I absolutely love that -- because IDW 2019's "Storm Horizon" was written with very over-the-top, Silver Age-y dialogue -- when Magnus was brought back in the main series he still had that sort of dialogue even though nobody else did. Just canonically a very hammy guy.

It was the IDW and Aligned versions of Ultra Magnus that really made me fall in love with the character, but I still have a sodt spot for the Robots in Disguise and the Animated versions, since the former was my first Magnus and the latter was the one from the time I got back into Transformers.

Happy 250th episode, Chris! Of the 86 movie's cast, Ultra Magnus has always been my favorite. He's too humble to admit to not being worthy of the Matrix, but rather than complain, he did his best, to the point of sacrificing himself to protect his teammates. And when he was brought back by the Junkions, rather than blame himself for losing the Matrix to Galvatron or be resentful (like his RiD version would), he only cared about seeing the others safe, which spoke volumes. And when Hot Rod became Rodimus Prime, not only was Magnus his second-in-command; he, along with Kup, helped the new Prime adjust to his new life as leader of the Autobots. Simply put, not only is the G1 cartoon Ultra Magnus my favorite character from the film and my second favorite Autobot after Jetfire; he is one of my personal heroes, also, due to his bravery, humbleness, nobility, and selflessness.

Even David Kaye which at the time of airing I had no idea was Optimus which surprised me because I knew him as Megatron from the Unicron trilogy and later adding the beast era when I finally watched those. David, Susan, John Moschitta all were brought back and still did an excellent job all these years later. Shows that at least for Susan and John they never forgot their time as Arcee and Blurr.

I was hoping Ultra Magnus would be the leader of the High Guard faction (the Wreckers to be exact) that continued to believe in the Primes while Starscream leads his faction that favored "the strength of one bot over another". While they have a teeth-clenched teamwork to fight against Sentinel's regime for 50 cycles as a common enemy. And when Orion Pax ascended into Optimus Prime with the Matrix of Leadership, Ultra Magnus and his faction would side with him, finally validating their faith at last and joined the Autobots. Contrasting Starscream, Shockwave and Soundwave and their forces remain loyal to D-16, now Megatron, and become the Decepticons. Then Ultra Magnus would form the Elite Guard where he and his comrades train former Cogless miners, who can transform now, to fight for their freedom and autonomy and prepare them for the coming battles against the Quintessons and the Decepticons.

If we get a sequel, I can see that being where Ultra Magnus shows up. It would be interesting to see him as the ruler of another city on Cybertron, some kinda... City Commander. He could get dragged into the conflict when news gets out about Optimus's ascension as a Prime and Megatron co-opting the Elite Guard into his new Decepticon army. You could put another Decepticon bruiser like Skorponok or Straxus against him for an absolute demolition derby in the third act.

As I grew older, I realized that Magnus was my favorite Transformer, so much so that I bought Magic Square's Star Commander because I loved the idea that he's actually a white Optimus covered in what is basically a Gundam Heavy Weapons System. The original Magnus never gave up, even in the face of certain defeat. I think we could all use some Ultra Magnus in our lives.

The classic battles between Ultra Magnus and Galvatron in the UK comics will always be my ultimate memories of the character. Which makes me think - I would love to see The Basics on UK artist Geoff Senior. He was without a doubt the most loved of all the Transformers comics artists and created so many of the most iconic artwork. My best friend and I would get so excited when that week's comic arrived and it was a Geoff Senior issue! He helped create the look of iconic characters like Death's Head and his cover image of Magnus and Galvatron's battle is referenced so often. As a wannabe comic artist in my youth he was a hero of mine.

