Fantastic video I only personally do not agree with throttle expo. I learned muscle memory for linear throttle, and although it takes a lot more skill to develop, I feel that it is more precise with the right pilot.
@GRANOLAFPV
@GRANOLAFPV 2 жыл бұрын
I think throttle expo works great *if* you’re always flying at roughly the same throttle. But for most pilots that’s not the case, so having an expo curve on the throttle results in different throttle sensitivity at different values, which just makes things harder. That’s my .02 at least.
@franciswong26

As a beginner, I do agree that having a linear throttle expo is more important. On the other hand, I do feel thankful that Chris points out there is an option for us if we need to.

Yeah see I've been trying throttle expo but haven't really been liking it, it feels more difficult to drop altitude, I don't wanna have to drop my thumb that far. It's funny though, I've spent a year and a half away from the hobby but my muscle memory for linear throttle persists. I think the scaled throttle limit at 80 or 90 increases throttle resolution while maintaining that linear feel. But I do see how expo can be useful, I just don't think it's for me

I think yaw rate and tracking is very important in throttle adjustment (mode 2 only). If you're having to move yaw too much in conjunction with precise throttle changes you loose precision. I like keeping yaw more sensitive in center and event faster rates because you move the stick less and requires less variance in throttle muscle memory.

When I was watching that motor discussion video on Bardwell's channel and some of the other speakers were a bit more sold on the change motor to get the right throttle feel idea. I was really feeling Chris at that point. YOU DONT NEED THE MOST EXPENSIVE MOTOR TO GET THE RIGHT THROTTLE FEEL. But yeah you do want that omega dot. Throttle mid, throttle expo and scaling are the settings that massively change your flying experience, even more than PIDs , its something I learnt from one of my airplane friends , its really great that Chris has now emphasized more on this lifechanging setting.

I have listened to all 8 of these betaflight 4.3 tuning videos, and man oh man. I can't wait to get out of work and get my cinewhoop to fly better than it already is. It's a geprc cinerun frame, with all the guts and motors from a diatone taycan, with the 1606 motors (3750kv). Just swapping the frame, which is about 100g lighter, adding 4.3, and rpm filtering it flies so much better but has some issues. And I never thought about throttle expo. Which...duh...makes so much sense for a cinewhoop. It's become my favorite drone for cruising long range, down the shore of the intercoastal waterway, or through the woods following a mountain bike. It has slight bobbles at a constant cruise, and the throttle is a bit touchy at cruise speed, but I don't want to limit the throttle at all because I use full throttle sometimes. I can't wait to try throttle expo

Thank you so much for this vid. That's gonna be a great link to post when these discussions come up. I was always confused why people would detune their quad to make it feel different. Your BF4.2 rate vid changed my life quite heavily :) Throttle limit: I'm gonna ignoring this... There is nothing better than punching that throttle to 2000 and jump in the air... love it XD Trottle expo: OMG... so much agreed... this one setting makes such a difference. All of a sudden keeping a precise height close to the ground (for cinematic stuff) and also catching a quad closely to the ground from a dive so much easier. Actual rates: I even set the center sensitivity to 10. 670 max rate and .5 expo here too :) This was a suggestion by Marc Spats and while it took some getting used to, now I got smooth flow and rapid rolls all in one rate setting. Love it, probably gonna stick with it. I never played around with RC smoothing though. That's gonna be very interesting! I too have test flown a KISS quad and can confirm that it feels quite "organic", smooth but predictable... while handling prop wash really well. Some people say, tuning this RC smoothing value on BF is what makes the difference and results in the same feel on BF. Let's find out! Do I leave those cut-offs just at auto and only change the auto-factor?
@ChrisRosser

Rates really influence the quality of flights a lot. I like the smoother freestyle flight so I use low rates, around 330 on all three axes. For racing flights, in addition to the low rates, I use throttle scale at 85%, which greatly improved my control on the track and helped me lower my lap time.

Thanks for the incredibly informative video as always! I've been running stock Emuflight (and loving it) in my FPV Cycle Glide builds because for some reason I couldn't get it to fly really well with Betaflight 🤔. The more I watch your videos, the more I kinda want to try BF again. Maybe I'll give it a shot! 🙏 P. S. The new AOS 5 looks great! Your battery straps are installed incorrectly though (under, over, under instead of over, under, over 😉)
@ChrisRosser
@ChrisRosser 2 жыл бұрын
FPV cycle frames are very noisy in general (Bob pushes very hard for minimum weight which leads to more vibration). Emuflight default filtering is a lot more than BF default filtering which is why it works on those frames. More filtering = more delay though so it's not a good tradeoff in terms of setpoint tracking/flight feel. Better to have a stiffer frame and run BF 4.3.
@nerdCopter
@nerdCopter 2 жыл бұрын
EmuF defaults are certainly over-filtered. Release-notes and Wiki specifically admit it and recommend pilots to tune based on blackbox logs. The wiki gives specific suggestions related to enabling/disabling Dynamic_Filter with relation to the quantity of dTermLPF cutoffs to apply.

