I find this video unrealistic due to the lack of cursing, throwing tools, sweating, calling friends for help, busting knuckles against something sharp, breaking a part then needing to wait a week for the new one to get there then another one breaks.

JahSmokebuds, Chris has specified in other videos that he has indeed painted his undercarriage and suspension parts like control arms, etc. If you have access to air tools, an air chisel will get ANYTHING out, including rust-welded stuff. It is well worth the money, even for a cheap pancake compressor and the cheapest air chisel.

Basically a video on how to locate in general the wheel adjustment camber,castor , and toe settings for all the different types of vehicles for the rear but front would also be good to review. I imagine lateral links bolts if your car has them adjust the camber but with no tie rod on the back does that mean you cann't adjust the toe in/out. I know most vehicles don't allow adjustment of the castor that is more the position of the struts on the body so one would have to modify the unibody to get different castor ... and so normally wheel alignment is only adjusting camber and toe.

Hey Chris I keep on hearing about the part in the suspension systems called the king pins,and can you tell me and others these things. 1.Description of the part(include the photo of it). 2.Where does the part go to i.e. where does it hook on to.? 3.Avearage time for the job from start to completion of it. 4.What years of cars and trucks have KING PINS in them.? I'll wait for your answer on this..
@chrisfix10 жыл бұрын
TheSirjohn2012 A king pin is the main steering pivot for the car or truck. This is old school technology and mostly obsolete. Today most cars use ball joints. Just search Google images for "king pin steering" and you will see horse drawn carriages, tractors, etc using this style pivot for steering. The part is basically in the hub (where the wheel attaches) and allows the tire to turn.

My nut won’t turn without the end. I have loosened the whole thing by at least two turns and the nut seems to be fused to the end.

i've never done the same method you did at 2:05 . i just hit the knuckle of course with the nut in place. wouldnt your method slowly ruin the thread?
@chrisfix9 жыл бұрын
Cysar Soriano I never had any luck hitting the knuckle and I was taught to never hit the knuckle with a hammer (maybe for structural reasons?). I have never had a problem with damaging threads since the nut is all the way on. If you think about it, for a ball joint, the whole weight of the car plus the force of a bump is held on by a nut and the threads dont get damaged so it is the same concept. In reality, I should have picked up one of these but I try to show people how to do the job using common tools: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YVWHOE/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003YVWHOE&linkCode=as2&tag=chri0e2-20&linkId=Y3YL62XRFDHEV2D2

Hey ChrisFix I'm going to replace my outter tie rod on my 02 olds alero tomorrow. im wondering will i HAVE to get an allignment after? the guy at the autoparts store said not really as long as i count how many turns it took to take it off etc, and i really don't want to spend all that extra money for an alignment . I'm almost 1000 miles from home out of town and wondered if getting this replaced and not having it aligned would be bad for the trip home. I just don't want to be stuck on the side of the road somewhere!
@chrisfix10 жыл бұрын
The answer to this is maybe. The new part you will get will most likely not be the same size so even if you count the threads you will not get it perfectly aligned. The other problem is even if you do count the threads, if it happens to be a 1/4in off, you can have an issue. You will know when you drive the car because there will be pulling or if it is really bad, the steering wheel will be out of line and there might even be vibration. For a 1000mi trip I would want to get an alignment. I know they cost $80 or so but that is worth the damage that you can do to your $150 tire or worse if you lose control. On the other hand, you might be able to get it in place and measure the tie rod with a tape measure and really make sure you get the new one in close to the old one. And, if everything feels good while test driving, it might be ok.
@STREETRACEN4U10 жыл бұрын
ChrisFix Thanks for the reply, yeah i got the tie rod replaced the day after i commented. I know i said i was going to do it myself, but i decided to play it safe and let somebody whose done this plenty of times before do it. My steering wheel is still nice and centered and the car drives alot better now that it was replaced. They said my whole wheel was about too come off, the vibrating from the bad tie rod shook all the lugnuts loose and where only a few turns by hand of coming off completely! he measured and marked with a marker to make sure everything went back into the same spot and was the same length.. my car pulls *VERY SLIGHTLY* to the left on the freeway going 75mph but it has always done this for years so i see no change in my alignment. I'm not too worried about burning through tires because i get them used for $20 and usually have very decent tread. thanks.

@zeugnimod110 жыл бұрын
When I put my tie rod and give it my 20 spins about 1/8 space is left between the tie rod and bolt and when I go ahead and tight the bolt it turns along with the bar that goes into the inner rod. Is tha normal? Shouldn't the bolt turn by it self against the tie rod?
@chrisfix10 жыл бұрын
I dont think I understand. Why did you count the spins if the jam nut was still on the inner tie rod? Just spin it until it touches the jam nut and then tighten it. I guess it doesnt really matter because you will need an alignment anyhow. When you tighten the jam nut, you need to hold the outer tie rod just like did in the video @ 4:40 while you turn the jam nut. You can see my inner tie rod turns while I turn the bold as well so dont worry. Does this make sense? It sounds like you did it right.
@therealderekchurch5 жыл бұрын
Honestly the only part I dislike about this is when he's trying to undo the tie rod from the knuckle, that's not actually how you do it what you do is you hammer on the knuckle wear the tie rod is attached which loosens the taper

Was quote $682 this week for my wife's 2015 Nissan Altima by some fast buck artists. Spent $120 on two outer rods, already had a torque wrench. Saved money. Jokers also quoted $1984.43 for two lower control arms for the fact that we needed to replace the ball joints. Spent $400 on those two, and since the tie rods are taken off to do the control arms it's really not a big job. Two hours if you're slacking.
