This is for any quad from Tiny whoops to 7inch+ whether you fly freestyle, cinewhoops, toothpicks, Long Range by line of sight or FPV!
Step 1: VTX antennas can cause a lot of problematic vibrations. Keep them short and secure them tightly so they can't move.
More Info: • Vibration analysis of ...
Step 2: Bidirectional D-shot. Should work out-of the box with BLHeli32 If you are running BLHeli_S you need to upgrade to BLHeli_M to get it working
More info: • BetaFPV Pavo30 reviewe...
Step 3: Filter tuning is a big topic. Fortunately I've broken it right down in this video! • Betaflight 4.2 filter ...
Step 4&5: You can do even more with the PIDs to make the quad fly great! If you want to learn how I have a whole video on it: • Betaflight 4.2 PID tun...

I decided to tune my whoop. I spent hours and hours in past few days watching all possible videos on it. Including Chris's detailed walkthroughs. It did help me understand things. But when I went to work, I realized my whoop doesn't have onboard blackbox logging. So I just gave up. At the end I came here, to this video. With prerequisite that I had bluejay, I followed these few steps - turned off all "unnecessary" filters, and set few numbers on the one that i left. Then I reduced I term and FF and played with Master multiplier. I reached full 2.0. Then I returned I term, and set FF to 2.0 (to match MM). Needles to say I tuned my whoop in like 20mins to fly waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy better. I literary had a smile on my face to see how much better I controlled it. Thank you Chris, you are brilliant!

Thanks Chris, mate we are lucky to have you in the hobbie. I know some give some hate with the level of thought you put in, but believe me there are plenty of us so grateful you're pushing the tech forward for the love if it. Hope you don't get burnt out on FPV like so many, hope it just stays fun for you mate. When all said and done we just out there to have some fun n lose ourselves in lil machines a pack at a time. Very few of us ever plan or can make any money etc from our beloved drones, just fun.

I like the ‘shorties’ like this one. Especially when I forgot to take notes or write any settings down from when I watched the 20 minute vid! And especially when I’m ready to go fly and remember that I wanted to try out that new [take your pick…any setting] to see if it improves the [ take your pick… any setting]. Seriously Chris, the quality of the improvements that you recommend speaks volumes to me. Your vid’s, and the tech in them, have become a first stop in my reference library for quads. Many thanks!

Chris I cannot thank you, Timmy RC and he UAV tech enough today! For the first time since stopping flying on BF3.6, I finally feel in control of my quad again - raw power, locked in, feels like I remember great feeling quads feel like! I did everything you said on this video, except for the antenna, still running my iFlight Albatros and also turned off EVERY BF4.2.9 feature except presets recommended by The UAV tech. Running on RAW PID tuning as it used to be and MAN what a difference! Even TX16s inputs feels a ton smoother without smoothing on 4.2.9. I'm running 8k/8k with BD Dshot 600, JESC 2.2 48khz, motor start 0.125. I instantly have my confidence back, ripped a new 4s pack to death without caring - THANK you so much for all you do, I and all the rest of the unnamed thousands of fpv pilots appreciate it more than you will ever fully know!

Your antenna advice isn't wrong per 'se, but ill take a 25% increase in video quality over a 5% reduction in flight performance.... I think the stock length caddx vista or a stock rush lollipop antenna is a good compromise. no need for the super long antenna, but a stubby isnt enough either...
@grabejud

i agree on you on this. i have a stubby for freestyle/proximity and rush for general flying mix coz it has better video signal.

100% agree with you. I see people running super long antennas on freestyle rigs and having difficulty with vibrations all the time. Just knowing that a long VTx antenna can cause Jello can be really helpful for those pilots! Obviously you have to make the best decision for your flying.
@MrSabram07
@MrSabram07 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, I was wondering how a short stubby would affect range and quality
@mouseFPV
@mouseFPV 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSabram07 to me the issue with a stubby isn't quite that its "worse range in a quantifiable sense", but that it is far more *inconsistent*. When you have LOS from the goggles to the antenna, the range should be the same. The problem with the stubby is there is a much higher chance that carbon or a standoff or the lipo is in the way of that....so it kinda depends.

Thanks Chris for the informative video, the information you present are really valuable and amazingly useful to all hobbyists. I would appreciate your technical advice in regard to my Rekon 4 inch quad, freestyle drone, i am trying to get it done on betaflight and seemingly everything is fine, my issue is the motors, when i checked them on betaflight i made sure the reverse is active so they are all spinning in the right direction and when i tried them on in motors tab, everything worked smoothly, but when i put the props on just to hover the quad and feel it, i just touched the throttle slightly and the quad took off so fast and hit the ceiling, seemingly the motors are spinning too fast without even touching the throttle ,,,,, what do you think Chris ??

