The reason the learning curve is steep is because instead of one controller on your left hand with intuitive directions, you're split into four different buttons that your brain has to redevelop the muscle memory for before it becomes intuitive. Learning new stuff is slow. Recalling what you have already learned is second nature. If the controller is objectively better for execution, spending time to develop the muscle memory is going to be worth it.
@Chris_F Жыл бұрын
Totally agree, although some people are just better at adjusting quickly more than others.
@richr161 Жыл бұрын
Its not that bad. For pc users the inputs are the same that they're already use too. These is just no W key. Its not needed because the game is 2d. If you been playing on pc you've already been doing the same motions for a while. The most challenging part is getting the ring and finger dexterity.
@170AndBeyond Жыл бұрын
I agree with all of this. The one thing that I would add is if you are interested in making the switch, just do it. I played on pad for years, and I wish I would've switched to stick and leverless sooner. It takes time to get used to any new thing, but a common thing I saw was people making it seem like it would take you months or years to make the switch. It is true that people learn and adapt at different speeds, but if you already have the fundamentals it's so much more intuitive than it may seem. The only regret I have is not getting a leverless years ago. I think stick is fun to use to mess around with, but it's not for me. After about 6 weeks of playing on leverless I feel like I'm solid. Now, the only issue is that I need to stop slacking and play more. I saw someone else say this channel is underrated an I agree with that too.

After 20 plus years playing exclusively Tekken, I began playing 2d fighters and leverless with SF6, and so far the experience has been slow, but great. There are many things I still can't do consistently (mostly tight timing combos into supers and NOT doing the 2nd level Blanka super while trying to get electricity from crouch), but overall I feel changing to leverless has been the best choice I've ever taken for fighting games. My left ring finger betrays me from time to time, but overall the control of my character have been increasing noticeably, in direct oposition to my experience with stick, wich for me was the absolute worst, for years. Leverless also surpases pad most of the time, although pad is better for World Tour mode.

TBH, as someone started playing fighting games on a keyboard, the leverless controller is much easier to get into. Playing on Joysticks (arcade sticks or console controllers) will make many unintentional jumps around like an enraged kangaroo. I don' know how people can play on them on a professional level. Hitbox is much easier to use and more forgiving than a joystick.

I've been using leverless/box for a few years now, and when asked for advice from those picking it up, I unironically recommend playing a game like Tetris (specifically Tetris effect) instead of a fighting game right away. It forces you to think about your movement, pressing 'up' is an instadrop so you only jump when you want it, it slowly ramps up the difficulty as you play, etc. Then once your movement feels right do I recommend people try learning motions as well.

It helps with the frustrating parts of trying to improve without not progressing in the game. It'll be awhile before i decide to take the leverless into matches, but i found after using keyboard that it does feel a lot more fun to play like that. So I bought a cheap leverless to work with and practice with each day and keep playing with controller to keep me focused on building my char and gameplay at the same time.

I guess I'm technically on leverless now 'cause I just started learning how to play SF6 with a keyboard lol a lot of what you said also applies to my situation and I do find it very validating to know that the whole "doing back QCF's and playing on P2 side is literally impossible" situation isn't just something I'm experiencing. I've only been on keyboard a couple of days (mostly of necessity), but I really enjoy how snappy and responsive inputs feel. There's obviously a learning curve with getting used to where buttons are, but some things feel like second nature already and I can't wait to keep getting better.

A few things I think need to be added for newcomers. 1) Don't be afraid to shift your fingers around. Personally, no matter how hard I try, doing 2x QCF from player 2 side using my middle and ring fingers will never be as fast as if I slide my fingers over and use my index and middle fingers. Of course there are advantages and drawbacks to any finger shifting, so adjust accordingly for you and your game. 2) If you don't have a leverless controller yet, I highly consider one that has more buttons than the standard 4 directional + 8 face/attack ones. For example, some have an additional bottom button, to the left of the Up button. That can be assigned as a second Down button (or anything). But as a second down button, it would also help with my earlier example of the QCF from the player 2 side. The point is you'll have more configuration options.

MK1, Tekken 8 and Project L are even better on hitbox controller than SF6. Better than a pad imo.

