I teach ESL to first grade kids in Asia. They speak almost no English. I have used this method for about 2 years and found it to work extremely well. Kids are continually involved in the learning process and reflect on their learning by providing feedback to their partners. Though it may seem over the top, it is an excellent way of having the kids stay in the moment and engaged - kids DO love it. Nice video.. some of this will be carried over to my classroom...

I want to be YOU! You are so inspirational! I'm glad I discovered this in my 20th year of teaching! So much of WBL is what we do with our own children when they are little. This is a fabulous strategy for bringing "other peoples' kids" up to standard in behavior and focused on learning! I LOVE THIS!

Every teacher has their own style that works for their class. Clearly the call and repeat method works for hers. Just imagine how long it took her to teach them this morning routine? In elementary school, repetition and consistency is key.

Love this! The entire class was engaged! There was a plethora of learning objective occurring. It is important to incorporate movement into learning.

Well de part you see is the instruction part of introduction and guided practice. I would like to see how kids interact in independence practice.

Children who are engaged and using all of their senses learn a lot faster. The old way is failing us. My students love the positive whole brain techniques, modified for music class. It isn't just for fun though. Before WBT, it took my kinders weeks to know all the rules. Using gestures and fun, they knew then the second time they came to me. "Fun" activates the limbic system which puts things in longterm memory faster,

I am stunned at rule number 5, "Keep your dear teacher happy". It is not the task, goal or responsibility of students to make or keep their teacher or anyone happy. Would these same teachers learn and abide by a "keep your dear principal happy" rule? Raising your hand for permission to speak or to leave your seat are rules. Making smart choices should not be labelled as a rule. First of all it is such a blanket statement; what defines a smart choice? Making smart choices is a cognitive-emotional awareness that is learned by children as they develop.

Same here! I've never liked that principle. I think Rafe Esquith, the famous teacher from LA county once said that it wasn't his goal for kids to make him happy. It was to make kids care about their education and see their potential for success.

I agree. I’m thinking of trying whole brain teaching in my room but I think “make good choices” sounds better and I’d eliminate make your dear teacher happy as a rule

I know WBT is the subject of much debate, but as a skeptical special education teacher in an impoverished Baltimore City school, I can say it truly works!! WBT techniques keep students engaged and keep things lighthearted. They also activate all types of learners at the same time... when else in the classroom can you meet the needs of a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner all at the SAME time?!? Obviously, if it were used all day, it wouldn't be effective. No amount of monotony is effective at sustaining engagement. However, students crave the opportunity to move, talk, and participate actively in class. They hate sitting in their chairs listening. Giving them the opportunity to talk and move in a way that helps them memorize key concepts and classroom routines is truly the key to having a class full of engaged learners!! I have never seen so many smiles in my classroom - my students REQUEST it! We use it primarily to introduce new vocabulary and I've found that the gestures and use of rhythmic phrasing really make it "stick."

I noticed one little blonde getting bullied by a tall brunette. :( First during partner check at the their desk and then on carpet during peanut butter and jelly. I hope the teacher noticed it and spoke to them.
