Thank you Chris!! I'm completely shocked that you were able to track this down. It was a fantastic Christmas miracle. You're one heck of a tractor detective, just incredible. To be honest, I had somewhat resigned myself to the notion that we would never be able to track any of the information down and would never be able to figure out the serial number. It's cool enough to have this tractor (even if it may have been a Frankenstein project from the past), but to now know a bit more about its history and how it was built just adds that much more to how much I'll enjoy using it in the future. Again, thank you so much Chris for this amazing gift.

Very interesting video. My grandfather farmed with a large 4x4 Oliver on his dairy farm in St. Albans VT. He most likely bought it from Fournier's in Swanton as he is only a few miles south of that dealer. I am not sure what model it was because I was very young. It would be a crazy coincidence if this was the same tractor. He traded it in when he retired for a 4x4 JD 2355 with a loader in the early to mid 90's.

When I was at the University of New Hampshire in the 1980s the mechanical and hydraulic front wheel assists were a new thought for a farm boy from the mid Atlantic. I soon figured out that the season there of winter mud summer mud repeat meant planting and chopping silage in mud. A neighboring farm had one of those big Oliver's and the front wheel drives of other colors were all through, Maine, NH, VT, and northern NY. I worked through school at the school farms and ran one of those JD 4430 hydraulic assist units much to my chagrin coming from Oliver n IH heritage.

We had a 2150 4 wheel drive on the farm i work on in up state NY.. We lived across Lake Champlain from Vermont. Last time I was back home, the farm was no longer there. The only tractor I seen park in the field by its self was the old ford 9000 we had. Everything else was gone. The 2 Oliver's the barns. Even the bosses old farmhouse. It was kinda sad. I spent many summers working there. All was gone except the Ford. Knowing that tractor it probably still runs. I believe it survived because it a had a log spliter mounted on the 3 point to split wood, and it was still attached to it. I spent a few winters behind it, splitting firewood.. Its a small world you never know. I plowed many fields with that 2150

While you were talking about gear ratios it reminded me in CH Wendell's book Nebraska Tractor Tests Since 1920 concerning test 872 Oliver 1950 4 wheel drive. The repairs and adjustments section states "During the drawbar runs it became apparent that the gear ratio in the front axle was not correct for this tractor. Another front axle with more suitable gear ratio was installed and test continued."

Hey Chris, I have to believe in coincidence's! I was just talking to George about this the other day and here you do a video about it! He could add some more information to your story of how these tractors came to show up at your place. He remembers picking up what now is Phils tractor, in upstate NY I believe near the Vermont border like you said. The other one came from down state NY. So I believe Blane swnt the 2150 you guys restored went to Aumans auction I believe? It was bought by a collecter here in WNY and brought back to NY as luck would have it. That is a very interesting story about these tractors and how you found out the serial number for Phil. This new information is really cool and I am glad there are guys out there willing to take the time to go thru all this information and help us out know more about our tractors.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 18 күн бұрын
If it weren't for Blane's connection to George, I wouldn't have known to get ahold of him about the 1600 fwa. I doubt I would have landed that one without George's help. It's a little over an hour drive down to Yoder and Frey, so we hauled them to my place in 2 trips. As you already know, they almost went through the auction! I think Blane was sweating. 😆 🤣 😂