Great point about the slide inputs! I live in Japan and MK isn’t sold here so I can’t really offer you any advice, sorry. I think most top players play on pad so I’m sure pad is more than good enough for MK1

I got a leverless controller and SF6 for Christmas and was dreading how hard it would be. Day 1 I couldn't stop banging my thumbs on the up button. Week 3 I hit Diamond with Blanka. However I still struggle with QCB P1 side or QCF P2 side because of exactly what you said regarding ring finger strength. Playing daily I saw small improvements constantly

I don't really use shortcuts, but the only one I really use is the new SOCD cleaning for D + U = N. I tried for the life of me to do QCF/B motions with just my ring and middle finger, but it was too uncomfortable to the point where I felt like I was hurting myself in the long run. Once Capcom put the new SOCD rule in place I saw on a couple videos on how to perform QCF/B motions with the right thumb for D + U = N and it has saved my left hand's life. I could never do 2X QCF/B fast enough from the player 2 side doing it the traditional way and I don't think I can ever go back to trying it. It's not worth getting RSI. This is also coming from a guy who plays both piano and guitar from a young age. I can do some quick runs with my left hand on those instruments, but those movements are more dynamic than a leverless controller. Otherwise, great tips. I learned a lot from this video. Also, what are the SOCD cleaning rules for other fighting games? I was curious about that if I ever want to play another fighting game than Street Fighter. I can't really find any other info easily online.
@Chris_F Жыл бұрын
Everyone has different things they struggle with, but I think leverless gives us a lot of options so after some trial and error everyone can do basic commands. Thanks for the comment and for watching! AFAIK only the Capcom pro tour (sf6 has leverless SOCD rules. I think anything goes in other fighting games

I've been playing with pad only, but I have plans on switching for leverless soon, and the ring finger is actually my biggest concern when It comes to playing with one, but I hope that my time playing Black Desert Online where I used my left ring finger to do a lot of inputs and movements pays off, a lot of people say that who used to play fighting games in a keyboard has a easier adaptation to leverless, it is not a fighting game, but BDO had me having to do hours and hours of play time exercising my hand left fingers, so maybe this might help.

@Chris_F Жыл бұрын
I use it on my lap. I played arcade stick for about 10 years so lap just feels the most natural to me, but I don’t think it matters as a beginner. Try both lap and desk and see which one is the most comfortable!
@Gonbebe Жыл бұрын
I've found I can only play leverless in newer games with lenient inputs, when I go play something like Ino in +R it's too difficult for me to hit every diagonal when I need to as opposed to stick (skill issue I know). In SF6 though the shortcuts you can utilize are straight up broken.
@Chris_F Жыл бұрын
I think leverless is better for games where small, precise movement is more important (SF, Tekken) than games where you need a lot of inputs quickly (old GG titles, KOF). Everyone is different but that has been my experience

Biggest tip I have is learn it with a brand new fighting game you’re not familiar with. If you have to learn how to play the game alongside learning the controller it will feel more natural and be easier to memorize. I did it this way and stuck with it until playing any fighting game felt unnatural if I wasn’t using leverless.

@Chris_F4 ай бұрын
Both are actually really good choices bc they have common inputs. The input system for GGST is vastly different than SF6 so shortcuts may/may not carry over depending which you use. I’d say learn it on the game you enjoy more! It’ll make the learning process more interesting

The levelers is the best fight game controller, with the tradeoff of the very high learning curve and especially the unintuitive nature of the left hand.
@mr.richard3715 Жыл бұрын
i got one a week ago switching from pad but man i gotta say the switch is quiet hard nothing feels really intuitive the layout is causing me issues forgetting where some buttons are located cause they re all the same, rolling motions, supers and half circles as well etc. i dunno sometimes i just wanna quit and say f.. it and sometimes i say to my self i have to overcome "THAT POINT where its clickin" charging or movement wise i gotta say it feels like butter or just hitting buttons soo responsive. obiviously transition from pad to leverless is by far the hardest how long did u take to get to 100%?
@Chris_F Жыл бұрын
I say treat this like learning an (easy) instrument. The first hurdle is quite tough but don’t give up because once you get over it things get MUCH easier. If you’re really struggling then I suggest writing down a simple training routine to do with your hands as you watch tv or something. Took me about 2-3 months to get used to it but I’m an idiot so I learned it with SFV training mode along with GGST and Tekken which gave me WAY more work than needed.

I think p2 side is easier on hit box. I don't agree with a lot of this coming from stick for years and recently making the swap. I think this should be geared towards newer players. My biggest tip is learning to block again playing casuals. Defaulting to down back and reacting to lows took more time then relearning moves and movement.
@Chris_F Жыл бұрын
We all struggle with different things, but from the people I’ve spoken to 2P side seems to be an issue for most. Also, this is geared towards new players, it’s in the title.

I've been trying a leverless controller for more than 7 months and I still suck. I only can gain about 75% of my stick skill. For me, stick is more forgiving in term of motion input & reactions, but the leverless is faster and more precise especially in blocking.