WOW cleanest flight I've had with it so far, I'm so impressed, I did both my 5" quads too, cant wait for tomorrow to test them out! Keep up the great work! -One two part question please; I'm using JESC 24khz with dshot300 paired with overclocked f405's, would there be a increased benefit in running 48khz and dshot600, because I've noticed power/thrust decrease going up from 24khz, or do I just need higher pids?

If your F405 can run 8k/8k (which it should be able to I think) then Dshot600 is the way to go. I prefer 48K to 24K myself but you may need very slightly higher PIDs.

longer antennas can realllly help for long range so you dont get frame blocking signal(usually when headed home... have to fly sideways home with short antenna), especially if you only have one antenna using vista.... I just glue/3d print holders for 180mm albatross antennas for my light 20-30 min flyers as they have a stiff shaft that doesnt wobble and you can get it to stick up a lot higher to get out of the way of the frame

two different scenario, for long range you probably not doing any flippy floppy freestyle stuff, in that case a long antenna won't affect much. But for agreesive freestyly, long antenna could be a problem.

I don't think so. There isn't much point having more than one antenna on Analog because it dosn't support diversity or MIMO. Just put more power through an Omni!

I love to dive in the mountains on a 7 "drone. I get jelly during the dive. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqXUaohvbKmBrtk I have not tried shortening the antenna at the back as you suggest. Could this be the cause of the jelly? I think when I lower the engine speed, there is a resonance at low rpm. If the antenna is shortened and when the drone is turned towards me, the GoPro camera obstructs the antenna and the video signal becomes worse. On jelly, I did not test the shortened antenna. But from the pitch, I see little noise at 60-70 hertz. Could it be an antenna? I plan to turn off the noise filtering step by step in order to achieve the correct I-term compensation of the motors. Or do not reduce throttle while diving. There is also an option to print mounts for the gopro camera on the stands, which will damp vibration. I also have a 5 "drone, the antenna is long, the mounts for the GoPro camera on the racks and there are no vibrations.
@ChrisRosser
@ChrisRosser 2 жыл бұрын
If you have a long antenna you have vibrations being created. Whether that is causing flight issues is difficult to know without logs. I have yet to see a quad with a long antenna that isn't limited by it in terms of flight performance.

@maxrackstraw 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that can be a good point considering these settings are great for most 5 inch setups. The only reason they are not default is because the devs of betaflight want the defaults to work on basically any quad you can thing of. Half an inch to 20 inch props. Its defaults are tuned for broad compatibility not perfomance unfortunately for 5 inch pilots... Although its fairly easy to tune nowadays!

With the stubby antenna you are wrong! The stubbys are not more durable. They break very easy because they can't move... Already Destroyed 2 of them. And the signal is not good enough with rhem. Iam using the Lumenier AXII antenna and these are not too long and also not wobbling around. 👍

I find the best is to use a flexible antenna with a UFL or MMCX and cable tie it to the arms. I think stubby durability does depend a lot on how you mount it. Thanks!

Please stop proposing filter settings like that. All it does is making people popping up in the fb review group asking for help because of burning hot motors! If you stick to the bf devs recommendation leave the gyro filter enabled and put the gyro slider to 2.0. You can put the dterm slider to a max. of 1.4. No gyro filtering with a single biquad is the worst filter recommendation you can give! Default I-term is already too high for a 5“ miniquad. I-Term = P-Term+15% is an appropriate value for almost all sizes. Get the balance right, raise your gains (which will be way lower than possible with your filter suggestion) and use FF to get the gyro tracking right. If your stick feeling isn‘t right after that being set up you need to change your rates.
@l0stb1t
@l0stb1t 2 жыл бұрын
The gyro slider at 2.0 is nearly useless, so you may just as well disable it. D term filtering is much more important to prevent hot motors, I agree having the slider at 1.4 is pretty much the maximum. Biquad (or even better the PT3 in Betaflight 4.3) works fine but don't even think about going higher than 110 Hz...
@marlin-fpv
@marlin-fpv 2 жыл бұрын
@@l0stb1t With both gyro sliders being off you still loose like 10db of attenuation for the gain of maybe .3ms of latency which is worth nothing. Having a very clean gyro and d-term allows for much higher PID gains which will give you much higher PID authority resulting in a superb propwash handling.
@l0stb1t
@l0stb1t 2 жыл бұрын
@@marlin-fpv Sounds reasonable. I've always tried to get the lowest sensible filter delay, but will do some experiments with a bit more filtering and see how much the higher PIDs help.

If someone has hot motors flying a mini/micro quad on this filter setup more likely than not there is something up with the mechanics of the quad and they should probably be looking for some support with that. In my experience this filter recommendation works better (cooler motors) than 1.5/1.5 on the sliders with less delay on most builds.

@@ChrisRosser Not one of my buddies quads including my quads (clean/new builds) is flying at least decent with those settings. A lot of people popped up in the review group lately flying those settings asking for help, all of them on clean builds. The betaflight devs recommendations is not to switch off any default filters and don‘t use a biquad on dterm but obviously you seem to know better than Chris Thompson. 🙄
