I actually watched this movie in a theater situated in the Presidio, San Francisco, which for those who don't know it's where the Lucasfilm headquarters are located. I was lucky enough to get invited to a premiere I believe (because it was not out in theaters yet at the time) with very few "elected" people (I guess, or maybe there were some journalists aswell). I was just a young boy so I didn't pay much attention to the details of that particular screening, but later I realized. Thing is some family friends invited me to stay at their house for a full month there in S. Francisco, to allow me to experience the city on my own (I'm from Italy), so I obviously accepted (had to work 2 months back here to afford the tickets lol). Turned out the man (the husband, in that couple) was involved in the movie industry back in the 70's and 80's so he had connections, that's why I was able to get into that screening. Awesome experience. I'll never forget it. Still remember the Yoda's statue in the park, and Boba Fett and Darth Vader's statues inside the building.

I pretty much agreed with this review when I first saw Super 8. It's beautifully made, and it perfectly captured the time period and the lives of geeky film-making kids living in that time period. I loved it... at first. But then I saw it again a couple months later. The second time, I was ready for the rush of nostalgia, and as the plot unfolded, the generous use and re-use of movie cliches become pretty disappointing. I still think it's a good movie, but it quickly dropped off my all-time favorites list. I'd be curious to know what Chris thinks of it now, a few years later.
@CherylLoke7 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I just watched it recently (2017) and I thought this movie was cheesy as hell especially the ending. I guess it was the first of its kind in 2011? because I really didn't like the movie

Finally got around to watching this. After Stranger Things, which basically improved on this exact formula of a movie (group of kids solving a mystery, creepy monster, deadbeat cop dad solving mystery parallel) and Super 8 as a result is not as enjoyable. The kids of ST are so much better and more interesting and ST really leans into the era which Super 8 barely does

Nice review, Chris. Nice shirt too! You seemed to like Super 8 more than me (my review is on my channel), perhaps because you connected with it more on a nostalgic level. Any way, I agree it's a well made and entertaining film, though I felt it was a little formulaic towards the end, and the supposed "SUPER 8 secret" was a little unsurprising.

@TecumsehSherman3613 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 80%. Loved the acting of all the actors, loved the kids, loved the story with the kids, funny, touching, excellent. However, the end was unti-climatic for me. When the mistery was revealed it just seemed like it did not match the rest of the movie. sub plots like the military role were just rendered useless, the story with the parents was just neatly semi-wrapped at the end. There was no satisfying end or an epilogue.

Great review! I saw Super 8 last night too. The movie was very good and you basically said all that I loved about it! (4/5) So I'll just state my flaws. Noah Emmerich a very underrated actor. Here, his character is bland and way underdeveloped for being the villain of the movie. With all of the quick teases throughout,I was anticipating something great and all I was left with the entity was ok. It felt like a rehash of what I've seen before. You've seen the ending before and the reasons for it.
