I remember watching the match he's talking about at 2:39 when it was originally broadcast. That match was a storytelling masterpiece and he's right, the crowd absolutely lost their minds. People forget how massively over the Y2J character was in 2000. Some nights some crowds he literally got bigger pops than The Rock, and this was during the height of the attitude era.

That's the match that drew me into becoming a WWE fan. A month or so prior to this, I was flipping through channels and happened to catch Jericho's entrance. Very charismatic entrance and stance. Engaged with the crowd. And he had a mic. I don't remember how many more episodes of RAW or Smackdown I caught- but Jericho really caught my attention and I started intentionally tuning in. At this time, he was feuding and trash-talking Stephanie McMahon. When I saw the match that was stricken from the book, it cemented me as a fan. I doubt anyone expected for him to win (and in the end, he didn't), as he was clearly the mid-card underdog and it was just a RAW match and not a pay-per-view. So it was such a shock when it seemed he won the title. If he had been given the right push, I think WWE could have had another star on par with Rock and Austin. He was good on the mic and I think at this time, he was a very charismatic babyface (even though he's been mostly known for his heel runs).

@@Speedyreedy1218 I wouldn't say that. The attitude era was great but it still had its failures. Tazz's run was an absolute trainwreck.
@Speedyreedy1218
@Speedyreedy1218 2 жыл бұрын
@@Almatty I said every act was over. I didn't say every angle was great. Plenty of examples. 1. Tazz over, despite not winning a title. He got a crazy pop at the Rumble 00. Got pop wrestling HHH in Philly APR 00 as ECW champ. His feud vs Lawler in the summer was a catalyst into his announcing career. 2. Bossman's sympathy card to Show's deceased father was so cruel it was hilarious. 3. Mae Young giving birth to a hand was disgusting. But, we got humor out of Mae and she made Mark Henry's Sexual Chocolate character extend a little. 4. Torri as a wrestler was ok, but as a character, brought nothing to the table until she was turned heel and put in Millennium DX. 5. Al Snow, constantly buried by himself, and Mick Foley in 99 and 00. But people responded to Pepper being fed to him by Bossman. Even the Headcheese tag team with Blackman. 6. 2 Cool was a very over tag team despite only Edge/ Christian, Dudleys, and Hardys getting the actual tag title runs. Same deal with T&A. 7. Radicalz were an over heel stable during their debut despite not meeting the typical height/weight look Vince preferred. 8. Despite the height and personality mismatch, the Chyna/Eddie G pairing was a hit. 9. The 24/7 concept being added to the Hardcore title was dumb. But it led to more people getting TV time. Crash and Blackman made it interesting.

With the benefit of hindsight you can see why Jericho left WWE and signed with AEW. Sure, he'd been a big star in WWE, but he'd had to scratch and claw to get there and had never _really_ gotten the treatment his talent deserved, always being a "B-tier" star even when he was a main eventer. AEW was his chance to be THE guy, the inaugural champion, regularly the top heel, yet also in a position to do for the younger stars what he thinks needs to be done in a properly functioning wrestling company by knowing when to put them over.

HHH was already screwed a month prior at KOTR, losing the world title in a tag match that he wasn't even pinned in. He needed a big win at Fully Loaded to keep him strong because that booking was dumb. He was going to protect Kurt and eat the pin at Summerslam instead of him vs Rock anyway. Putting Benoit in the Fully Loaded main event vs Rock when he was eliminated in the KOTR...(was it in quarter finals?) seemed like a headscratcher. In 99, they had heel Billy Gunn win. Seemed like Y2J, a babyface would've been the natural alternate this year, instead of heel Kurt. Kurt was RUNNING through people in 2000. He took the European title from Val. Took the IC from Jericho a couple weeks later. Despite losing both at WM, he still beat Y2J in the KOTR tournament, Rikishi, a hot Hardys tag team (with Edge and Christian), HHH, Rock, Undertaker, and Austin.

