I think one of the major pitfalls of this movie was that the casting is very "Of its time". If this movie were made in the 70s-90s they would have properly cast the characters to actually look like their comic counterparts, with Valerian being traditionally masculine and rougish, and Lauraline being more traditionally effeminate and chipper. But we're currently in a period where slightly short, cute baby faced men are given the roles of traditionally masculine characters. (Compare the casting of Paul Atreides in David Lynchs "Dune" adaptation from the 80s to the new "Dune" by Villeneuve. Lynchs paul was depicted as looking boyish, but in a way where you could tell he was in the process of growing into a full man to fit the role of his very masculine father. Villeneuves Paul looks like a twink. There are manh other examples too, like the casting for The Flash compared with his originsk depictions, and the succedingly baby faced transition in the spiderman films from Toby Maguire to Andrew Garfield, to Tom Holland. Each one more boyish than the last) On top of that, theres been a push away from traditionally "beautiful" women towards casting more odd/unique looking women like this Lauraline or actresses like Anya Taylor. I wont go as deep into that though

They should have said he was 90 years old or something. At least then we could think, "Oh, they've perfected aging technology, so it makes sense he looks young despite his skill." Instead he really doesn't look like a well-respected Major, made worse by the fact he doesn't act like a well-respected Major. He didn't even bother to read the mission briefing before going down to the planet.

+Nicolas7gr Being an actor is a job. Does she have the skills necessary to do the job? All signs point to no. If she wants to be an actor, she should get some training and do the work involved. But why bother when you have a rich well-connected family and still get cast in things because of your eyebrows and nothing else? There are at least 1000 other actresses out there who could have done a better job. (conservative estimate -- the real number is probably like 100,000)

Baloney. Princess of Mars, 1917. Buck Rogers, 1929. Flash Gordon, 1934. Lots of of sci-fi movies in the 1950s. Dune, 1965. Star Trek, 1967. 2001 a Space Odyssey, 1968. Valerian started in 1967, and none of it was translated into English until 1981. The Valerian comic was based on the US comics Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and Prince Valiant.

@@jameshay7247 no, it clearly wasn t, every modern sci fi easily fit and find correpondence in valerian comics, unlike on the other ones. the ones you mention are simple colored versions of even older sci fi. valerian was radically different from everything that existed before. you can actually see Ridley scott, william gibson and many many other talking about how they were inspired by these guys

I agree with you. I like this movie. It has its flaws, like, the leads don't really work. They don't emote as much as they should in the situation, and its evident they are reacting to empty space and tennis balls that will be CGI'ed over later on, kinda like The Star Wars Prequels. But I liked the movie overall. The world building is fantastic, the visuals are breathtaking, and the story while very simplistic, is coherent and understandable. Those Pearl aliens are the most beautiful aliens I have ever seen on the big screen. So I don't understand how so many critics are saying the plot makes no sense or is all over the place. It makes perfect sense. I shall be buying a Blu-Ray as soon as its out. I am a fan.

The first act of this movie is essentially a Star Trek mission with a Star Wars vibe to it. SInce the comics came out after Star Trek went on air, I'll assume they did borrow a bunch of things, especially how Star Trek portrayed alien cultures, and the military drama aspect, then went ballistic with the unique designs and injecting a more adventure vibe, and that's where the Star Wars inspiration lies at. The Bounty Hunter/Underworld aspects of Star Wars is definitely from Valerian, especially the entire Mos Eisley sequence. That being said, judging Valerian from the movie (haven't read it), I think the Star Wars inspiration ends there. Nothing else in the Star Wars universe seemed similar to this with the exception of Felucia's design.

The problem with Valerian is that Luc Besson is just too much in love with the story. There was so much waste in it, which he couldn't bring himself to cut, because he loved it too much. That five minute poledancing scene for example or several infodumps which were completely unnecessary and really broke up the flow of the movie. But it was visually stunning. And it had the best opening to a scifi movie I've ever seen. The way they introduced us to Alpha was perfect. IMHO the entire movie should have taken place on Alpha- so no weird dimensional market in the desert- and that marriage subplot should have been gotten rid off. If Valerian and Laureline had been a new team with Valerian trying to lay the moves on her and striking out the shaky chemistry would have been fitting.
@JeffAndresWilliams
@JeffAndresWilliams 7 жыл бұрын
I didn't have any problems with the visuals or the acting (besides Rihanna's VO lines when she wasn't on-screen). The plot really was the weakest part, especially the point of conflict between the two characters at the end that just magically solved itself. The entire segment where Laureline had to find Valerian and Valerian, in turn, had to rescue Larueline could have been done without.
@bearzerger
@bearzerger 7 жыл бұрын
I can forgive them for the idea behind the rescue segment. That scene with the ridiculous hat and the brains for dinner reveal was the biggest laugh I had in the entire movie. And as I said, if Valerian and Laureline were a new team this could have served as a perfect way to show them actually bonding. Streamlining the plot and far fewer detours which served no purpose other than to satisfy the inner fanboy of Besson would have made this movie quite a bit better.
@olsensth
@olsensth 7 жыл бұрын
WHat you call waste was the best part of the movie. All this background info makes the world believeable. I hate that most Hollywood films are so streamlined these days. Terminator 2 for example (one of the best sci fi movies ever) drops minutes and minutes of infodumps all the time.
@bearzerger
@bearzerger 7 жыл бұрын
Some level of infodump is necessary. For example the opening with the evolution of Alpha was great and I said so in my original post. However, that does not apply for those two minutes when the ship A.I. rattles down statistics about the station. Same with that infodump at the end when they explained the entire history of the Myur or however they were called since they escaped their destroyed planet. It was unnecessary and it completely ruined the tension at the end. As a viewer I could have inferred all of what it told us without that lengthy flashback. I still remain of the opinion that the movie would have been far better if it had cut out poledance, those two infodumps and the desert market and had started after the opening and that initial flashback with Valerian arriving at Alpha by himself. There he could have gotten his new partner Laureline and together they could have embarked on that first mission to get the little critter from the same criminal but set on Alpha. That crimeboss could have been featured when Valerian went to save Laureline from that braineating emperor. Perhaps those two characters could even have been one and the same. The rest could have stayed pretty much the same. All of this would have made for a tighter story, given an explanation for the shaky chemistry and cut some fifteen minutes from the runtime

