If you skip the pins, you can solder the wires directly into the pin holes, far less effort and tidier. You can also get ESPs with the pins uninstalled, so this can be done on both ends.

hi my learned friend. I pulled another all nighter on this problem. 3rd night. I have absolutely No clue what I'm doing. I remember basic programming back in the long lost day... But after subscribing to what I call "bumble bee logic" I actually managed to compile a wled.bin wuhooo.. Now this may not be an achievement to the majority as I don't talk code fortran c++ or anything like that. I'm still on English 101. Anyways.. Truley if I can do it.. Many of those who think they can't.. really can.. (that makes sense right..?) Now flashed my resulting hard work lol onto 4 esp32s..with wled 14 with sound reaction. That's all I wanted and that what I got. And yes in the end it was relatively easy.

Super video, is there a possibility to do the same with a 3.5mm line in instead of a microphone? Would like to be able to use it even when the music is playing softly or when friends are there and you are talking without the LEDs reacting to the conversation. What do I have to do differently than in the video to implement this?

I have never seen someone solder to headers before. That looks sooooo hard lol, you can order ESP32 boards without the headers preinstalled. They are much cheaper because the headers must be soldered manually by a human. Then you can solder your wires through holes, instead of to metal posts. I can't believe you made that work that's crazy.

Some mics (like the one Chris used) have a trim pot (screw) to adjust the gain. Maybe that could've helped with running it at 3v in your case. But if it's running fine now at 5v then there's no need to mess with it :-)

@@joeygunzilla6878 Afraid I have not! I teach a WLED introductory class at my local makerspace, but omit the sound reactive part of it because I've never got it to do what I really want. I haven't tried versions of SR since this video was released, I think, so things may have improved. There's always the chance with electronic components that we were shafted with faulty ones, too. Thanks so much for watching! Yeah I hear ya. Thanks so much for watching! Are the led lights working if your just trying to control them normally without the sound react effects/animations? The only thing I remember is that I believe the mic's I ordered came in a 2 pack and only 1 of them worked for some reason. Not sure if that might be the issue but at least for troubleshooting I try to have 2 of everything on hand to hopefully narrow things down a bit for what might be the issue! Haven't tried it back as I was traveling for a while. Will get back to you once I have it working. PS: The same sensor didn't work in isolation when observed over a serial monitor with the same potentiometer setting. Not sure what the sorcery is :(

Great video. I’m in the process of making my existing WLED roofline in to a sound reactive roofline. Was hoping to make a Db threshold so that it only gets triggered by sounds that are above a certain loudness that way when the yahoos drive by with their loud sound systems or loud lack of mufflers they would see flashing red and blue lights behind them coming from my house.

Awesome video! I recently found your channel and it's been my main source of info and inspiration for my first custom led project. Question. Lets say I have 4 individually controlled strips. Would I need to have microphones on each controller? Or could I have a mic on one strip and then use the "Sync" feature to basically replicate the sound reactive effects to the non sound reactive strips?
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and great question! So if your going to have 4 controllers you would need to have a microphone on each one. The sync feature would basically be telling each controller what animation to initiate but without the mics, they would then have display any animation. However, in theory if you wanted them all to do the same things you could split the data line coming from 1 controller 4 ways and then all 4 of them would do the same thing as you would only have the 1 controller if that makes sense. Thanks again for watching!

@@ChrisMaherDIY That makes complete sense! I really appreciate the info. My project is going to consist of 1500 LEDs all in diffuser channels throughout a room (25m @ 60 LEDs/m). For ideal performance and frame rate on the esp32 its recommended to run 512 LEDs or less, per pin. Could I output the data on multiple pins on the esp32 using WLED that way I don't have 1500 LEDs on one pin? Or would I'd be looking at a slightly different controller?

So, I ordered a package of max4466 and installed 3 of them(1 at a time) on an ESP32 for sound reaction on WLED. I'm not getting any reaction from them. The only thing I'm doing differently is using the ground pin on the ESP32 because I am powering a strip of 60 pixels with a micro USB cable and a 5V 2A phone charger. I am able to run regular light cycles through the WLED app but not the ones with notes beside the names(sound reactive). When I select any sound reactive modes, the lights just turn off.. I know I'm connected, I have 3.3V at the ESP32 and the 4466. I have the proper version of WLED sound reactive installed on the ESP32. I have the audio data pin set to 35(even though it defaults to 34 in settings). I have turned up the gain on the 4466, but still nothing. I even soldered wire directly to the 4466 mic instead of the 3 pin post that came with it on the 3rd mic I tried. I have been unable to find much info online for my particular problem, but I can't be the only one. I suspect it is a grounding issue. The ground pin on the ESP32 should work, right? I was wondering why you didn't solder the 4466 ground directly to the ESP32 in this video?? For this project, I am not using a large power supply, and the only other ground I can tap is the ground connected to the light strip.. in this video, you just hooked it up and it worked. You didn't even adjust the gain on the 4466. Can you help?

Not sure if you tried it already but automating your projects would be pretty cool. I read you can use Homeassistent to connect with WLED and control your Light. So e.g. you could have some NFC Tag sticker around the house (really cheap) and the lights would turn on by just holding your phone on the sticker for a sec. Instead of having to unlock the phone and open the WLED App.

