Sunset at Haleakala National Park Summit (Maui, Hawaii)

Maui is known as Hawaii’s honeymoon destination largely due to its unparalleled sunsets. Where’s the best place to watch the sunset on Maui? Haleakala National Park! This is the highest peak on the island of Maui standing at 10,023 feet tall, Haleakala is a dormant volcano that overlooks the entire island and offers views of the Pacific Ocean and views inside the Haleakala Crater. While sunrise is the most popular time to visit the park, reservations are required from 3:00-7:00am because space is limited. We were advised by Maui locals to visit at sunset and we managed to find a secluded spot to watch sunset ALL BY OURSELVES! It was amazing. This was hands down the best sunset we witnessed on Maui. Being above the clouds was an incredible experience and one we highly recommend (just don’t forget a jacket, it gets cold up there!).

Hey Naomi! Back in December 2021 when we visited it was. However, I think they’ve since loosened their entry and mask requirements significantly. And yes! We did stay for a bit to see the stars and it was 100% worth it. Can’t recommend Haleakala enough! ☺️

Hi there! I don't have a specific spot saved on the map, but my best piece of advice would be to take note of the small pull offs on the way up to the summit. Then once you enjoy your time at the summit just make your way back down the road until you find a pull off that looks like it'll line up right with the sunset. Malasada's (donuts as you call them)....my favorite when I lived in Hawaii as a kid! Smart you saw the sunset; when we went 2 years ago we got up at 3a.m. to drive up and see the sunrise. It was so rainy and cloudy when we got up there you couldn't even see what direction the sun was coming up. Our favorite vacation photo was the 3 of us wrapped in the rental condos comforters soaking wet in the middle of a cloud...our "sunrise photo".😅

Loving your Aloha getaway and that awesome van. Great suggestion of sunset on haleakala v sunrise. We have been SO fortunate to experience sunrise, pre-covid and pre-reservations, packed but breathtaking. Once biking back down the mtn, a bit harrowing but def a bucket list.

Hey there! We don’t have the exact pinpoint saved on Google Maps, but if you go to the visitor center at the top of Haleakala then backtrack about a mile or so down the mountain, there are a few different pull offs along the way. Just find one that’s facing west. :) all of the spots were open as we were driving down so you should have your pick of spots!

Wife and I did the sunset at Hal. last year. Great video, but perhaps you'll agree its far more breathtaking in person. Something about it is more magical than seeing clouds below you from the tiny window of a plane.
