Another EXCELLENT video Chris!! I bought similar channels at home depot about 2 years ago, they work great you just need to clean them well, I placed them facing up on my wall since I didn't want the led's to show {no diffuser} and it worked great. Now that you tried the paper as a diffuser I'm thinking about other areas in my place. Thank you Chris!

The Muzata diffusers are great, but they're only 1m, so this is really useful when you don't want seams. Even if you had a seam in the aluminum channel, there's no seam in the diffuser, where it's most noticeable. Bravo!

Also very ingenious to use addressable LEDs to build your custom lighting schemas, additionally, you're using an ESP32 to accomplish this affordably also giving you the option to wirelessly make changes to your light configs or sync the lights up to the smart home. I know a lot of paper you can buy now says like non yellowing so at least there is that but yeah, if you have this in a place where kids or pets could bump into it, I'd probably go with just a normal diffuser. So far they have been holding up perfectly but then again, its only been a couple weeks lol.

Another amazing project, quick question, how is watching TV with a diffuser "out in the open" , to the naked eye... usually I put LEDs out of view and I'm trying to imagine having a constant view of them.... hard to tell from videos? I usually just use warm whites to prevent eyestrain and nice effect do I'm not into coloring the room neon blues etc.... keep up the great work

Thanks so much buddy! Great question. I do mostly listen to music down here but when I do watch movies I will generally just turn them down very low and its not distracting at all. But I know for some it probably would still be something they wouldn't like so you could just turn them off. But mostly what I do is just turn on some music, put the lights on to something I like and relax.

Paper is still a slight safety risk as an overall recommendation to the public. It will also stain in most homes and can collect moisture in high humidity regions. If someone gets the paper wet for any reason (wet dog shaking off, kid spills, leaks, etc) with lower IP rated strips we have an issue. This is especially true if viewers aren’t properly utilizing inline fuses. I always fuse my lines and order strips in the IP60’s Improper power regulation and WLED settings can also cause the alum channel/heat sink to heat up. Usually things can’t get beyond 185°c and although paper combustion requires temperatures that are much hotter, Im not certain it’s a great material for recommendation to a mass audience as people tend to pull of the unimaginable with incompetence. Always make sure your videos recommend viewers understand proper Power Supply ratings, using proper fuses, proper soldering/ heat shrink, appropriate IP ratings for intended use/location, and proper heat sink/ cooling.

I was wondering if you could consider doing a tutorial of sorts on the different lighting effects that you like to use. The most difficult part for me is to find good looking effects. There's so many that it takes a lot of time to see what looks good. Cheers!

If you're using WLED, you can import/export the presets. So, if Chris is willing to share them, you can have the exact effects that you can see in his demos. One thing to note is that effects don't translate well between different numbers of LEDs/m (what may look fantastic on strips of 60/m, may look subpar on 144/m for an example). This is especially true when it comes to advanced effects with multiple effects overlapping via segments. Having a tutorial instead would definitely be just as helpful to many people and is a nice idea for a video, good suggestion!

Yes, definitely a plus when no clips, screws, drills or permanent holes in trim ... But the wife approval factor has to be about as high as it gets, right? ".... And don't worry hun, if after I spend this entire weekend installing these I. A. LEDs you just hate 'em? 12 hours to sizes, cut to length, solder, program, incorporate into H. A. And 90 seconds to make it look like NOTHING was ever there!" On a semi-related note, do you like WS 0.14? How many years has a 2-day matrices been on the wish list and roadmap? I'm SO happy, for all my needs anyways, WLED is a legit one-stop software shop!! I've had a couple OG Adafruit 2.5 pitch 64x64.... It is clear some of the programs for the 2D matrices were designed for a 64x64! As a video or 3 ideas worth, do you see yourself doing any 2D matrices with WLED anywhere in your house? CHEERS my friend, and heres to a LED lit, ESP32 - P4 400Mghz dual core powered 2023! P.S. - That's right! On board dual-core 400 MHz AND a single-core LP 40 MHz RISC-V processors, and an impressive array of hardware peripherals including display and camera interfaces and a hardware JPEG codec alongside the ones you’d expect from an ESP32 part. It’s got a whopping 768 KB of on-chip SRAM as well as 8 K of very fast cache RAM for intensive operations. But the part that I'm most interested in for this $24USD (estimated) isn't the 50 GPIO pins, or it's new USB OTG 2.0 Integration - it's the addition of on board hardware Pixel Processing Architecture (PPAi I believe is the official acronym) chip! Can you say dynamic progressive effects?!? Hehehe!!! This level of performance and feature set was once reserved for $100+ SoCs just TWO years ago.... Thoughts??

