Great job Chris! Very well explained! Anyone looking for a step-by-step list, I made one, but all credit still goes to Chris! Jump starting a car: 1. Red lead on positive terminal on the dead battery 2. Red lead on positive terminal on the good battery 3. Black lead on negative terminal on the good battery 4. Black lead on a bare piece of metal on the dead car(Grounding point) 5. Start the good car and let it run for about 2 minutes 6. Start the dead car 7. Remove black lead from the chosen grounding point on the dead car 8. Remove red lead from the positive terminal on the dead battery 9. Remove read lead from the positive terminal on the good battery 10. Remove black lead from negative terminal on good battery DO NOT LET ANY OF THE LEAD’S ENDS TOUCH EACH OTHER AT ANY POINT If dead car doesn’t start: If the dead car slowly drags- Let the good car run for about 5 minutes to allow it to charge the dead car’s battery If the dead car is really close to starting- have the person in the good car rev the engine to around 2000rpm and hold it there while the person in the dead car tries to start it again If the dead still isn’t running- 1. Check to make sure all connections are tight and secure 2. Try moving the dead car’s negative lead to a different ground point 3. Unfortunately, road side assistance or another method of obtaining a good battery
@DJ-Coma3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 1 minor correction. On Step 7 you are not attached to the negative terminal, you are grounded to a piece of metal. So it should read something like “remove the grounded black wire on the dead car from metal”

one time when I was stuck with a dead battery, the guy helping noticed the battery terminals had some corrosion on it, its like a white powdery substance, it was preventing a solid connection with the Battery Cable clamp. Lucky he had a wire brush with a wood handle. He scraped the white stuff off the terminal posts and then we were able to get the car started. Just wanted to mention for others in case they notice this when jump starting the car.

@louofm127 күн бұрын
Some baking soda and water work well, for cleaning corrosion. I recommend taking off.the terminal so you can clean it where it makes contact. Also, a bit of dialectic grease helps prevent corrosion and makes a better contact. Also recommend checking that the connection is not loose....so wiggle the wire a bit. My son was having problems with his battery not holding a charge and dying. I noticed that the connection was loose. Simply clamped it down again

I'd recommend especially for this video also following 2 tips: First: Right after you've stared your truck (donator vehicle) - Turn on some high power consumers, like the Headlights. This prevents voltage drops and most important voltage peaks, when you start the van (receiver vehicle), caused by the high power drain. Voltage peaks can damage the electronic parts like the PCM, ECM or other important devices like the Airbag module. Right after your receiver vehicle started, you should also turn on the headlights and eg., because the external power (delivered by your donator) will also cause first a massive voltage drop, than a dangerous voltage peak, right in that moment when you remove the jumper cables. Again your headlights will "absorb" those peaks. Second: In case I jump start a vehicle, my donator car runs just below 2000rpm, in this area your alternator works at the highest efficiency area, providing good ammount of amperes. So you don't need those "2 Minutes of charging" after the batteries are connected. (Sorry for my inproper use of the english language, in case of some misspelling feel free to correct my text) Cheers from Germany, Ferdi!

Very cool video! There is also a jump-starting trick for manual transmission cars in case if you don't have cables on hand or there is no another car to be a "donor": you can roll downhill or just push the car to some speed, then shift to 2nd gear (not 1st, because it's too short and if the car moves too fast you can damage the transmission and/or the engine) and then try to start the car while moving. When the gear is engaged, the engine is moving, so you basically bypass the starter, and fuel pump and spark plugs should work even with a nearly dead battery, because they need much less energy than a starter. And when the car is started, the alternator begins to do its job and charges the battery. Done it couple times, helped a lot. Though be cautious to do it only on a long straight wide roads, because the power steering will be most likely not working (in my case it wasn't) and it will be harder to push brakes and steer.

Batteries can explode. I had one explode on me when I tried to start a pickup. The battery was defective and sparked inside it. The top blew off and sprayed acid everywhere. Also I believe it is bad for your alternator to jump start a vehicle while your engine is running. The problem is that a starter motor draws a large amount of amperage while is is engaged. A V8 starter can draw more than 750 amps at first. I have seen a battery post melt trying to power a stuck starter. This puts a very large overload on the supply alternator. The diodes that convert the A.C. power to D.C. inside it burn out from the large overload. Remember, the supply alternator is trying to charge a weak or dead battery at the same time as a heavy load from a starter motor. Alternators do not like this very much. Take a look at the size of the wire coming from the battery to the starter compared to the wire coming off the alternator to the battery. To prevent harming the alternator, you can run the jumping vehicle for a while to charge the dead battery before trying to start the dead vehicle, just be sure and shut the jumping vehicle OFF prior to starting the other one. Sometimes it is hard to find a good ground on modern cars/trucks so I usually connect directly to the battery terminals on both vehicles. Always connect the cables to the LOW battery FIRST and the good one last. Is likely that the only battery putting out hydrogen gas is the low battery. Then remove the cables from the GOOD battery First. This prevents any sparking near the problem battery. I have been doing it this way for 50 years and not burned out any diodes yet. I have also seen many cases of replaced alternators caused by doing a jump with the engine running. Just because many people get away with it, does not make it right. Better to do it right than have to replace an expensive alternator. One thing that will help start the dead vehicle is large JUMPER cables and not small BOOSTER cables. Most booster cables are 10 to 4 AWG wire. JUMPER cables are 2 to 00 AWG. 00 Gauge wire is about the width if my little finger. This is measuring the size if the wire, not the insulation around it. Mine are 00 size and weigh about 30 pounds. I made these but you can buy the ready made ones for around $100. Aircraft electrician for 23 years and enginer/technician for another 20. Lee

