Here's a fun fact: when the steep decrease in Transformers popularity when 1990 came around, Takara had a lot of concepts for new toys, but they were hesitant to sell them out of fear of them underperforming in the market. Because of this, Takara went ahead and made an entirely new series outright. This series, known simply as the Brave (or Yūsha, in Japan) Series, started with the anime "Brave Exkaiser." Exkaiser was a huge success in Japan, prompting Takara to make more installments in the Brave series, all leading up to one of the most popular mecha anime of all time, King of Braves: GaoGaiGar. Nobody asked me for this history lesson, but I felt like sharing it cuz I think it's pretty cool.

The good about Japanese continuity is humans. In season 3, humans studied space exploration in Cybertron. They even have a human space pirate. In Headmasters, humans began traveling in space and establish colonies. In Victory, humans have multiple space colonies and joined the Autobots to fight the Decepticons. One human space colony was destroyed in episode 1 and Star Saber adopt the last human kid from the said colony. In Zone, both humans and Autobots pushed the Decepticons back. Consistency.

G1 Star Saber>IDW Star Saber
@muhaoai46935 жыл бұрын
I have to admit that IDW's Star Saber was a big part of why I eventually just stopped buying their comics. I mean, Lost Light was undoubtedly an enjoyable series overall, but I couldn't help feeling bitter than James Roberts basically took the Star Saber from his fanfic and made it official. Part of it was out of fear that since IDW's stuff influenced quite a few of the toys (e.g. Chromedome in Titans Returns having mnemnosurgery skills), the next time Star Saber appears in toy or animated form he might be based on the monstrous IDW version instead of the heroic G1 version. Sure enough, while his Masterpiece toy is based on his G1 design (and his profile in Japan is his G1 self), the one released in Australia was based on his IDW version. Plus, during the Power of the Primes vote for the new Matrix bearer, his bio clearly references the IDW Star Saber's intolerance. He tried to be a good dad over in Victory, you know? Why is that never played with?

it's like watching divergent evolution. Over here in America G1 styles remain near and dear to everyone's hearts and no one could replace Optimus Prime. Yet, in Japan the story continued onward and upward, farther and farther, changing and shifting with each new idea from the writers to the point that it was hardly even recognizable as Transformers anymore. It'd become it's own, entirely new and different species in a way.

One thing I can appreciate about the G1 animes is how the cast is ever shifting. I think it takes more advantage of the franchise's vast world and cast more than just sticking to the fight between Optimus Prime and Megatron. It's that ability to move passed the G1 cast that we really haven't seen since the end of the Beast era really. Not that I have a problem with seeing new spins on the G1 cast, I love seeing all the ways those characters can be reinterpreted, but something about this type of world progression that impresses me. It kinda reminds me of the Star Wars expanded universe or different eras/variations on Mega Man.

Meanwhile, my understanding on "Zone" is that it was ORIGINALLY slated as a series instead of an OVA, but the "fatigue" factor kicked in, hence forth the latter was issued instead.
@KodyCrimson5 жыл бұрын
That feeling when you realize just how much effort has been put into the Japanese version of the original cartoon compared to English and how they're able to tie 30+ years of content together so well. I remember watching all of Headmasters myself a few years ago, while I didn't particularly like much of the cartoon, I thought their take on Sixshot was just so awesome, he was a kick butt and deadly ninja warrior and a Decepticon who actually had a soft side. I wish Hasbro would make a new series with that version of Six-Shot in it, because that version is easily one of the most interesting Transformers characters.

You do us a service pal, I am grateful. I know theirs only so much material out there but as long as you keep pumping these videos out I will always watch them. It's hard to pinpoint the magic... was it all random decisions my guys in suits,... Budiansky? ... I guess. I remember as a small child sitting in the back seat of my dads car looking out and seeing these things.... jets, and semi trucks and Volkswagens. The mind stirred... I shifted and squirmed all day waiting to see theses REAL tangible objects turn into alien robots with human like soles go on adventures. LoL It's the best kind of Science Fiction. and still today that kid says "cool!" LoL Anyway, Thanks :)

I'm on the 3rd disk of Japanese Headmasters, and what a treat it is to see my favorite toys as a kid get their time on the screen! I'll be getting the the other Japanese series as well!

Interesting how transformers was a perfect coming together of a long history between the American hasbro and Japanese takara, only for them to each take it their own unique direction again

The japanese series were broadcasted in Mexico, imagine my frustration when I was seeking a star saber figure

Fun fact. While the original dub of the cartoon series was in English, Hasbro commissioned Toei Animation of Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon fame to animate the series.

The absolute best thing about the Japanese series is the end credits of victory where the song asks if star saber ever wet the bed.

Hearing about how Japan continued the original series I can't help but think about the what ifs of if Hasbro kept the show going like Japan did.

I've recently binged The Basics and one name I've been hearing a lot is Scorponok. would be neat to see an episode on him.

Chris, if Shout Factory would release the Japanese Beast Wars exclusives and Car Robots/Robots in Disguise series it would be the Transformers taking full circle for the characters.

The basics has been an amazing series. Do you have any plans to revisit subjects you've already covered with updates? For example, the IDW comics now that the story has come to a close? Keep up the excellent work, sir.

I recommend everyone listen to the Japanese Transformers theme songs, they're an absolute treat.

Half the time, when I’m unsatisfied by Hasbro’s justifications for weird gimmicks, I just replace it with the Japanese equivalents as the proper headcanon. Like the Headmasters toyline
