We all have to atleast give credit to Shyamalan for making original movies and taking risks. Also The Happening is hilarious.

@vaughntaylor76874 жыл бұрын
This is one of those movies where you have to listen to what they tell you and you have to abide by the rules the plot sets. If she has to be picked up from the same place she entered this world in why would she leave? Also in the beginning they explain once the humans moved away from the water they started going down hill I’m sure that’s also another factor that keeps her close to home. There would be no reason to venture outside of the set location outside of you just wanting to see that happen nor is there any room or reason to speed this movie up with action because the writers and directors want you to feel what the characters feel they want you to be just as clueless anxious and doubtful as the characters do. In 2020 compared to the story telling we have now I think this is a great movie

I actually like Shyamalan...honestly i feel most of his movies have been mis-categorized by Hollywood. Take The Village for example; that wasn't a true horror movie. It was sold as such, and the day i saw it, people were literally walking out of the theater. It's more of a modern-day fairytale. But even in that context it's hard to fully categorize it. Unbreakable is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I believe was copied in the tv show Heroes which was largely uninspired... but anyway, great work Chris! Love your reviews.

This movie is about the power of art (literature, movies, *stories*) to help us find out who we are, and to help us find our purpose. In the intro fairy tale thing, we are told that humans have been ignoring the water women muses sent to inspire them to greatness. We have become disillusioned with stories. We only really experience them in the form of hollywood films, and our interpretations of them are filtered through the eyes of critics, who are especially jaded. For example even if a filmmaker tried to use rain as a metaphor for purification, a critic would see it is as just a cliche. So we have a situation where people don't know how to analyze movies anymore to really connect with them. They make superficial connections, like Paul Giamatti does at first when he assumes that he is the protector, that the guild are the men, that the healer is the old lady, and that the interpreter is the crossword guy. On the surface, these all seem to fit. We find out later that he is completely wrong on all counts. He was overlooking the true way he fit into the story because he was trying to force a more conventional interpretation. Meanwhile, Story herself was unable to tell him he was wrong, because she is here as the representation of a work of art or a story--she can't tell us how to interpret her, she can only give us clues to nudge us towards inspiration. So the film is reminding us to view art/stories/movies with the eyes of a child, to drink in their wonder again in hopes that we might be inspired. (the old asian lady wouldn't tell Paul Giamatti the story unless she viewed him as harmless, like a child--the one dude said he wanted to believe in the story like a kid again). It reminds us that our destinies may be something that we did not anticipate.

As ironic as this statement is he could have brought that across in a less egotistical manner like making the critic so obviously a prat and not making everyone behave in a ridiculous manner(to a point). Also not making himself seem like Jesus would help. He doesn't have to put a neon sign up either explaining it but getting a message across kind've requires the audience to have a touch point and it's hard to not get bogged down with all the random crazy addition and poor acting.

I remember watching this film when I was younger, I was intrigued, and then afterwards I went to any swimming pool I could find with great expectations. Great film. There was another aspect of the mythology that I loved, the fact that there were false duplicates, it created a lot of tension, because finding the right combo of people before time runs out, it scared the shit out of me, once again, I was a child. Watching things from this perspective makes films beautiful, and that's how I've left it, I've never seen the film again, and it is still hauntingly beautiful because I left it there, I left it in the limbo of a vague memory and almost a dream sequence.

So in the same way I defend the Star Wars prequels, you defend the M. Night films that most people hate.
@robcain88659 жыл бұрын
The Star Wars prequels aren't absolutely awful films with no redeeming qualities, but they were definitely jarring for those who watched the originals. It seems the fans anger has turned into an effort to wash away the bad taste of the prequels. Even the new Star Wars Battlefront ignores the Clone Wars despite it having potential for some awesome multiplayer battles. As for M Night, he comes off as a bit arrogant based on how I've seen him act. First casting himself in Lady in the Water and then calling The Last Airbender "the most culturally diverse movie ever made" in an interview with TIME. That's really asking for a backlash which only got worse when the film came out in 2010.
@AxioProductions9 жыл бұрын
The prequels had good ideas on paper and potential, but it suffered from bad directions and script. The clone wars saga was cool, seeing Yoda in action, and Darth Plaguis novel explained from how midichlorian work to Palpatine's rise to power and how everything lead up to the prequels perfectly.