Everyone forgets that though, and the HHHater's think he should have lost to everyone. And if he did then he'd have only ever been a midcarder.
@Speedyreedy1218
@Speedyreedy1218 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The HHHaters bitch that he "buries." Everyone they complain he buried, he's actually lost to multiple times or put over, making them look favorable over him in numerous situations. Here's just a couple of examples. They crap on him beating Kurt at Unforgiven. But forgot: 1. The night after KOTR, in a triple threat contender's match on Raw vs Kurt and Rock, he ate the pin to protect Kurt. 2. He did it again at Summerslam. AND let Kurt hit him with his sledgehammer that night. Which is a major deal! That's like Undertaker letting his opponent touch and use the urn on him. Kurt was the first HHH let hit him with it. He let Jericho do it next in 02, then Goldberg in 03, and Orton in 04. 3. He let Kurt kiss his wife twice (Y2J already did), and get a 2nd sledgehammer attack on him, the Smackdown before Unforgiven. Then a week after Unforgiven, he put Kurt over again for the #1 contendership at No Mercy. 4. People complain about him winning at Fully Loaded and Unforgiven but fail to realize he had the hottest angles in 2000, especially in the summer. I take nothing away from Rock's popularity as an individual babyface. But no one cares greatly about his WWF title feuds when it's against anyone else besides HHH. 5. While Rock was frolicking around with Benoit, Undertaker, and Kane for months, there was no steam behind it. There was plenty of interest in HHH/Jericho/Stephanie and HHH/Angle/Stephanie. Fully Loaded was promoted as "a Triple main event" with Benoit/Rock, Angle/Undertaker, and HHH/Jericho. It wouldn't be advertised that way if Rock could make people care about his program with Benoit. Unforgiven was promoted as "the most emotionally charged PPV in WWF history." Though the fatal four way with Benoit, Kane, Rock, and Undertaker was the last match, Angle/HHH was the featured match. HHH and Kurt were on fire the whole summer so they continued it through the fall. They stamped it with Stephanie being the cause of her husband losing the #1 contendership. And that same Stephanie at No Mercy caused her friend to win the championship her husband never rightfully lost in the first place. 6. For Benoit, before HHH beat him at No Mercy: A. HHH lost a tag match with Rock vs Angle and Benoit. B. HHH lost another tag match with Y2J vs Benoit and XPac. That's big. Not only did HHH lose again, but his enemy put salt in the wound having HHH go against and lose to one of his best friends. C. Benoit headbutted his wife. D. Benoit cost him the #1 contendership that was eventually won by Angle. E. Benoit busted him open. F. Benoit got him in the crossface after matches were over multiple times. Yet, the HHHATERS act like HHH mindlessly beats people like drums and always looks strong at all times. That's not true at all. It's BS every time they accuse him of it. 🎮⚒️🧠💀👑

While I agree and wanted Chris Jericho to win I understand why HHH won as they needed a heel to win one of those three matches that night and it was too early for Benoit to win the title off the rock or for Kurt Angle to beat undertaker as undertaker had just came back.
@Speedyreedy1218
@Speedyreedy1218 2 жыл бұрын
Babyface Jericho winning the LMS would be predictable. Something they didn't want to do. That's not fresh. Companies stay in business that evolve. Jericho himself complained that he wanted out of WCW because of the sameness of it. Plus HHH gave him PLENTY of momentum, to get the upperhand on him in numerous things; allowing Y2J to thwart of HHH'S gimmick of being the most calculating man in the business. HHH had Jericho: 1. Constantly badmouth his wife. 2. Talk him into defending his title because he badmouthed him. That's huge. Because HHH'S character is known for controlling his emotions and having no conscience. Letting Jericho "crack him" so to speak is a big deal and HHH'S way of putting him over. 3. Get a pop faux title victory on Raw. 4. Kiss his wife at KOTR. 5. Set up a revolt, gathering the Dudleys, Kane, Rikishi, and II Cool to take down the McMahon-Helmsley Regime. 6. Screw him out of the #1 contender's spot following KOTR. 7. Screw him out of winning the IC title. 8. Insulting his intelligence, mocking HHH'S failed plan of having Stephanie "admit" her crush for Y2J to set up a DX beatdown. 9. Even after the victory, and HHH put him over in a promo, the next night, still have Y2J disrespectfully invade his locker room and attack him. 10. They continued to have several matches afterwards too. I just watched one from September 2000, where Foley had him be his "mystery opponent." Y2J won via DQ when HHH left the ring to confront Kurt taking Stephanie. XPac runs in and inteferes.