really interesting low cost idea. I just put on my aluminum framing and stick some LED stripe in it, ended up not super stoked about the "spots", especially when my strip density is rather low. remembered I seen this video of yours so trying it out with photocopy paper first - the diffusing effect works, just the fibre of the paper is visible. I might have to try different types of paper, or see if there's cheap white plastic sheet instead.

Its a little bit thicker and more rigid so I think it would work pretty well. Could also probably 3d print something but I still have not gone down the 3d printing path yet!

Hmm, would 3D printing a U channel also be a good idea to make this work for even cheaper? To get 8 feet I'd need to glue a bunch of 250mm long pieces together but I think it might work as well and hopefully the seams where the pieces are glued together won't be visible.

Thanks again for the great question! It really just depends on the look your going for. Connecting them in parallel means that they will all do the exact same thing. Thanks so much for watching! The two floor lamps on either side of the room are connected to the same power supply and same controller. I split the data coming off the controller (they call this running in parallel) so that both lights will be doing the same thing at the same time.

So the 2 floor lamps are doing the same thing at the same time since they are connected to the same controller with the data split (called running in parallel) However the 2 horizontal diffusers are connected to their own esp device. For everything I am just using the sync feature which is supposed to change all the effects/settings to the main one you are controlling. Now in my experience, when syncing this way, some animation/effects do seem to sync and do the same thing at the same time and then others, do not. I'm not sure why some do and some do not but If I truly did want them to do the exact same thing at the exact same time I would just connect them to one controller and split the data just like I did for the floor lamps. Hope that makes sense and I am horrible at putting together schemes so I don't have any of this written down!

Thanks for watching! I just got it off amazon. You can try it with any paper. Paper will all look a little different depending on how visible the fibers are and how thick it is!

I've been using BTF Lighting LED's for a while and I would highly recommend them Even the double sided tape they use works well and stays stuck. Very good and well balanced LED's.

thanks for taking the time to make this, I might do this myself cause I'm sure its much cheaper and I wont be wasting time returning bad diffusers to amazon. i will say its a bit hard to see how your diffuser work since you didn't use a solid color and had animations, itd be nice to just see solid colors thru the whole strip. I also have a question, with the ESP32, can you have it sync up with other wifi bulbs? i use sylvania wifi bulbs that are also on google home, it would be really cool to sync the led strips with it

Would love to do this for my kitchen under cabinet lighting project coming up. I just want to use a different diffuser material other than paper as it will be in the kitchen and is prone to water, humidity, heat oil stains and such. Any thoughts on a different diffuser material ?

Do you think it might work if I used a roll of bond paper typically used in old adding machines (printing calculators)? There's a roll at Staples: Bond Paper Roll, 2 1/4" x 125', which is the exact same width you cut your paper to, and the whole 125 foot roll is just $1.29. My only concern is whether or not it will behave the same way as the paper in your video and manage to be stiff enough to stay in place in the channel without curling inward or something. I might have to go feel it in person soon, and maybe get a test roll

Awesome video. Was the strip that you were using in the video the same width as the Govee m1. Would the 3/4 channel be to wide for one Govee m1 not allowing it to shine bright?