@Enigma McC Hi. It sounds to me like the battery cables on the dead car were not making a good connection to the battery posts. When you connected the jumper clamps to the battery post clamp it moved it enough to make an electrical connection to the post allowing the car to start. I have had many cases of no starts that was just caused by loose/corroded cable clamps. Just clean the connectors and put them back on and everything is good again. Cleaning the posts and clamps good and spraying with battery post corrosion protection really does work for a year or two. I have 16 lead acid batteries in service at my residents now. Lee

What you said about finding a good ground is extremely important. I tried three different grounds trying to jump my car today and only got some flashing lights and clicking. I connected the negative to the negative and my car started first try. I almost think this whole "you need to have the negative lead grounded" thing is a hoax trying to get you to buy a new battery or take your car to the shop. As long as your outside with some wind I don't think there is any chance of an explosion.
@stephenarling16675 жыл бұрын
Leland, I too have had a defeective battery explode, blasting the caps and acid far into the air, even thought I followed the recommended connection sequence. Wearing goggles and staying far away from the low battery when connecting the good are smart ways to protect your eyes from this hazard.

Thanks man for that explanation, I was looking for these answers, now I know how to save your alternator, just charge the dead battery for few minutes before starting the dead car and remove cables from both cars before starting the dead car,

Lol I'm a female with a lot of mechanical experience, and I've had a lot of jobs where I might jump start various types of vehicles more times in one day, than most people do in 5 years. I was originally taught to clamp to metal on the dead side, just like your video. I never asked why it was done that way, I think I just assumed it was somehow safer or more efficient. I've had SO MANY PEOPLE go out of their way to "correct" me usually while lathering on some thick mansplaining, when they see me clamp to metal. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, THAT HAS TO GO ON THE BATTERY" 😂😂 and I'd sit there trying to defend myself, knowing damn well I was doing everything correctly, but never could explain to people WHY I'm right and they're wrong. Nobody took me seriously unless they knew me well enough to know my work history/skill set. SO MANY TIMES I've just let people butt in and re-do my "mistake", hook the shit up WRONG while I stay silent, just because it's easier than trying to argue with a brick wall. This video has made me feel SO VALIDATED 😂 and seeing all the comments from astonished people who always did it the "wrong" way ....its like reading a miniature version of my life.

Thank you for making detailed videos like this. I see comments like "I don't know how I got here/why I'm watching this" and that would have been me a few years ago. I'm GLAD for teachers like yourself now that I am learning. What about jumping in the rain? Safe? Scotty Kilmer says to make sure donor car is OFF before attempting to start Dead car. What do you think? Does this not apply on modern cars? I was taught to connect them in the same way but to disconnect in the exact REVERSE (dead ground, donor ground, dead +, donor +). What's the difference? Is it a good idea to turn on the radiator on the dead car when it starts in order to further reduce risk of frying the system? If you add to the video, please say something about gauges of jumper cables and what they mean. Thank You Chris :)

Tips: If your car starts, leave it for running for AT LEAST 30 minutes. Always check that both battery terminals are snug first. Sometimes they come loose.

Michael Chavez yeah me and my friend had to jump his car and then we took it on a small road trip and we turned it off at a small store and went to get in and the car wouldn't turn over. All it was is the terminals had been loose to begin with and jumbling them around while jumping the car and then driving caused the car not to start. All we did was make them snug and the car fired right up

Very helpful tip from Chris that if your ground point doesn't seem to work, to try another one. I tried the default ground point (the hood latch) on a car today and it simply wouldn't ground. Switched over to a strut tower brace bolt that I brushed with a metal brush, and the lights on the dead car immediately came on. Getting the digitals right sometimes is difficult for a gal!

Loved the info for a good refresher and also if anyone is still unable to start their vehicle where it just cranks over and there is no spark, dis-arm your immobiliser as this is one of the issues with push-start ignition systems. If this still doesn't get you going then check your IGN, fuel or ECM fuses as these can sometimes blow with trying to jump-start from a vehicle that has a high Ah battery.

I have known the procedure. When disconnecting the cables, shouldn't we do it in the reverse order that we do when connecting them. I mean, disconnecting the negative cables from their posts in both cars, then disconnecting the positive cables. I think, the best part of this video is the portable jump power source. I want to have it, so I don't have to wait for and begging help from other car which seems not easy these days.