Great video and awesome detective work! It’s pretty cool to know the stories of how they came to be where they are now. I’ve got a 1655 MFWD that I believe came down out of Montreal, Québec and a 1950 MFWD that was sold as an industrial with pto, hydraulics, three point, and I believe it had terra tires originally (I have the original fronts with it) unless I’m mistaken but the build card has a lot of unknown codes marked on it. This video made me realize that this one was changed after it rolled of the line like you found out with the 2150. Cool stuff! Thanks for the video!
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 18 күн бұрын
Check your G code for your 1950. 60x43x25 terra tires was G80. We've been finding there were quite a few tractors shipped with terra tire fronts and regular ag rears.
@geoffb.8925
@geoffb.8925 18 күн бұрын
The g code is g099 and isn't listed on the code print out provided with the build card. But there is a pen mark right next to the g080 option that is pretty deliberate. The same situation is found on the k code for the front. It's coded k099 but has a mark next to the k036 code. On one of my other build cards I found that the 099 code represented a special build of materials. Is that correct?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 18 күн бұрын
@geoffb.8925 per special build is correct. I wonder if they shipped it with 2 sets of wheels. I've never seen one like that, and the card reader won't pick up those hand written notes. The fact it still has the terra fronts with a note of the terra codes would make me think it had them on there. What's the serial number of your tractor? I might have to look into that further when we get to the 1950s.
@geoffb.8925
@geoffb.8925 18 күн бұрын
@ThatOliverGuyChris Sorry if there are multiple responses here. Either my internet or KZbin itself is being difficult. The pen marks aren't on the actual build card themselves as far as I can tell. But they are on the print out with all known codes provided by the museum. Edit: I figured out that KZbin wasn't allowing my reply through because they think the serial number is a phone number....

I was waiting for you to say "My dear Watson, it is quite elemental" in this wonderful video. I had to deliver the last 2150 we had on the floor back to the Peoria Warehouse. They told me that it was going to the president of Vietnam. They could have been pulling my leg but knowing how Uncle Sam was trying to influence leaders of other countries I believe that was entirely possible. I hauled it on our 2 axle Chevy Low cab forward and was definitely overweight on axles. Due to my previous sad experience of where the weigh stations were, I knew the no-weigh-stations route to cross the Illinois River just north of the Peoria Oliver warehouse and back to the interstate. Here is a story I like to tell. It was the same route we took when my wife and I delivered a Snorkel Fire Truck to Coal City FD at the Quad Cities Airport. The airport had sent a crew down to get the truck from a company that rebuilt Government equipment for distribution by the government. This truck had not been worked yet so when the crew got there they were told to get it off the rebuilder's lot (they were upset as they wanted the local FD to get it). So we got the call to drag it out and up the street to our dealership. We helped the crew get the gas engine working so they could drive it. One problem that was not easily fixable was that the hydraulic clutch leaked off when you pushed the clutch in. The guy who was going to drive it knew that problem but when he put it into low gear the clutch self-released. It was not a problem except that he forgot to release the airbrakes which twisted the driveshaft into multiple pieces. Their boss did not want to pay for his crew to spend multiple days in a motel while the driveshaft was being rebuilt so they returned home. So we got the job of fixing the driveshaft and delivering the truck to Quad Cities airport. We got $3.00 a mile for the truck and $1.50 a mile for the 2-day round trip for the escort vehicle which was my wife driving our personal car. We had friends halfway that we spent the night at which was on a U.S. Air Force base. That is another story of its own. The dealership owner thought he should get some of the money we collected for using our personal car even though he got the same amount for delivering the fire truck plus the time and parts, batteries and etc items. used in getting it running. I let him deduct my wages for the 2-days I was absent from the dealership. Knowing the firetruck was overweight I went north to Champaign, IL, then from Bloomington, IL to El Paso, IL, west through Washington, IL, onto Peoria, IL, and then to the interstate on the other side of Peoria, which went to the Quad Cities. Now comes the fun part of the whole trip. When we got to the east edge of Washington, IL, a cop saw us and OH OH we were in trouble. Instead, he waved for us to follow him and turned his rotating lights and siren on. I turned the trucks on and he escorted us through Washington. I would have loved to have seen his face when he pulled off on the west edge of Washington and saw the name on the snorkel boom "Job Corps, Poland Springs, Maine."

It's great they figured out a way to access the information that Oliver used back then. I look forward to this because it might shed some light on my 1550 Utility because the museum told me my 1550 Utility diesel is the only one that had no branch delivery on the build card and was marked "Short Hood" and has a factor patched hood on it and the old style swept back axel under it and Cockshutt red paint under the green paint on the fenders. @@ThatOliverGuyChris Sounds like a plan to me ! I'm still wondering with all the odd things about this 1550 if it is that 5th Cockshutt 1550 utility they have no idea what happened to because of what Mr Shaffer said about it when I met him and Sherry at that in Wilmington Ohio years ago. He got excited when he looked at my build card and copied it to research it more and asked me a lot of questions about it and I told him what I knew about it and as far as I know I'm the 3rd owner of it. Funny thing is I stacked hay behind this tractor in 1972 and he had had this tractor for several years at that point and when I saw it for sale it was when I realized it was a utility and had to buy it ! LOL With only 550 built and 1 of 138 as a diesel (as I was told) with a factory patched hood red fenders and an old style front end it makes you wonder if it could be something special. Bandit