I don't want to sound argumentative, but I strongly disagree with Chris's approach to throttle expo. The main reason is that the hover point of the quad varies so much as its weight changes. So if your throttle mid is correct for gopro on with 1250 mAh battery, it will be completely wrong with gopro off with 1100 mAh battery. I strongly recommend learning with linear throttle, and if you have trouble managing hover or cruise, use throttle scale to bring the overall power of the quad down until you can manage it. The reason throttle is different than the other three channels is that the "center point" of the other three channels is always the same regardless of the quad's weight, layout, and etc. If we were dealing with a PID controller that automatically managed altitude, then having expo around the "center point" would make sense. Since we are not, I feel a linear throttle is the most predictable, and it must be on the pilot to learn to manage it.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 2 жыл бұрын
In addition, the throttle position changes depending on maneuvers you're doing. When I started learning to fly, I struggled with altitude maintenance and used throttle expo. I found it was easy to manage altitude in forward cruise, but when I tried to do sharp turns, I lacked precision. The reason is that, when tilting into a sharp turn, you need a lot more throttle, and I was leaving the "soft spot" of my expo curve.
@Quick-Flash
@Quick-Flash 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed
@ChrisRosser
@ChrisRosser 2 жыл бұрын
No worries. Rates are super personal so if linear throttle works best for you and you've tried expo then that's great! I usually use a consistent setup on a particular quad. However, if you only use a moderate amount of expo the exact position of Throttle Mid becomes less important. It's also worth mentioning that even with a linear throttle curve the response of thrust Vs throttle is highly nonlinear.
@pietlopsa9164
@pietlopsa9164 2 жыл бұрын
But why are soo many people talking about their throttle feel with diff props and motors? Kabab is one of them. And it certainly is not about having a linear motor response, its more about being smooth and controllable in the low end and snappy in the top end. The throttle midpoint is complete nonsens. I tested it and I didnt like it at all. It felt pretty uncontrollable. I would be happy testing a different approach, to make the throttle feel more linear and therefore more predictable by compensating the "inbuilt" throttle expo. This is because most motor to prop combinations are already having characteristics of throttle expo. I agree on chriss's thesis to first choose a motor to prop combination, that is efficient, low moment of inertia, etc.. and THEN modulate the throttle feel by the inbuilt software. That way you have way more space to achieve your perfect throttle feel. But not by setting a midpoint that is one time at 54percent and the next day its 10deg warmer so therefore the viscocity of the air is higher. So many valuables you have no control over

really? i use 2 Presets for my heavier and normal setups. in addition to throttle mid i also changed the pitch setup higher on the heavier builds, because i had the feeling that with the heavier batteries the pitch was a bit behind to roll reaction. i put all my batteries aligned with the frame, so i thought the bigger batts have more affect on the pitch axes, than on roll (yaw maybe also, but....) i cant proove it, but i think more weight has an affect to throttle and pitch. theoretical yaw also, bit i let it there so far.

RC smoothing will add delay based on the cutoff. It's a third order filter so it adds a fair bit. However, it only adds delay to the stick inputs not the PID loop so the quad still responds quickly to propwash 👍

Also, I was wondering if there is a type of filter that operates on the RPY 3 vector distance delta, and if that could produce better results than 3 filters that operate on each axis. Finally, is there a filtering solution that is more aggressive in the center stick positions than the extremes? Or is having exponential rates basically accomplishing that effect. Cheers.

I haven't started work on the AOS 7 V2. I will update it at some stage but I have cinewhoops and a cinelifter to do before then!

If you find yourself in a position to only be using 80ish percent throttle and you are on 6s then you might consider stepping down a cell to 5s. That way your esc is working more efficiently and you get more flight time.

In my experience, 6S still offers better performance in terms of responsiveness and reduced battery sag, even why flying in the lower part of the throttle. I get longer flight times on 6S as well, given that grams-per-watt-hour is usually better with 6S (I think). And while the ESC is running less voltage on 5S vs 6S, it’s also pushing more amps as a result. I might be wrong on any of the above :)

Nah, I feel like only viable scenario for throttle expo is when you only fly one setup. I have three vastly different drones (ok, one is being built rn, but it's gonna be vastly different :D) and I run varying setups on them, so it'll probably just ruin my existing muscle memory and prevent me from acquiring a new one
@Stygmah

You just keep the same expo and adjust throttle mid depending on what hover throttle is.

@@Stygmah Thanks for the tips! Chris just introduces where we can find the settings and explain what they are. We need to think how to apply into our quads in order to make it constant amongst them.

As someone who firmly made clear my feelings on a certain someone's setpoint tracking obsession this is a refreshingly balanced opinion. We can all agree to disagree as long as people don't start screaming I am right and thus you are wrong. Thougj not directly about it, as someone who loves kiss despite its many foibles there's lots that can be gained from looking at why it is loved by many freestyle pilots. I'd be interested in analysis as to why this is rather than negative trying to score points vids.

Yeah, I'm certain the difference is in the rates rather than setpoint tracking as there is not so much difference in setpoint tracking in normal flying.

Geezus it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard every time I hear it. 20 plus years as a process control and automation systems engineer, and no one in industry ever says “pid” (as if it’s a word!) when referring to PID control and/or controllers.