It’s genuinely insane that Magnus wasn’t included in Transformers One. Imagine if he appeared as “Dion Magnus” in the mines as a friend of Orion Pax and D-16. Instead of saving Jazz from the collapsing mine, it’s “Dion Magnus” who gets saved. When the upgraded Orion returns to give his version of the “Rise Up” speech, imagine if it was “Dion Magnus” that greets Orion, and there’s a comment about how he’s a different color now (going from yellow & blue to blue & red), to which he replies that he got a new paint job “after his injuries were repaired”. At the end of the film, the “camera” specifically focuses on Ironhide’s upgrade before briefly showing us Swideswipe, Arcee, and Wheeljack’s upgrades finishing. Imagine if Ironhide’s upgrade had been shorter, like the others, and it was “Dion Magnus” who had gotten the focus, effectively completing the “arc”. I want to stress, I am, by no means, a massive Ultra Magnus fangirl. I think he’s cool, but I also can appreciate a good through line. So not adding U.M. into Transformers One feels like such wasted potential

I have a real real fondness for Ultra Magnus from the UK Marvel Transformers comics. Especially when I bought the reissues by Titan in graphic novel format. Seeing Ultra Magnus go from leading the Wreckers in City Of Fear. To him ending up on Earth after being transported there by spacebridge. Then his encounter with Galvatron, where you think he has perished. In a volcanic explosion. Only to see him dig his way out. That is some story telling for the character.

Robots in Disguise did so many things right. I loved the idea of making Ultra Magnus Optimus' brother. I also thought Nemesis Prime/Scourge could be the third brother. It would be a fun exploration to have Prime being the noble, selfless point of view, Magnus being the might makes right/greater good zealot type, and Scourge being the manipulative nihilist.

My favorite version of Ultra Magnus is from the original IDW run. Something about the by-the-book lawman interacting with more freewheeling characters like Rodimus, Whirl, and especially human character Verity Carlo just worked for me. That and the reveal of Minimus Ambus and the legacy of Ultra Magnus as an identity assumed by Autobots to keep the mystique of the undefeated lawman definitely was pulled off well. I feel that the Transformers Prime version of the character was way too stiff compared to the IDW version. While he interacted with Jack, Miko, and Rafael, he should have acquired a human supporting cast member of his own the way the IDW version bonded with Verity.

I heard a theory where UM shouldn't have existed, that he was originally intended to be a powered-up version of Optimus. His and Galvatron's toys are similarly sized and have the same function of City Commander. His role as "advisor" in the 3rd season was already filled by Kup, though it could be said Kup was more of a "grandfather" figure than advisor. He was also one of the last Diaclone figures available.

I love DREAMWAVE's version where Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime were actual brothers that shared the same bot form. One thing that was not mentioned here was that Ultra Magnus' Prime design in Japan was that instead of a separate character, Powered Convoy is supposed to have been a resurrected Optimus Prime, in a "Saint Mode" that would had been known as Saint Convoy (Hence the color white, a typical color for Japanese resurrected characters having the "Saint" title on their names) and then Powered Convoy when he merged with his armor. But to me, the idea that Magnus and Optimus were brothers was so much better and in a way would be cool that they could share the Matrix of Leadership.

SG Magnus from idw has to be the most weird version of ultra magnus. He transfered himself into optimus's body while leaving prime in his but because its ratchet prime was left in magnus's body damaged with his vocalizer turned off.

It's worth mentioning the Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus was redecoed into Legends Ultra Magnus with Minimus Ambus replaced with Alpha Trion and a pack-in manga taking place in the same continuity as the G1 cartoon explaining that Trion's spirit helped revive Magnus. That's the revival you mentioned earlier in the video.

I do apologize for the tardiness of this comment, but I was extremely busy at work and didn't have the time to check out this awesome updated video on Ultra Magnus, until now. Anyways, I just wanted to say that this video was absolutely amazing and I really enjoyed the information that came out of it dealing with this character. In addition to that I just wanted to say that my favorite versions of this character are the following.... 1) Robert Stack's version of Ultra Magnus from the original Transformers Movie 2) Michael Ironside's version of Ultra Magnus from Transformers Prime 3) Transformers: The Animated Series version of Ultra Magnus, just because of the Hammer that he used.

This is a lot of bias, but my favorite interpretation of Magnus is my DM’s in our TTRPG campaign. He’s one of the main NPCs, which is set on post-war Cybertron in our own custom timeline (so we have room to play around with and do stuff differently). I actually had the G1 Ultra Magnus toy as a kid but because I was a kid it was cumbersome for me to transform him all the time. I eventually lost the trailer and played with only the white cab. As a character, I commend Transformers Prime for their ability to draw from most (if. not all) iterations of UM for their version yet not make it seem "janky." His form looked like a mix of G1 and RID. His personality was clearly drawn from the comics and War For Cybertron series (even though I know that hadn't aired yet). He wielded a hammer like his Animated version. And he was brought to "unalivement" again like in the comics and in Headmasters. He's truly a case study on the success of the Aligned project.

