Being a huge fan of Noah Sebastian and Bad Omens since this last album came out, I wanted to see how his vocals stacked up live over one of their most popular and catchy songs... It's also an incredibly challenging song to sing due to the consistency high range he uses on the chorus and how he approaches breakup and grit in strategic parts of the melody!
We work through a live performance of Just Pretend and discuss mixed voice, distortion and vocal stamina for creating fantastic live performances of your own!

Noah is on another level. I’ve seen Bad Omens live multiple times and dozens of interviews with Noah. He’s so reserved and soft spoken in his speaking but dude becomes unhinged live and puts so much emotion and power in his vocals.

Noah is arguably the most best vocalist when he is live and just in general, he sounds exactly like the records live, and the fact he is constantly changing resonates live just shows how much of a pro he is, a lot of vocalists when they are live are often flat or they strain a lot but he is just on another level!!!

Noah did a live tribute song for his friend Keaton, it was a Nashville show, and the song was called “Sympathy” which was Keatons song from Too Close to Touch. That to me was a chilling performance Noah did.

It’s amazing how far he’s come as a vocalist, even just from this live performance you’re reacting to… to newer and more recent live performances. Just gets better and better.

Also! I’ve noticed in newer live performances, Noah doesn’t do the overly exaggerated “I can” coming into the chorus.. it’s a lot softer now which in my opinion sounds really beautiful. For reference, check out their performance of just pretend from their live stream they did in New York in November.

I think the pitch correction is meant to create that eerie slick feeling his voice has-it makes the reverb watery and synth-like. I think it works really well from a sound design perspective.

At 4:57 It is actually Noah's head and chest voice together. I don't think it is mixed because you can hear the distintive low sound with the higher note laid over it. Pitching the low note up and softening the low and high sound. I found recently there is a line you can draw across the two. And by moving it up and down you can create complex mixed sounds. Brian Johnston has this feature about his voice making him difficult to emulate.

It might just be me, but I've noticed while watching a lot of Bad Omens live footage that Noah seems to only use pitch correcting during parts of the song where there were similar-sounding kind of robotic/vox radio effects used on the album. So I believe - and I may be totally off the mark here - that the autotune is more being used for the slightly mechanical byproduct sound than anything else.

I’m glad you mentioned the pitch correction, I absolutely fell in love with the album and theres no denying Noah is a great singer but it bothered me how heavily it was used when I went to watch them live. It was constant, and due to the more subtle usage of it, I’m guessing they are trying to use it as an aid as opposed to an ‘aesthetic’, it also bothers me how few people seem to be able to tell. This is a stab in the dark but I think he’s using something like melodyne as opposed to auto tune, and has the melody written with midi. Thats what it sounded like when I watched them at least, in this video it sounds like autotune because of that fast fluctuation, I dunno it took a lot of awe away from him as a singer personally, I discovered him on this channel thanks to your last analysis but i dont think its good to idolize singers who ‘cheat’ like that both on the records and live, it’s a bit more than ‘studio magic’ I noticed in the records the usage of the post Malone-Esque digital vibrato, which is cool, I just wish he didn’t use it always

I’ve seen Bad Omens live and Noah sounds just as amazing live as he does on the records! You can tell based on his live vocals that he uses minimal (if any) autotune in the studio

Pitch correction kind of reminds me of lane assist when driving. It’s there to help you, but I feel like it’s always pulling me to one side or another even though I’m still maintaining the lane. In a way it seems to take away from some of the natural nuances of his voice. However, the band themselves sort of lean towards a more electronic feel, so in that frame I think it definitely works. Plus, if he wasn’t even close to the notes, the minor correction would be useless, so he is definitely singing his ass off.
@quwane
@quwane Жыл бұрын
imo i think he uses a bit his larynx to "reach" those notes but its somehow controlled so it doesnt hurt his voice though idk if its possible to not hurt your voice like that. idk to me it just really sounds that he uses the larynx a bit. interesting and beautiful as always, love it

I think the pitch correction in that passage is a necessary pre-processing step for the vocoder. Those can do some funky "jazz" harmonizations if the pitch tracking sees you're straying from the programmed key.
