"Dimes to doughnuts" was "Dollars to doughnuts" when I grew up in midwest in the 60's. The doughnuts referenced were not the tasty treats but rather proxy for zero, the number, as a doughnut looks like a zero. Fantastic build. I am glad your folks liked it.

Yeah the original phrase is "Dollars to Doughnuts." Never heard the dimes thing. The Daily Nevada State Journal, February 1876: "Whenever you hear any resident of a community attempting to decry the local paper... it's dollars to doughnuts that such a person is either mad at the editor or is owing the office for subscription or advertising."

I grew up with the 'trades' and have always used imperial units. Building houses and such. Then for my 2nd 30 year career I worked in the trades for a Japanese automaker where all the machines I worked on (presses/CNC mills) were metric. So now I can look at a nut/bolt wrench and tell you the size at a glance, either imperial or metric.

I'm 67 and have made a living working with wood all my life. I have a mahogany lap desk, with a secret compartment, that my granddad (furniture maker) made for my grandmother. It was the last thing he made before going off to die in WW2. Make things. Pass them on. When your son goes off to college, or travelling or whatever when he's young, offer to store that piece you made for him. Give it back to him later in his life and maybe he will pass it on one day. One thing that you make, no matter how you think it turned out, means more than a million factory made pieces of junk. Good luck with your journey and have fun!

For the measurement debate, I love the metric system. I didn't realize that 1cm^3 is 1 ml. There's no equivalent in imperial. I started using it more with my 3D printer and started liking it more. I also actively use the imperial system daily as well with things like cooking, weight, height of a person, and lumber

I had a similar dust issue with my CNC. Being in sunny Sydney Australia, I usually just push all of my dusty woodworking operations out onto the driveway and enjoy the sunshine whilest blessing the neighbours with my dust. This keeps my garage clean and dust free 🙂. However, I have a CNC that I built and this beast of a thing generally stays put, so it has a shopvac/cyclone and I duct the waste air outside. One day I was doing a really lengthy operation on some MDF and left the CNC unattended (we both know how bad an idea this is). When the noise stopped, I came back into the garage and there was dust everywhere - piled up is little snow drifts in the corners, against everything and on everything 🥺. It seems that some material broke free and was sucked up into the cyclone, which then blocked and sent the dust to the shopvac, which quickly gave up and blocked and somehow forced off the vent hose - at which point buckets and buckets of MDF dust swirled around everywhere.

Wood dust fires often occur due to moisture getting into the dust, which generates heat as the fibers break down. These wood dust collection units have been known to explode, especially when people open a sealed unit causing a fire back blast.

Beautiful work. I like the styles you come up with, and your willingness to work with things that are unique. One suggestion, especially when working with small-diameter drill bits. Instead of powering them through to full depth in one shot, send them in a little, back them out to clear chips, send them a bit more and back them out, etc. There's less wear on the bit's edge, less chance of it snapping off, and less chance of blowout on a through-cut.

The interesting thing about the imperial system is it's ability to be equally split into smaller units with basic tools. Simple center tool splits 1 in down the middle into 1/2 in pieces. (Ignoring kerf at moment and just measurements). You have other tools that work with 1/2 in or basically any subdivision of 2. But take a 25mm board down the middle you have 12.5mm. And sure those aren't the measurements that you will end with, but the point is metric works great on paper, imperial works wonders with dividing tools.

I'm not sure if you'll read this comment, but here it goes: While epoxy resin is rather flame retardant, it does break down over time (especially as a dust such as from the CNC), and when it breaks down, it causes heat to build. You need 4 elements for a fire. Heat, oxygen, fuel, and a chemical reaction. That dust collector more than likely had left over resin sitting in the bag that was already heating up and causing a chemical reaction. When the new dust was introduced, you basically made an atomized fuel source with oxygen, which caused the fire to shoot out the side. I think your best option, since you work with epoxy resin frequently, is to keep your equipment as clean and empty as possible. I hope this helps because I'd hate to see or hear of something bad happening to you or your shop! Love the videos!

Crazy opinion here, but your parent's plywood dining table was one of your first videos I ever watched and it is still one of my favorite designs of yours from over the years. I love seeing how you re-imagined it hardwood. It is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, and I'm so glad that you and your shop are ok.

Thanks...yeah, I always liked that one too. I just think that the single, central spine for support was sort of a design flaw. So this one will hold up better through the years. Plus its' more their style.
