Great video, Chris! You mentioned raising the grain before you applied the iron acetate. I've done it both raising the grain and not raising the grain before applying the acetate, and they'll give you slightly different results. I find that not raising the grain first lets more of the acetate or tannin solutions absorb into the wood, deepening the colors. Both methods have their place, so it's not like one is better than the other - they're just different. But, as always, test it on some scrap to see what you prefer. And since these are all water-based finishing techniques, they'll raise the heck out of the grain. I normally let the project dry for a few days, then apply 2 coats of shellac based sanding sealer, then sand with 400 or 600 grit - just depends on what I have handy. After sanding the whole project, I start my topcoats. Keep up the good work and don't let those mattress folks get you down. They probably don't know the difference between iron acetate and iron oxide anyway...

Lots of great info, Chris! Seems like that tea really soaks in and enhances the grain pattern when you hit it with the iron acetate. Good stuff!

Thanks for this awesome video. I really like what the iron acetate + tea did to the pine in particular. Can't wait to try it myself.

Great information. I tried this mixture a few months back and wondered why it didn't work on pine who knew I needed to brew some tea. Thanks for all the info and the science.

Great demonstration. Thanks for sharing. I'll try some things out on pine. That is the most common wood over here. I might try as well beech of which I have old used flooring parts and which is also available as fire wood here.

Wow.... That's incredible the difference the tea treatment helped. I find that brown looks like crap compared to the blacker ones on the second run! Great video Chris!!! OMG I almost lost it with the bed commercial!!!!!!!!

Wow Chris this is awesome! thanks for sharing with us. I've tried a couple of times and I got not so dark and rather green tones that I wasn't satisfied with. I suspect I was not using enough steel wool and also not using destilled vinegar but just normal kitchen vinegar. Any experience on this? thanks again man!

Cool! I'll try your suggestion!

i used cider vinegar, maybe id be less bad with regular one, but i find it stinks pretty bad after the wood is done, do you have a trick for that? i tough of doing a wash with baking soda, but i'm wondering if it would screw the stain

Finally a good use for tea. To me, tea is just good water gone bad. You can now make an interesting multicolored tiled cuttingboard. How good do these colors hold up under daylight?

HAHA!! Too bad about that sponsorship! Great info -- not enough tannin in the wood, just add some! P.S. -- Saw on Facebook that someone is concerned that you may burn some hair on your face because of hydrogen pressure build up in the jar. Hell!! If this is true, I'm gonna stick my lighter in the jar when I open it just to hear the cool whooshey-pop sound!!!

***** I actually already knew that, but I was just poking fun at the *DOCTOR* that was warning everybody about he dangers of Iron Acetate... He didn't say anything directly to or about you, just posted a "I watched this video..." comment.
