To Jason Marquez commenting above: I'm curious. Do you agree with D STR above that Dickie is quiet? He seems thoughtful from what I've seen in interviews. And then you hear stories of what a hello raiser he could be, relishing a fight. I know those traits are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Anyway, do you have news of how Dickie is faring healthwise nowadays? Anybody?

@@bluesdawg8014 Lucky Dawg lol! Pun intended! I would have loved doing a gig with the main-man Mr. Betts!!! I was really lucky way back in the early 70's, when I was a freelance writer for college newspapers and a rock n roll newspaper called: Good Times, based in New York metro area. One interview I did was with "The Dixie Dregs Band", and Twiggs Lyndon, the Allman Brothers road manager was now managing the Dregs! This was around 1977! Well,, long story short, after telling Twiggs that I was a dyed in the wool "Allman Bros". fan,, he invited me and my photographer friend Bob into his brand new Ford Cube van! And after we three got seated inside this small private walled off space, he asks me to reach under my seat and pull out this Gibson coffin case guitar case. So, I did, and he sort of snaps at me, "well,,,, open the thing up"! Well, I slowly did! And laying inside is ................................. ~DUANE ALLMAN'S 1959 SUNBURST LES PAUL~ ............~!~ YEPPP! I was stunned....... my jaw was open for a couple quick minutes, and Twiggs says, "Go on Sonny, pic it up, play it, it don't bite"! I finally picked it up and played it VERY carefully of course! And while looking it over carefully, I turned it over to look at the back, and there on the back of the body, was the name, "DUANE" spelled with the original frets from the guitar! Twiggs told me that Greg Allman, who gave this guitar to Twiggs for his service and dedication to the band, asked that he remove all the original frets off the guitar so that nobody would ever play on them again. And with the Dixie Dregs band getting ready to jump onstage,, Twiggs politely thanked me and Bob my photographer for the interview with him and the band, and we climbed carefully out of that cube van, and mosied on over to the concert stage and enjoyed what was one of the absolute BEST bands at the time,, and arguably till now!!! Lastly, Twigg's set me up with BMF productions to do an interview with .................................... ~DICKEY BETTS~ !!!!!!! TAKE CARE!!!!!

From some of the comments I'm reading it seems that Dickey has more than his share of fair weather fans. No one is at their prime forever and I'll choose Dickey as he is now over most of what I hear these days. I first heard "Blue Sky" in the summer of 1972 and was immediately blown away and still get that "feel good" feeling when I hear it all these years later. I really wish his singing in this video had been caught better.

I couldn't afford a Gibson, so I went with a Telecaster through a Marshall tube amp. It works better than I expected it would for what I do. It's important to get to know one or two guitars before you go crazy. And once you know one or two, you'll generally find that those are all you need.

Dickey had a wild side but he helped so many people spreading his music around he loved helping younger musicians like his Son Duane, Berry Duane Oakley and Derek Trucks just to name few. I would love to hear Dickey do an album of Jimmy Rogers songs and have a CD of his instrumentals ...the greatest instrumental songwriter ever .......the ventures songs are very simple compared to Betts compositions which are like symphonies ...every piece fits perfectly !!

Tell ya what, give the man some credit... this isn't a professional gig here.. sounds damn good for someone who hasn't played in public in a long time... rusty certainly, but great none the less!