@@rocky5000100 I don't understand what the deal was with Benoit. Why put him in a title match with Rock in July, then take him out in August to be in IC contention with Guerrero, Val, Y2J? They then Put HHH and Kurt in with Rock for the title at Summerslam, then come back and insert Benoit in the title match at Unforgiven in September. Why, the need for a gap? If Vince was going to continue HHH/Trish/Test/Stephanie/Kurt feud going into the spring of 2001 anyway, nothing was wrong letting Rock fight Benoit both at Fully Loaded in July, and again in August for Summerslam. Benoit was a good worker, but I suppose it wasn't garnering interest. The pop HHH generated out of the crowd for Rock was night and day in comparison to the one Rock got when squaring against Benoit. As I'm binge watching this time period of spring-summer 2000, pausing and reading crowd signs, I noticed some things. I was surprised to see a few "Die Rocky Die, Rocky Sux, Rocky Still Sucks, HHH is the tru Great One, HHH Federation, The Rock's Cooking Sucks," signs. At Summerslam, towards the ramp, a person had a green posterboard with a cartoon image of Rock in the center. The black text around it said, 'HHH, please pedigree here.' And these weren't just smark cities like DC, Chicago, or LA either. The point I'm making is the crowd was super engaged with that pairing in 2000 more than any other.

@@kamfisher1714 Always was in my opinion. Most people didn't take Jericho seriously until his 2008 run. It's a formula that's worked in many wrestling eras. Change the character and it'll either make you huge (Blueblood HHH becoming The Game, Maivia becoming The Rock, Rocker Michaels becoming HBK, The Ringmaster becoming Stone Cold), or if you were already huge, but been stagnant awhile, revive your career (Hulk Hogan becoming Hollywood nwo Hulk Hogan). Goofy, wannabe Rock star, loud, joke-cracking, too much mousse in his hair 99-05 Y2J wasn't a main eventer. Suit wearing, diction spewing, hypocrite-exposing, Chris Jericho was.

me too felt a little sour when hhh won. y2j was in such a limbo up until late 2001. he litterally became the guy that worked with the top names, but coudnt win. like they based him and the rocks feud off in late 2001 but then he finally won. imo it was overdue. i feel more annoyed, like y2j, when stone cold faced y2j and benoit. that was anticlimactic and stupid at the same time.

I do know I binge watched 1994-2009 WWE during the pandemic and pointed out several losses HHH took to Jericho, Kurt, RVD, and Booker between 2000-2002 (Kurt) and 2000-2002 & 2008-9 (Jericho) that time. 2002-2003 (RVD & Booker).

HBK would later apologize and even told Vince in 2000s that he didn’t want to be champion and just wanted steal the show. JBL 2004 run save his career so I don’t mind that he buried some people. But Triple H 2003 reign of terror definitely shows you how obsessed he was with being champion.

@@nickdonalds3990 As much HBK was a prick before his comeback. I still respected his reputation in the business more than Triple H. Because he started from the ground up. He had wrestled so many greats including guys like Gene Kiniski and Billy Robertson who were real shooters since he had started his career. JBL, before he started in WWE, he had wrestled in Japan, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. So he really earned that spot more than Triple H.