@Ravenseyes10

I'll go ahead and answer my own question in case anyone else runs into a similar problem. The max4466 is not a quality mic. It is susceptible to noise in the in the wires and the devices they are connected to. I was trying to build a light box that was sound reactive and powered by a USB power supply. I discovered this won't work. Here's why...After soldering my connections and connecting everything to the ESP32, I had no mic. But I could change the color in WLED sound reactive. I knew everything was installed and connected properly, but I had no mic. This was powered by a 5v 2a supply via USB. I have a box of USB plugs and none worked.. new or old.. then, after some more troubleshooting, I hooked everything up to the same power supply Chris uses in the video(tho mine is a 5v 30a) the 1st time I put the lightstrip on its own power and twisted the common wires to the mic and ESP32 together on their own power and still had no mic. Luckily, I had a 3rd post on this power supply, and when I gave the mic it's own common post, it worked.. the mic needs to be connected to its own common (ground) I'm thinking there is a better digital mic that would do a better job. Even with the gain set to high on the 4466 and the sensitivity all the way up on WLED, I either get too much reaction or not enough. Hope this helps someone. I think that should have been explained in the video, but it wasn't. Common sense(pardon the pun)would dictate ground on the ESP32 would be where you hook up ground from the mic. For once, common sense was a bad idea..

@brivic7273 I2S... and no, I don't have any videos. Sorry. There are plenty of videos showing how to set them up. The MAX4466 will work intermittently, but will stop suddenly for apparently no reason. The problem is in WLED(not a problem, really). The noise floor(static/hiss in the background)for that mic is very high and WLED is programed to ignore the noise floor to differentiate noise from a wanted source like a speaker and an unwanted one like the A/C running. So, if the noise floor in the environment is too loud, WLED ignores all noise and won't work. Making the MAX4466 as useless as a pecker on your forehead! You would probably sound like Thomas Edison on a wax spool if you tried to record audio with one of these turds! You have more connections to solder, but there will be no problems if you use an I2S mic...works brilliantly!assuming you know how to solder and set up the mic in WLED. Good Luck!

Awesome work! Love you’re video’s. But I am somewhat confused….I did some research and sometimes people are using a logic level shifter. You don’t seem to do that. The plan is to make two sound reactive floor lamps. One with controller and one without. The lamp without will get its data and power from the lamp with the controller. There will be somewhere around 250 led’s together, 125 per lamp. So the big question is, do I need a logic level shifter? And suddenly it hits me…the strips are directly powered by the powerblock and not thru the esp board. So that’s why there’s no need for a logic level shifter.
@ChrisMaherDIY

Thanks so much for watching and great question! So my understanding is the logic level shifter is there to boost the data signal so that it reaches the lights and does what its supposed to. For some of my projects Its worked perfect without it and for some (mostly when the data line from the esp device is somewhat long going to the first LED) I have needed to use something (I've only used a small resistor like I did in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGKWh3-fgJx0hbc or a method called the sacrificial pixel, but a logic level shifter I think does the same thing) So for pretty much everything I've done, I start out without using anything to boost the data signal but when testing things out if the led lights are going crazy, that generally means I have to do something! Hope that helps!

As mentioned before I want to build to two sound reactive floor lamps. I have two options. Option 1 is to build two sound reactive floor lamp and hope that they react, pretty much, simultaneously. Option 2 is build one sound reactive lamp en split the signal coming from lamp 1. The maximum distance between the two is maximum 5 meters so I hope that works out. And if not I will have to use a logic level shifter or use a sacrificial pixel. So my other problem is connecting the two. Lamp 1 is always in the room and lamp two is optional. Which means that when I want to use that lamp I will have to connect them using some sort of wire. The best option I can think of is take a normal three conductor power chord. Two chords will obviously conduct the power coming from the 5v 10a power block. One chord will serve as a data wire which goes from led strip 1 and runs to strip 2. And they will be connected with a xlr connector. But I am not sure if that’s technically possible. Any ideas in that? I could not think of any other type of connection between the two lamps with one cable that sends power and date to lamp 2.

@@3lwoood Thanks for the reply and the explanation! So I've never used an XLR connector but just looked them up and I'm intrigued! I could be way off because i'm not exactly sure how they would work but do you think you could just get a splitter like this: amzn.to/3F9RckR and then 1 would always be plugged into the lamp that you have in the room and the other you could just plug and unplug as you needed?

That’s also an option. I just ordered all the parts and when I’ve got everything i will start the build. By then I will look and decide how to connect them. If you want I can keep you updated about the final result. Thanks a lot for you’re reaction and time! Keep up the good work en keep inspiring people.

Is it possible to toggle between standard WLED features and sound reactive WLED features using a single ESP32 controller? I like both and may want one or the other at a give time. Or would this require two ESP32s, one with mic and one without?

Thanks so much for watching buddy! Great question! Sound React WLED pretty much has all the non sound react settings and effects loaded in it as well so its as simple as selecting any non reactive effect. So If you installed WLED sound react with a mic you will have any option you want. I did put together a more in depth video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaHPlqN-bqeHb9k

Hi ya, Great video but I have a question. I want to run a sudio line in input either jack or RCa rather than a mic as I will not have audio playing from speakers to pick up the sound. Any ideas? Sorry absolute noob just trying to learn.

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I have not tried doing it that way so I honestly have no idea if it would work or not or how to go about setting that up. Maybe someone reading through the comments might now for sure and can chime in!

Why did you only use one section on the pin board one you did? Looks good in the bedroom. Although getting down to the grove, not sure if it would be off putting or enhancing 🤣🤣.

Lol yeah probably not something I will use much in the bedroom. The bedroom setup is really just for some accent lighting at night instead of having a lamp! I tested it out first using all the sections of the peg board and since the way I had it wired up it treated all the sections as 1 large one so it was difficult to really see the effect since all the sections were lit up! I could have created 12 segments and then they would have all been doing the same thing which would have worked but didn't want to take the time to do that.