What I personally loved about this movie was the fact that you didn't know a whole lot about the blue world. It was supposed to be based off of Legends and stories passed down from generation to generation. It even said in the beginning of the movie Men had forgotten and could no longer listen. I found it pretty cool that you really wouldn't know how the blue world really was so you could leave it up to interpretation in your own mind. I watched this movie is a teenager when it first came out and thought it was absolutely amazing. To this day I still watch it and still cry when I watch the movie, because seeing these characters come together to see there is something more to our world than the mundane is just simply amazing. The cinematic score is superb, and even the quirky acting of some of these characters is on point. I feel like in order to enjoy this movie you have to really open your mind, if you're not willing to do that you're not going to enjoy it.

This film is meant to be a fairytale hence the beginning with the animated story... This is an understated film which is magical and beautiful and Paul giamatti is amazing. The hate for shyamalan is bollocks, the happening is the only truly bad film he's made and I personally didn't like after Earth. Stop being sheep and hating him just because everyone else finds it fun to mock him

I fell in love with the film because of that and it just breaks my heart that people hate this movie just because it's fun to ride the hate wagon for M. Night. I just hope that this premise can be brought back and done better. Saw a comment on Nostalgia Critic's video that this concept, when adjusted, would be perfect for an Anime. Kind of like an Ah! My Goddess story but with Water Nymphs and Monsters instead of Goddesses and Devils.

Don't generalize my dislike for Shyamalan. A lot of people agreeing that he's a bad director doesn't mean that everyone who thinks that way is on the bandwagon. Most stereotypes have roots in truth. The guy just isn't good, and neither is this movie. In my opinion.

+stephanie wasling A lot of people hate him for The Last Airbender, and while I don't think anyone could have made a truly great single movie from a whole season of a series, at least not a movie as good as said whole season of the source material (just too much going on), he certainly could have done a better job. People aren't forgiving when it comes to things they love, they might be a little to harsh in such a case, but it doesn't mean they are sheepish. I've seen this movie numerous times and for me it has really taken on a character of its own. I enjoy the offbeat tone and the sort of freestyle "as if telling the story off the top of your head" flow that it has. And of course the music is just phenomenal. Paul Giamatti gives an incredibly earnest performance. The entire cast seems to just be letting loose and enjoying themselves and the movie itself is just nuts but I think that's what makes it fun. It's also incredibly heartfelt and sincere, and has one of the most beautiful final shots I've ever seen in a movie. Chris Martin of Coldplay said that the song "Yellow" doesn't really provide any deep meaning... but what it does do is evoke a feeling. Whether its intentional or not, some things just make you feel warm to your core and Lady in the Water is one of the few movies of which I can say that is absolutely the case, at least for me.

I don't think this went over anyone's head. It's obvious what the film is saying: critics don't know anything, Shyamalan's a genius, and children are pure and innocent and we should be more like them, the problem being that only one of those thing is even sometimes true. For a film about storytelling, it doesn't know how to tell one. It writes itself into corners and then Paul Giamatti asks the Asian mother and daughter to explain the magical exception to the rule that will let things move forward again. It's like writing a Superman story where Superman is tied up in Kryptonite chains while Lex Luthor is about to destroy Metropolis, only to suddenly have the voice of Jor El come in and say, "actually, if an eclipse happens on my son's birthday, kryptonite will become a life-giving power source...have I not mentioned this before?" and suddenly it's all hunky-dory.
@Gouthamedara4 жыл бұрын
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks I would say critics and children are on the mark. As for Shyamalan, I dont think he tried to say he is a genius lol. His acting seemed totally fine to me. If we watch it with open mind its not bad at all. At least not all the flak he gets

From the very first viewing in the theater I thought this movie was absolutely AMAZING! I wept! As a long time M Night fan I personally consider this his masterpiece! Absolute perfection in my opinion! The most tight film of his. This is THE most misunderstood and underrated movie of all-time! The themes of finding one's place in the world, of the wickedness of mankind as a whole, and also the beauty of mankind I found deeply touching. The scene after the party where the plan has fallen apart and they can't understand why everything is going so wrong is the key scene! And directly brings to mind the Biblical verse about not leaning on your own understanding but trusting the Lord and giving him the control and just having faith. Faith is a recurring theme in his films and one of the main reasons I enjoy them. Some time before seeing this film my pastor had done a very beautiful sermon on spiritual gifts and how we should let the Lord reveal our spiritual gifts to us in his own time rather than trying to figure out what gift he has given us. He related stories about knowing pastors who had been preaching for decades and then coming to the conclusion later in life that teaching the word was not their spiritual gift after all. This goes back to not leaning on our own understanding. It is only when they stop trying to control the situation themselves in the film that they understand who the true interpreter, and healer and so forth are. And like many Biblical characters Cleveland is reluctant to accept the role God has given to him. This movie is SO beautiful, SO moving, and SO inspiring to me! I cannot state enough how near and dear to my heart this film is! They mismarketed this one from the very start because all studios care about is the bottom line so they marketed it as another M Night thriller/suspense flick to try and draw in the audience. This film has more of a kinship to Chronicles Of Narnia than it does Signs or The Sixth Sense. And the backlash from disappointed fans over The Village was another reason this film isn't held in higher regard. Had this followed Signs instead of The Village I have no doubt it would have performed very well financially!