The grade you gave it makes complete sense, you can really tell by even just the trailers most of the time and effort went into effects. Also, Cara should've been Valerian out of the two choices because she looked 10 times more badass than the guy. Even so, in my opinion cara delevigne really isn't that strong of an actress- the casting was just really off for this movie. They probably just chose big names (Cara, Rihanna) to get more publicity. This could've been amazing, but instead it was just every thing everyone expected it to be, average

It's baffling how many things you're comparing this to when the comic it's based on precedes all of it. And I agree with your points about the two leads. It looks like they were cast for giving off the vibe of young French kids. Maybe if the film were in French, the dryness between them would come across as more romantic in an edgy French way.

Irony: Seeing a youtube ad for the movie being reviewed before the Stuckmann video review. Confession: I only saw the trailer twice in theaters and I will be seeing this. I certainly will not go into Valerian expecting any sort of true cinematic story-telling greatness. However, I am interested to see the film from a visual bombast perspective. Luc Besson IS capable of strong work - I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Conclusion: At the very least, Valerian may end up being a perfect example of a personal popcorn movie for me. cheers Chris!

Thanks for the review Chris! I saw it today as well and gave it a "Shaka Thumbs Up!" Visually it is a wonder and I liked the story; but also enjoyed 5th Element and Babylon 5 which I guess were directly inspired by Valerian! At it's core this is the movie that Jupiter Assending SHOULD have been! :)

There is a scary idea I've heard that they hire talentless one-note actresses on purpose as the way the female mind works seems to require a reader/viewer insertion character so the idea is that you make the woman indistinct and boring then the audience can put themselves in her place - where as blokes seem fine in following the adventures of someone not like them. Woman seem to need this way in. Personally I hate this idea and if it's true of female psychology it's kinda depressing - I hope it's just a quirk of the teenage mind though. And not of adult females. But since I heard the idea brought up in relation to 50 shades and Twilight it's really depressed me. Oh and Sexist how (other than the lack of clothes and the poledancing?)

Thank you for a review, i agree 90% :) I went for a visuals, kind of knowing that the main story line is not as strong as it could be. So low expectations in story wise and really high expectations in visual world. I was stunned!! Loved the City its self seen from space and all the tiny worlds in it and the glowing pearl-people. So i am the one who will strongly recommend other people to see it. But only the ones who have loved Avatar+Blade Runner+Kingsman. And even though i tiny crush in Dane DeHaan since Kill Your Darlings, i do have to agree that in Valerian he seemed to be more like random pretty boy on the screen. Still...love it!

I loved the movie, but without its faults. I did not like the casting for the protagonists and I disliked the constant flirting. A movie that also has very young looking actors with baby faces and that really stressed the teeny nature of the relationship was 'Baby Driver' but the way it marketed itself was all class and style . It looked mature , despite having those 'teen romance' underpinnings, and it works. Also the weird dreamy Thelma Louise type love story made that movie charming. And it didn't really feel just pinned on to me, but like a central element. Like a typical musical plot stabbed into a brutal heist movie lol.

I am a fan of the Valarian comic book series and the movie is very true to the comic books and i can highly recommend them - if you are a sci-fi fan. People can easily misunderstand what the main characters are - they are not soldiers but agents of space and time. Many of the inhabitants in the city of a thousand planets in the movie are straight from the comic books. And the ship is able to travel in time. I think the movie had a incredible cool opening sequence .

I really liked this movie, I actually loved it! It is original, different and the fact that the actors are "new" is a plus. But maybe I'm not the usual target for scify movies, not a fan of Star Wars or anything, so maybe that's why I enjoyed this one so much. I really liked her character and I I liked her as an actress, I have no idea who she is, but she sold me the character, I believed it. The chemistry was a bit awkward between them, I'll give you that, that part of the story needed some build up. I think maybe people are too used to super heroes or reboots and when something new comes along they are disappointed to be surprised. Maybe that's why all the blockbusters look alike. I think this movie will be appreciated over time.

The movie Valerian's story and the characters' chemistry are the way they are because this movie is based off the original comic series that started getting published way back in 1967. Its story may be outdated nowadays, but it was very impressive for the late 1960's, especially since it predates Star Wars.
