The Village Commentary Highlights with Eric Striffler: • IS THE VILLAGE M. NIGH...
Chris Stuckmann talks about The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan, the hilarious mockumentary that was marketed as a real-life expose of the filmmaker. It aired on the SyFy channel in July 2004, and afterwards, SyFy admitted the whole thing was a big hoax to promote The Village. Let’s have some fun talking about this insane piece of moviemaking.

It’s true. Although The Sixth Sense is fantastic & Im definitely a defender of Signs, Unbreakable is I think just such powerful & unique film-making. Might be in my top 10, definitely top 30. Then you have Lady in the Water, After Earth, & a handful of others that are absolute poison. Bizarre.

That places him right there with the other “dice roll” directors where you can’t tell if you’ll get a masterpiece or something to make fun of. These guys appear to have exhausted the best of their creative abilities in the prime of their career. They also made movies what went on to not only define but create its own style and genre of film....but in this same filmography they have movies that are possibly some of the worst movies in said genre or ever made. These include Ridley Scott(Alien, Bladerunner😀/Alien Covenant😬) John McTiernan(Diehard, Predator😀/Rollerball😬) Francis Ford Coppola(Apocalypse Now, The Godfather😀/JACK😬) Zack Snyder(300, Watchmen😀/Suckerpunch😬) The Wachowski’s(Bound/The Matrix😀/Jupiter Ascending😬) My undying love and respect(or bias🤷🏿‍♂️) for John Carpenter prevent me from placing him on this list as well. My hand literally refused to let me type the final letters in his name.

There's a book called the man who heard voices and it's about m night trying to get lady in the water made. It's fascinating. He had a huge falling out with Disney and left to go to Warner Bros and pretty much everyone that had his back and he worked with prior to Lady had abandoned him. He lost confidence, I believe. Disney didn't believe in lady and really didn't wanna make it, but gave him the green light. M night decided not to make it because he didn't feel they wanted to do it. So he went to wb.

Lady in the Water was shot in Levittown, PA, which is in the Philadelphia metro area. The apartment complex's design is common in places like California, but M. Night famously insisted on shooting there. The poor preformance of this movie is probably why he lost the ability to dictate the filming location when more sensible options were available.

There's actually a young adult book that has a close enough plot (no monsters, I believe, other than a lack of modern health care) from the 90s called Running Out of Time. But in the book the twist is revealed VERY early on and then the bulk of the book is a combination of ticking clock suspense and fish-out-of-water experiences as the main character comes to terms with what it means about everything they believed about their life.

That part isn’t even really a joke. There ARE a lot of actors who actually demand that on film sets. Not even just during takes... the entire time the actor is on set, you’re not allowed to look them in the eyes. It’s one of the most fucked up, yet strangely understandable things about the movie industry. Some actors are just that sensitive about their process and don’t want to be taken out of character by having to acknowledge that there’s a bunch of human beings around them that wouldn’t be there in the story, so they don’t want to have someone look them in the eyes and connect with their humanity in a way that’s hard to ignore. It’s easier to pretend nobody is there if you never actually “see” them. Of course, the other way to look at it is that a lot of Hollywood stars are pampered, elitist, entitled brats who get a sense of satisfaction from feeling “above” the plebs working on set and would never condescend to recognize their humanity by giving them the privilege of looking a God among insects in the eye. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe somewhere in between.

Interesting. I didn't know this existed. The Village wasn't my favorite of his films, but I grew to like it. Signs is my favorite. I have a really boring story about Shyamalan. I was on a flight with him and his family. Two of his daughters were sitting next to me. The book his eldest daughter was reading caught my eye because it had pictures of Johnny Depp dressed as Edward Scissorhands. Anyway, I looked across the aisle and saw that Shyamalan was sitting there with his wife and youngest child. That's it. That's the whole story. I know. It's boring. Equally boring: I ran into Adrian Brody at a Bass Pro Shop in Las Vegas. I know... it's all mundane.

It makes me happy to see how much you’ve grown man... I’ve been watching for years, since i was a high schooler I’d stay up late watching your reviews and some, notably your Home Alone review, have gotten me through pretty tough times. It’s a great feeling to see a movie you love so much be praised for the same reasons by someone you look up to. Seeing you grow from doing Worst of the Year videos to stepping down from that due to your growing respect for the art of film, is just inspiring. I feel like we’ve both grown as people and even though you may never meet me, I just wanted to say human to human, thank you Chris for always being true, respectful, and most importantly, a genuine soul. If I really like a movie, I’ll watch it repeatedly & focus on a different aspect each time. The movie as a whole first, then the writing, acting, directing, cinematography, music & lighting etc. I haven’t dissected a lot of movies but I find it a very satisfying and illuminating experience. That's one of the reasons I relate to you so much, Chris, and I totally get your approach, avoiding the same old nasty comments about M. Night and his career. You probably have been asked this a ton of times this, but I wonder if you read the book "The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale": it's a great behind the scenes look into the production of Lady in the Water. I also heard Night was disappointed about this "biography", 'cause he felt like it didn't give a good image of him, but I personally liked this book a lot, and I think after reading it I understood his personality, fears and desires way more.
