@@rocktidwell898 i did a rack and pinion job on a dropped 91 acura integra and it was a nightmare to get it aligned. Make sure you have a way to tow the car to an alignment shop after the change. You can mark everything too but i dont think it ends up coming out perfect. It was probably one of the harder jobs i had to do on a vehicle so far but i was also just learning then. Im sure a true mechanic wouldn't have had as many issues knowing work arounds from experience. Id love to see a chris fix video on that too

the core support can be a beefy piece of metal though it usually isn't. windstars have a pretty solid subframe that's heavy duty and welded. other cars have bolt on core supports or welded supports that do not have much structural integrity. as for jacking up the motor, you can usually get away with a 2x4 cut off under the oil pan if you gingerly jack it up and make sure the motor is moving independently from the chassis. jacking from a small area on the engine block increases the odds of causing damage to external motor components and injury due to less surface area making contact. i learned that the hard way when i was a newbie. i would stay away from jacking from mating surfaces because that has a higher chance of causing a leak. i just wanted share my insight. with that said, i like what you're doing and i like to see people maintaining their vehicles. knowledge is a great thing to share.

ChrisFix The Ford Workshop manual actually specifically says to jack up on the transmission pan with a block of wood for the trans mount on the other side. For the mount you're working on here, though, it says to lift from the top (as if anyone's really going to do that for a motor mount). I just thought someone might find that little nugget interesting. Thanks again for the video!

Chris, I really enjoy your videos! They've been very helpful. This particular video helped me save my brother around $300 by changing the rear motor mount on his 1998 Ford Windstar ourselves. However, I wanted to let you know that the torque specs of 85 ft pounds you claim in the video was too high for the top bolt on for us. Unfortunately, we broke the bolt when trying to tighten it to 85 ft. lbs. Afterwards I looked in the Haynes manual and it says that the top bolt should be 50-68 and the bottom should be 65-87 ft. lbs. We were successful on the second install. Just wanted you to know so you could add an annotation in the video (at 9:07 and 9:31) in order to help others keep from making the same mistake. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

Excellent Video. NEWBIE QUESTION: When you jack up the engine, don't you have to worry about putting strain on the transmission, exhaust, and all the other things the engine is connected to?
@Fireflyepic
@Fireflyepic Жыл бұрын
Extremely late reply here, but for other people: no, you don't need to worry about that. The engine is engineered to move independently from the frame-- this is necessary in order to dampen vibration. The transmission and exhaust are placed on hangars or mounts of their own in the pursuit of vibration isolation, which thus allow for movement. If movement wasn't allowed on the engine, then it'd be vibrating on the frame and would be an unpleasant -- and loud -- ride.

Chris your a badass, I've been watching your videos for some time now! I've got a couple general questions, you seemed to just jack up the motor with no problems. The motor isn't hard connected to the vehicle? I always imagined that something external on the motor would snap. But it seems that the engine is just floating on the motor mounts? Is this the same for the transmission drive train? That its just "floating" under the car? I've got a 96 Silverado with 336k original miles on it. The truck is all original and I'd like to go through and replace all the bushings and lube the chassis. So my next question. I couldn't find a video with your truck. I don't like jacking up my vehicles from the side frame, I feel like it's an unnatural movement. Where is the best place to jack the whole front of my truck at the same time, and also the best place to jack my rear? Thanks, I hope some way your getting checks in the mail from doing these videos. The way you present them is fantastic and inspiring. Your the man. Patrick
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 8 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Calabrese there is wiggle room with the motor and tranny. The motor vibrates and moves a lot so they design it with space. I like jacking the rear up from the differential but for some reason every owners manual says not to... I never had a problem. The front crossmember that cradles the engine and holds the suspension is what I use to jack up the front of the truck.

Hey ChrisFix - I see you use loctite on most bolts, however I noticed that you often don't use an thread lubricant - which I thought is interesting as these bolts will go untouched for a long period of time in harsh conditions - wouldn't it be advisable to use some type of lubricant on these bolts to ensure easy removal and providing some protection against the elements?

Lubrication of suspension bolts and engine mounts is not something you'd want to do better off to just put the bolt on torque it down and then paint brush on some old motor oil if you feel the need but if u put it in the threads how would the locktite do it's job? Bolts hardly ever rust where the nut is it's always usually the spots that are open to the elements.