Happy New Year Chris. I noticed it looked like parts of the hood and side panels are preferrated. Is that correct? Was that for more airflow....cooling? Did the higher horse cat engine models have those also? I don't think I've ever seen those on any other models.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 18 күн бұрын
Yes they are perforated. The factory panels were solid, and you're right, they were having trouble getting rid of the heat. They swapped the solid panels for perforated. I have seen 1 solid panel in all my travels. The 2255 had the side panels that puckered out to make room for the Cat v8. The front of those panels were perforated. It's not as obvious as the 2050/2150.

The Oliver sleuth scores again! Congrats! Will have to look thru old sales contracts to see if I can find mine. Pretty sure it was 68, Remb 421 prefix. Had the continental cab like the one you wrecked with fender tanks. Kept the rain and snow off but if over50 degrees you couldn’t open enough windows! Handled the 830 well and never ran out of power on 6-16s, slippage was a different story, in furrow w/ on land dual. Traded for one of the first AC7060 PS with maroon belly and 7btm DMI w/White bottoms, pulled mostly at 16 to 18 in, but had a couple fields of clay hills that had it narrowed clear up 13 or 14 in. Heard the 2150 went off toward Warsaw IN and a year later blew up, think it was about 3000hr when I traded it. Happy new year and Go Green, did the swear jar but basketball or hockey tickets?

It bought hockey. They beat Wisconsin last night in overtime. That was at Wrigley field, abd we didn't go. But we did get to watch them pull off a win against the Badgers Thursday night at MSU! That place is really dipping into my tractor fund. Lol

I Bet! Watched most of the 4 games in Wrigley on BigTen network, did fall asleep before the end of Wisc., looks like a good team worthy of the ranking. Talked to MSU AD at intermission, he said student section season tickets sold out in under 5 min. Great to see Izzo there supporting hockey. The outdoor night match at 15 degrees in a place like Wrigley would sure be a lifetime memory for all and defending a No 1 ranking. Good luck rest of the way, at.least beat Mich and ND!

I was most excited you posted a dealer map link, thought maybe I could find who sold Oliver near me, but the map shows nobody close to me. There had to be one somewhere close as there was a few Oliver Superior Drills, and a tractor here and there from the period, but nobody local atleast that is still alive knows who sold them, so they must have not lasted very long. Nearest one on the map is acouple counties away, I know in that period people where I am were dealing somewhere alot closer than that.

So would the factory have replaced the first serial number tag with one for corrected front end equipment or do you think they would have left original tag on it?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 18 күн бұрын
We've been wondering that. I've seen both ways. The ones that weren't updated were used by the experimental department. The ones that I have seen that were updated by production have had the plates updated or replaced. I know of another 2150 that was built as a 2 wheel drive and was changed at the factory, I'll have to check it out.

Great story Chris. That is some good detective work. I have talked with Derek Huhn several times. He says they can run 300 cards a minute through the reader. Also, I know where he can get a new serial number plate. Lol.

Hi Chris, interesting video. Curious about the 099 no spin front differential. I take it that is an option. Was this a clutch disk kind of a posi? Was it full time? Rare?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 18 күн бұрын
We didn't open this one up, but I think it's like a Detroit locker. Either front wheel can turn faster than the differential, but neither can turn slower. It was an option, and I have seen it on a few tractors now, but I'd stil call it rare.

Why does 1 have planetary finals,and 1does not?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 13 күн бұрын
Do you mean the rear axles? All of the 2 wheel drives had planetary final drives to handle the higher horsepower of the Hercules. Four wheel drive spread that load out between the front and rear axles, so adjustable rear axles were regular equipment. The 2150 could be ordered as an Extra Heavy Duty version that was 4 wheel drive with the rear planetary final drives.
