Just last night, we here in the west just got a dump of snow similar to what you and Milo experienced in the east. It is nice to see the two "flighters" next to each other; one with the black hood and one with the chrome. I'm not a fan of metal sections, as you know. And, I'm not a fan of hooded nibs either. So, it is amazing to me that I love my WS601 Flighter with the stainless steel hood and the Bobby mini-fude nib so much. I love the way it looks and the weight in the hand. I notice your grip closer to the nib and that would make your grip slip on that section no question. I hold my "flighter" higher up so my thumb is on that clutch ring and it seems to anchor my grip nicely. Go figure! Nice video Chris. Thanks.

My comfortable grip is about an inch from the paper. There where I like the section to be what I like. Milo frolicked all day today in the snow. We have shoveled out the chicken coop. Now it time for a 5:00 beverage.

I just bought the steel section for the 601! so far this year you've forced me to buy 3 pens. I can't stop, won't stop LOL!

Whoa, thanks for the warning. I've been enamored of the WS 601 + Stainless Hood since I first saw it, but I certainly don't need me no slippery sections. I will simply continue to admire its looks in videos like this.

When Milo showed up on the bonus footage: "Good job chrisrap52 or whoever you are" says the wife. About the only time she was interested in a pen video, hahaha :-) Thanks again, love the bonus footage, frankenpenning and 601 appreciation, very timely given the buzz with upcoming P51 relaunch. Stay warm!

Thank you for mentioning me on this great video. I have to say that I like the steel hood and I don't find it slippery. But I usually don't have that kind of problem with metal pens.

I agree on that what You said at the end of video. Watching the reviews on YT and feeling the pen on the paper are a two different things! But...! I'm enjoining those reviews, personal points of view almost in every video that You're posting. From You and from other ones - Waski, OdE, Stephen, Chris, Figboot.... and many, many others! That is a real treasure to have you all in this community! ❤️🖋️

Coincidentally, I ordered a 601 flighter yesterday. I think I will eventually get the metal section, too. Thank you! I enjoy your videos and I am learning a lot.

I'm intrigued to learn that one can do with the 601, what I've started trying to do on a Parker 51. It's a good deal of fun, but aligning the new hood can be a bit more difficult. Sometimes I settle for "second best". One thing I learned the hard way is that I can't make a metal grip section work in the summer months, my hands get sweaty. Glad you are safe and enjoying the snow.

I have 661 that is squeeze filler version of this model since 1992 and it still in very good condition after all these years use and abuse. Nib is just just buttery fine. And I use it as my everyday sketching, drawing pen.

Great video! I saw Doug’s video several weeks ago and ended up building this pen with the SS section, including a 0.6-0.8 mm bent nib. I have been enjoying this very much for the past week. The added weight and look gives it a nice premium feel. The section does feel a bit slippery but in my case, I find that my thumb rests on the clutch ring which holds it nicely in place.

Thanks for nice review Was tempted by the metal section, will now delay pulling the trigger. And it is true that the plastic section is doing a fabulous work . We should not try to fix something that is already working well Friendly cheers

A very worthwhile experiment and I think, if I had a metal section on my 601s, I'd probably reach similar conclusions. Perhaps if the pen had a larger diameter then the metal section wouldn't be too bad, but I have a Lamy Studio with just such a section and I find that a little tricky, so I'm not too sure...

Couldn’t get mine to have any reaction to a magnet. Just a silver colored plastic pen. It is a nice pen still. Didn’t get “metal” hood.

Another interesting video very enjoyable. Douglas Rathbun had a bit in one of his recent videos about putting a coating on the section of his Moonman T2 to mitigate the fact he thought the section was too slippery. I can't remember exactly what he used but he did say it worked and didn't spoil the look of the section, may be worth a try on your metal section.
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I would rough surface before using any coating. But both would change the look. I like the look. One could add a rubber band, some pens have rubber sections. Thanks for watching.

You might want to check out the Hongdian 617. I think it's longer, but it claims to be full metal and has a slightly more grippy texture.

Nice review! You made an interesting observation about people recommending fountain pens. I wonder what kind of questions I would ask someone looking for guidance.
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
My suggestion, do research. Read/watch reviews. What experience do you have? How does it correspond to what others may say about the pens you have used? With so many things there are a lot of variables, hopefully you have an idea of what u want or don't want..

The steel hood is on my want list, but not very high up on my want list. I'm not over-fond of hooded nibs to begin with, but I would strongly consider buying two of the flighters just to have one with the steel hood just to have them in my collection for sake of completeness, even if it is not something I will not be using as an EDC.
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
Hooded nibs have their place. For reliability they can't be beat. Not good for Spencerian but when I'm taking quick notes, that is low on my list. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for the comments on 'what pen should I buy?' I hate seeing that question. I really hate the answers. People are quick to say buy X or Y, you'll love it. I look at these posts and answers and shake my head. There are a few pens that are always mentioned that are controversial enough that the end result could deter a person from ever using a fountain pen ever again.
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that question is very common in social media & generates a lot of comments. Hopefully one does their own research and depends less on the comments of others. Stay safe & healthy.

I like that the metal section helps the balance and looks great, but I know I'd find it slippery also. It does look good though! Just a note, I personally wouldn't call it a "Frankenpen" when you're using optional parts made by the manufacturer specifically for that pen, but I guess it all depends on your definition.

Using parts to make a pen that was not originally sold. I can't confirm parts made by WIng Sung. Thanks for watching.

Only EF & F sold with pen. Most hooded nibs are fine. You can swap nib for a Bobby Special nib or a fude nib. I have done that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIjVdqljnLdnbLM
