It is in fact a themeless Sunday! Surprised me at first aswell but I was pleased to solve it quicker than usual.

Yeah, sure looks like a Happy Holidays puzzle with Equatorial Guinea, Deadliest Catch, and Lite Brite all on the same grid.

Shel did a LOT more than Where the Wild Things Are. He wrote A Boy Named Sue. I've digitized hundreds of hours of his tapes and he was interesting.

This Sunday puzzle "Flowed" quite smoothly for me, until near the end when I misspelled BURQA (with a K). That mistake took me nearly as long to resolve as the rest of the puzzle!

Deadliest Catch is an American reality television series that premiered on the Discovery Channel on April 12, 2005. The show follows crab fishermen aboard fishing vessels in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and snow crab fishing seasons. The base of operations for the fishing fleet is the Aleutian Islands port of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Produced for the Discovery Channel, the show's title is derived from the inherent high risk of injury or death associated with this line of work. From Wikipedia

Devonshire is a historical name for Devon; unless I'm missing something I wouldn't say it's more precise to say Exeter is located there... Surprised to hear Chris has pewter in his head - perhaps this is the key to his crossword-solving skills!

You’re right, that was a slip on my part!

My brother and I got very far on our own today - the entire bottom three quarters! That top left corner really messed us up today. "American Boy" by Estelle is one of my favorite songs of the 2000's (despite its inclusion of the controversial Kanye), so it was funny to see you struggle with it.

Honestly would have had a Sunday record if I hadn't spelled "equatorial" with two I's at first (update: I see Chris did it too! Now I feel better)

I guess you could call it the 100 rule. If the grid appears very open, as this one does, the chances of a theme are low - for the constructor it's enough of a challenge just to complete the fill. To confirm it, look at the last number in the grid - if it's around 100 you can in most cases be certain there's no theme. No idea about the puzzle title though.

I think there was an effort to show waves with the black squares. This puzzle was conspicuous for its straightforward cluing; e.g., "perspires" for "sweats".

Pierre (pronounced “purr” for some reason) is the capital of South Dakota. Very close!
