Im pretty new to cowboy action shooting, and to firearms in general. But ive come to love the whole thing. The mechanics and technique behind it is amazing. Thank you for sharing the "how to"s on this. Ive always wondered how it was done. My Next step is to get a decent single action and practice. Unloaded ofcourse hahaha

Love these videos. I am against cocking while still in holster as shown. I practice quick draw. When I was younger was very serious. Practiced empty for a long time, then tried live rounds. If you cock it as you grab it while in the holster as shown, in my opinion, it is too easy to bump that tigger or slip off the thumb. In '79 and I spent 7 days in the hospital where that slug hit me in the calf. I went to cocking it once it clears the holster on the way up and fire as it comes level.

There are no replicas of which I'm aware that won't break, sometimes on the very first time one attempts to practice. Even the real ones need tuning, timing and a few internal modifications to hold up to the stress.

Some folks would simply delete such comments, but I truly get a kick out of such eloquence, erudition, and intellectual acumen. Since it contains no actual profanity beyond one abbreviation, let's let it stand on its own merits. LOL! Hey, I'm just a hobbiest sharing what I've figured out...if you have a better way, then by all means, PLEASE feel free to post a video response so that I and others may learn from it. ... and thanks for the belly laugh!

Yes, and yes, respectively! This is why this kind of Hollywood fast draw should NEVER be done with live ammo. Don't confuse the sport of fast draw with real-world, live ammo shooting techniques...the two rarely if ever intersect. When doing fast draw with a projectile, it is a wax bullet, often powered only by a primer (no powder at all!). Adding a small deflector plate to the bottom of the holster helps keep it all reasonably safe.

@kamasutraguy-- Lined? If you mean with leather, yes, but there's much more to it. This rig is lined with steel plate between the inside and outside layers of leather, throughout the holster "boot" (not just around the cylinder), and it extends up through the shank into the oval hip plate. The leg tie-down is actually unnecessary. When properly fitted, this rig is is solid as a rock. That kind of consistancy makes everything else that follows, a whole lot easier.

1- not for drawing, but if you go for multiple shots using two hands, the hammer can bit your fanning hand if your timing is off. 2- It rides higher than in movies, but the gun butt is still below the top of the belt, so I couldn't say high-ride. Lower is not faster...the arm has much more power and quickness when slightly bent, than when straight. 3- the holster boot, shank, and up through the oval hip plate are all lined with steel, made by Alfonso's of Hollywood.

Thanks for the information! You are a natural teacher. I recently became interested in shooting single action revolvers (specifically the Vaquero). I saw a comment where a viewer was critical of cocking the weapon while it is holstered. I understand the concern for safety, but doesn't a gun like the Vaquero have safety features that would prevent a discharge if the hammer was dropped unintentionally (no trigger )?
@ChrisGordan14 жыл бұрын
@mpietro3000 1) Get a Ruger New Vaquero in .45LC, 4-5/8" bbl. 2) practice slow fire hipshooting first, find and get comfortable with your natural point of aim. 3) THEN practice drawing slowly, getting to that natural hip-shooting position SMOOTHLY.

Some questions. 1- Do the old style hammers that have the firing pins cause any problems with drawing, that the new flat hammers dont? 2 - Im looking closely at your gun leather and am wondering....It rids high on your hip. Is the hight a consideration? and also, is your leather steel re-enforced?

@DeltaBravo1216 I don't recommend it, at least not on tanaka's Colt SAA. Those are not very reliable, they break easily.

Check the vendors at gunfighter(dot com) for wax ammo. They are LOADS cheaper than live ammo. Tuning for thumbing generally runs around $150-$200 , full-house competion guns can can cost hundreds more.

I do believe, good sir, the words you are looking for are "too" and "convoluted". I'm a beginner and found nothing at all complicated (that's an easy one to spell) in his presentation. And one should never bring a shank to a gun fight. :)
@ChrisGordan13 жыл бұрын
@DMEII Thanks for posting. None of these techniques are for use with live ammo. It doesn't even take a physical mistake- if the trigger breaks, the gun (Colt SAA design) goes bang. Thumbcocking while in the holster is NEVER done with real-world, live ammo situations. These are techniques of the SPORT of fast draw, that grew out of the western movies. They are used with blanks or primer-powered wax bullets ONLY. Even then, there are risks, but they are reasonable if one is well practiced.
@RBlatch4d11 жыл бұрын
Thank you Chris for clarifying this is not for live ammo. Many people are fooled to think guns=glory. Its a fun sport, but a 357 can leave you with one amputated leg. Yeah God and pass the ammunition.

I would like to see specific Brands of holsters recommended. Likely there's a wide range of quality. I don't mind paying a high price for something that's really Superior. From what I can tell the holster should be molded to the exact gun It was bought for. Seems to me that a drop loop should have plenty of Ridgid it's. I don't want to trust a knee tieI too much. I'd rather spend my time with fast-draw than 3 gun.

The rig in the video is an Alphonso #1 (iHollywood, CA), made for me in the early 90’s. It’s lined with steel from the boot, through the shank, into the oval hip plate. With its double stitching and other details, it is the finest example I’ve seen of what might be called an “old school” fast draw rig. The tie down is really just cosmetic, and in fact, is uncomfortable if you are walking, because the holster is absolutely rigid and does not move. There have been many great rigs from Ernie Hill, Ted Blocker, and others, but I think the maker whose work is most common today might be Bob Mernickle, with the FD-7 (for WFD competition), and several models he makes for CFD specs as well. I have a two gun “Hollywood type” twin buscardero with a forward rake (Model HW-9), and can certainly attest to the quality. Those are the only two makers with whom I have personal experience, but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sam Andrew’s (in Florida) Adams leather ( in Texas, I think) and maybe a few others. Choice of gun leather is too personal to cover it all, because of my somewhat limited experience with the work of many great makers.
@ChrisGordan16 жыл бұрын
The rig in the vids is strictly for Hollywood style fast draw. As beautifully crafted as it is, it is NOT a good general purpose holster at all. Check the "authentic western" sections of Bob Mernickle Holsters and Alfonsos of Hollywood (who made my FD rig. Mernickle's site is much more extensive, Alfonsos only shows some of their products. Either maker will have or make anything you could want. A snug-fitting higher riding hip holster is much better for all around use.
