Mike M Cannabis is a drug just like alcohol. It’s a less harmful drug than others, but still a drug. Lupe mentioned that because Rick was a heavy hard drug user. When he died, the blood tests showed traces of cocaine and a bunch of other drugs that would make a pharmacy jealous.

I was a kid when this song came out. I thought he was talking about Mary Jane from the Spider-Man comic books I was reading back then. My churchgoing mother thought he was talking about a woman, but my two older sisters knew the real deal. They told me, "You know he's talking about drugs, right? But don't tell Mama because she'll stop us from playing the song." That was a great time to be young.

I learned because I was around it when I was young (aunts and uncles: my Mom and Dad didn't smoke nor drink, that I remember, around us) and all I ever heard was people calling it Mary Jane, Grass, or Weed. When I heard the song that's the first thing I asked my Mom. She laughed about it and still laughs about it to this day.
