Took advantage of the recent rains and got out on the Schuylkill to catch a few nice Flatheads, Captain Kenny also demonstrates how to cut the Flapper for cutbait.

What rod did you catch that first flathead with?
@johnj.bluvas87028 жыл бұрын
What I called the Schuylkill River as a kid growing up in Minersville Penna flowed BLACK as the coal mine washed the coal it produced and dumped the water in the river and it flowed black long after I left Pennsylvania. Learned to swim in it. Today it is but a small creek and flows clean and pure.

What size line and rig did you use with the flapper and size sinker ?
@tracyl43838 жыл бұрын
+Devin Adams If you fish where 40lb+ cats live, you should be using a 2' leader of 40-60lb and a hook 5/0-9/0. Sinker depends on current, land or boat based. On a boat we use 2oz eggs and let them drift and move, but also use 3-8oz for anchor baits depending on current speed. I suggest fixed weights, NOT slide weights. A secret tip is to use a wine cork threaded onto the leader as a "slip float" which will elevate and flap the bait in the current, at the perfect height. We also use a small jingle bell between the cork and the hook and im gonna stop talking now.

Tracy L. explain in better detail your set up you mentioned with cork and bell thing. please and thank you. I have some screen shots and think I know what your doing but please show.

I just started catfishing this year I've caught tons of channel cats but tried for flatheads only about 2 times. both times skunked. I was using live sunnies or just chunks of sunny. fished below the norristown dam in the Schuylkill didn't catch anything is there anything you recommend I could change up to attract more flatheads?
@ChrisMcIntee9 жыл бұрын
+Neil Drummond Youve got the right bait and the right area. Check your spot and make sure the water depth is adequate, look for 5'-10' of water. When did you fish?
@neildrummond57119 жыл бұрын
I went on Thursday night fished from like 5:30 til about 8pm when it was warmer had one bite. probably not deep enough water I think it was only about 3 feet. I'm going to try above the dam where the water is deeper next time.

I dont know what Kenny was using, looked like some older penn conventionals of some sort on some oddball heavy action boat rods haha, I was using a conventional and spinning setup, the conventional was a st croix mojo musky 8' with a penn squall 12, the spinning setup was a shimano baitrunner OC 6000 on a st croix mojo inshore.

Hey nice flathead! I have been watching your videos and i want to catch those monsters too! I was wondering if there are any good spots at pottstown schuyklkill river. What ounces weight do you use?
@ChrisMcIntee9 жыл бұрын
+seil park Thanks man, we usually use 3oz weights, sometimes if the flow is low we'll go to 2oz or if its really ripping we'll go up to 6oz. I dont fish much above black rock but I believe you could catch these in the pottstown area. Might want to try downriver some, towards black rock and even further south.

@SwingmanVendetta8 жыл бұрын
Personally I would not eat anything from the Schuylkill - Check the back of a PA fishing book and it has recommended guides for how often you should eat fish and from what water body (in PA) they came from. It also lists the contaminants.