Chris, My 1988 porsche 944 will not start. I think it could be the fuel pump because when I took it off the trailer it started and it drove off, but on the way into my garage it died and wouldn't start. Is this the only thing it could be or is there more. I tried pressure testing but the port on the tester was too small for my shrader valve. It would only stay on the end and not spin all the way down, but even with the tester only on the end of the valve I read 0 pressure. Thanks and keep those vids coming they are really helpful!

argonian bilbo I would get an adapter so you can do a fuel pressure test and get a good reading. Do you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the key to the "run" position? Check this out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/laC7fYinepmGnJI Let me know if you get that pressure reading!

ChrisFix yes I hear a buzzing sound, but it coming from the engine bay. The pump is in the back. There is no sound in the back

Chris I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute. The mechanic at a Mazda dealer showed me that I have a bad motor mount. Looks exactly like yours. I think they call it the 3rd mount. Mine is compressed and leaked out the fluid inside it. They quoted $400 to replace it, but I declined service. The mechanic said he would just tighten it down as much as possible so it doesn't shake the engine. Is that ok for the time being? Not sure how long I'll keep this car. The engine runs fine and it doesn't shake or move a lot like yours was doing. Should I lose sleep over it?

hey guys, quick question here! i have a 1999 Lexus es300 1mz VVT with 180,xxx miles. i know the motor mounts are bad and need replacing because the motor moves when shifting into gears. my question and biggest concern is, could bad motor mounts cause a hard shift into 2nd gear from 1st gear? everytime I stop at a red light or stop sign or anything, after moving off again it will over rev and shift hard into 2nd gear. every other gear shift is normal. downshifts are normal. only does it from 1st to 2nd gear shifts. it is motor/trans mounts or do i need to get the trans serviced?
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 4 жыл бұрын
From what you told me, it sounds like you just need to get your motor mounts replaced and that should solve the hard shift issue!

You have to use wood or something similar. Also it won’t break if you use a large piece that can handle it.

01 Pontiac Grand Prix. What is a decent motor mount that won't break the bank? Everybody on the internet is saying that anchor and DEA are junk. I am not looking to spend $80 at the general motors dealership. I am not real hard on my car will a anchor or DEA Mount be good enough for me?

Weese Haha, I am glad the video was timed perfectly! Let me know how your motor mount replacement goes! If they are the originals, you might want to spray some penetrating fluid on them! Here is stuff that will make any bolt come off: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIjYh3V8id-igcU

Hey Chris.. long shot but I'm desperate here. I'm trying to fix my motor mount (front passenger - the one you don't fix). The previous owner must have not bolted the bolts in correctly because after I hit a pot hole they seem to be missing. Is there anyway you have some idea of the size of threads that these bolts are?

Much better, pointing out the use of jack stands. Watched the older video first... Thing to remember is that the car is on jack stands and solid, that's good but once you loosen the motor mounts and jack up the motor, now you have that transmission/engine unit which can fall separate from the car frame itself. Just play it safe, you're too young to be losing your digits :-)

Hey Chris. You help me alot with your videos on helping me save money by doing the work myself. Another question for you. I have this creak problem. Its when i shift into Drive and reverse ( AT) tranny from a complete stop. Then press the gas My bushings and suspension feel solid. No broken boots or grease leaking. According to different car forums alot point to either a tranny mount or engine mount. Upon watching your video my engine doesnt hop around nor my tranny clunk. And another thing i hear it alot on ford escapes (taxis) searched the forum there no answers. Have any ideas what could it be? My local shop said everything looks good. And his only suggestion was to replace all my mounts since my car has over 118k

bahlowwings The creek can be anything. So it ONLY happens when you shift into drive or reverse? Can you tell where the noise is coming from? Like have someone shift the car and you stand outside and listen (dont stand in front or behind the car to be safe).
@bahlowwings
@bahlowwings 9 жыл бұрын
ChrisFix so after reading more info on the creak i found a helpful tip which can also diagnose a bad mount. I guess its called the the power brake method or something like that. So you press and hold the brakes with ebrake down. And put the car in drive/reverse and press the gas a few. And bam the creak came with this method. So looks like i need new mounts.

The cruise control light lets you know it is activating. So with no light, you might have a bad cruise control unit.
