Hey I love your videos! Just a little tip and I'm not sure it applies to all manufacturer but you should loosen the control arm bolts so that the bushing from the lower control arms doesn't get prematurely torn. When the pinch bolt is still tight while the control arm goes down, you're twisting the bushing to a point where it gets torn. But all in all, lobe your video.

Hey Chris, 99.999% of the time, your videos have more than enough info for me to understand every little thing. In this one, regarding damping - when you explained the compression and rebound - I understand now how the shock acts for those, but how does each effect the ride of the car? I am having difficulty thinking of how the harder or easier compression and rebound would feel from inside the car or change the ride. Thanks for all you do, your channel is easily my most useful subscription ever.
@sw967 жыл бұрын
Compression and Rebound are usually balanced with each other (if I recall correctly rebound is usually about half the compression rate). Compression affects how quickly the suspension reacts to change, so a higher compression rate firms up the suspension. So under braking you'll get less front end dive, under acceleration you'll get less rear end squat and with cornering you'll get less body roll (though sway bars play a larger role here, no pun intended) so firmer is usually better for performance driving. Softer compression will allow the suspension to react to bumps in the road reducing the shock transmitted to the car. Generally firmer shocks result in harsher ride but better handling. Rebound is linked to compression, it's how quickly the suspension will return to rest, too little rebound can cause the car to bounce around on the springs, too much and the suspension will return slowly causing a much harsher ride as your spring may essentially have extra pre-load on it when it hits the next bump. I'm no expert so consider this only a basic idea of what they do.
@chrisfix7 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I will try to simplify it and also dont think too much into it. So compression is exactly what is sounds like, it is how much force it takes to compress the shock aka move it inwards (make it smaller). Rebound it the opposite. It is how much energy it takes to move the shock outwards aka extending it (making it longer). Normally these settings are set from the factory and you cannot change them. With the double adjustable coilovers you can change them and make it stiffer or looser. Hopefully that simplified it a little more and makes some sense.

Exactly what I needed, thank you

I put coil over springs on the rear of my Mach 1 Mustang 40 years ago. Air shocks would wrap around shock since it was stem to stem. Expanded the stock type shocks as far out as they go and clamped springs on them. Compressed and installed. This give extra ride height and a little smoother ride on the rough country roads of Tennessee back then.

15:19 I mean the gap between the coilover and the wheel is fixed, because the coilover is mounted to the knuckle... negative or positive camber won't affect that gap
@chrisfix3 жыл бұрын
I was making sure the design of the coilover wouldn't interfere with the wheels I have on, sometimes that can happen depending on the set up being run!
@barmetler3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisfix That definitely makes sense... it's just that you said "because the top of our tire is tucked in a little bit that way [...]" (referring to the camber angle), so I hope you see where I'm coming from. I hope I don't come across as too nitpicky, I was just a little confused... So I'll take the chance to tell you that I definitely enjoyed the video (even though I'll never install coilovers in any car XD)

Hey Chris is your preload set up correctly? Because I cringed at 14:29 when you went and touched the spring with your hand and the spring moved.... Just curious and trying to help
@chrisfix7 жыл бұрын
Thanks and great question, the preload on these is done when you drop the car down onto the ground. With the spring completely lowered like I have it, there is about 1in of movement the spring can move (since the wheels are completely extended downwards off the ground which never happens when you drive (or so you hope that never happens lol). Once the car is lowered, the springs engage the top seat and that is when they are loaded.