My personal favorite depiction will always be the IDW run Ultra Magnus. I feel like it fleshed out his character in a very interesting and fitting way, while also keeping his core personality aspects and values intact. His interactions with Verity Carlo, Rodimus, and even Megatron were always a delight to see. I love Ultra Magnus, he gives the vibe of that orderly guy who had to deal w so much bs so the more it goes on the more he acts very upright and ceremoniously to try main sanity lol, like in some ways he acts more like a old man than gears sometimes xD

Sadly I didn't have time to watch this on release which is a shame because Ultra Magnus is one of my all time favorite characters. The Generation 1 version of him is my favorite. I love how he is knows the rules, can take the heat, but is also strong enough to be kind lighthearted and have fun with the other Autobots. I happen to have a vintage 86 Ultra Magnus toy. He is soo fun to play with even now. In regards to obscure character month I would love to suggest Misfire (and aimless) as well as Nacelle. I know Nacelle has almost nothing about him so maybe a video about all the obscure seekers and their history. Other examples being Ion storm Red Wing (ironically a city near where I live) and Bitstream. Just a suggestion but I do hope one of these two ideas gets turned into a video eventually thank you very much and have a Happy Thanksgiving if you live in America and an amazing week if you don't and even if you do.

11:04 I find that panel kinda funny, because of how slightly askew the Autobot logo is. Mainly because it reminded me of Magnus’s line from the first issue of MTMTE. “You should’ve left ME at the door. 3:17 as a kid I always loved Ultra Magnus in the movie and wondered if when Hot Rod was turned into Rodimus Prime, Magnus was pissed that the Matrix chose a “turbo-revin young punk” to make leader and let him die instead.

I love the Studio Series ‘86 Commander Class & the Combiner Wars toys the most. The SS86 is spot on to his appearance in the 1986 movie and CW version is right out of the comics!

One thing I like about Ultra Magnus in the War For Cybertron trilogy is that he was close friends with not just Optimus Prime, but also Megatron. Not only that but he’s also one of Alpha Trion’s disciples. It made me wish that he played a big role in Transformers One, as he & Optimus are supposed to be longtime friends, so he could’ve joined alongside Orion and D-16 and have his own unique name prior to getting the mantle of Ultra Magnus, as I think the Magnus moniker is just as important throughout Transformers lore as the Primes.

I want a series dedicated to The Wreckers with a focus on Ultra Magnus doing odd operations with autobots during the war. Could bring back Springer, Bulkhead, Wheeljack, maybe even pull in like the Dinobots who want to join because they think it will let them rampage more, and have both teams learn from the other- the Dinobots to maybe tone it down a little, and the Wreckers to be a little less conservative with, well, wrecking.

I've noticed lately that Ultra Magnus is one of my favorite G1 characters, maybe it's because of his similarity to Optimus, but I really liked his design, personality, chemistry with characters, including enemies like Cyclonus, that's why it was a shame when he was blatantly dumped by both American and Japanese creators: in the 1986 movie he was simply destroyed by Galvatron, the same Cyclonus somehow beat him up too badly during their fights, and in the Japanese Headmasters he was stupidly killed by SixShot, it couldn't even be called a fight, it was just a stupid beating, in which Magnus played the role of a punching bag, forgetting about any firearms. Later, Magnus appeared, but I don’t remember any very memorable images in animation, except that there was an interesting variation of him in Animeted, but there he was just a secondary character, I didn’t remember him very much in TF Prime, and the feeling was that he was also dumped there, in the Netflix trilogy he was brought out pretty quickly, yes, there is also Car Robots, but there is essentially not ULTRA Magnus, but GOD Magnus, that is, a different character, and although he was interesting, he can’t be considered a let. And I’m really surprised that a character with such a design does not often appear in main roles, like G1, although the potential is huge.