This is always my answer for "what movie do you think is underrated?" My favourite part of this movie is the very last scene. Earlier in the movie when the critic talks about "why do people stand around and talk in the rain" Paul Giamatti's response is "Purification, starting anew." Cut to the very last scene of the movie, Paul Giamatti and Story are standing in the rain, and he says, "Thank you for saving my life." His life is now starting anew. I think it's beautiful poetry.

a. Imo the craziness of this story is what made it unique. I watched this film after the other Siamalan films that came before it. And the fact that they all had a revelation at the end, made me think that this time again, the story teller is effing with as throughout the whole time watching this. I expected to see a twist in the end telling us that all this was a joke or made up (like in The Village) and another part of me (the inner kid's part) begged for all this to be true and come ton an epic closure. Not revealing this fairy 'world/universe' at all, actually worked for me. Cause I did not know what to believe or how to view this film till the end. b. The fact that 'Story' was an other worldly creature, a fairy of some sorts made the actress' performance even better in my eyes. Because it kept intriguing me. I could not connect with her while I wanted it so much! I felt like the main character of this film, who was willing to give everything to help her, without even knowing her.

Hello Stuckmann. I'm the one who helped you get a ticket to M. Night Shyamalan's panel at Comic Con back in July. I spoke to him as you did. I think The Village is his best movie, and someone else said the same at the panel. As for Lady In The Water, I love the mix of humor and fantasy in it, and talked about it in my own video about M. Night's movies. The critic clearly represents the many viewers who don't believe that anyone can be original or creative anymore, and this movie is exactly that, as you said. I also really liked Bryce Dallas Howard in both films, and I told her that when I met her two years ago. I'm looking forward to The Visit, and your thoughts on it when you share.

The largest issue that I had with this movie is the fact that Shyamalan put himself in the role of the person whose work will change the world for the better because it is great. Also, people won't understand his work at first because it's SO great. It seems like a huge ego trip on his part. I do actually agree somewhat with your point on the film critic. It is definitely does seem like some lighthearted jabbing, but I also have some difficulty in believing that because of how it seems like Shyamalan is using this movie as a way to talk about how great he is.

Great video, Chris. Nice to have people kinda defending this one, but I do disagree one one thing. Just because the "rest of the world" will see a movie (or work of art, or music, or anything) does not mean it shouldn't be made. It may be personal but there are people who love this movie (myself included). Not appealing to a mass audience, in my opinion, is not and should not be a requirement for a filmmaker. There're definitely things to consider from a production and financial standpoint, but if someone is willing to get behind the artist and let him make his small-audience-minded art, I say more power to him. There may only be a small audience that can appreciate what Shyamalan tried to do with this movie (as he was very aware of and parodied in the screenplay), but I do not think it is unfortunate that the rest of the world had to endure it. Although I suppose you could chalk that up to bad marketing, since a lot more people probably saw this movie than would enjoy it on a conceptual level.

The reason why I hated the stupid critic death thing in Lady in the Water wasn't because I can't take a joke, but because the joke was a) really stupid and hack - as you said yourself it's been done over and over forever b) incredibly self serving and, alongside casting himself as the hero, makes him look like an egomaniac c) it wasn't compelling in the slightest to me, I did not care about that character and his death meant nothing to the story.

I'm a filmmaker (a writer/producer in LA) and I have been a sub of yours for many years and a big fan of what you do. Very excited for SHELBY OAKS btw. And I don't think I have ever disagreed with you on any of your reviews, past (like this one) and present. That said, for some reason this and your review of THE VILLAGE popped up in my feeds today. And I have to disagree with you about some of your takes on both M. Night past films (not all your takes in this video and in The Village review), but some. For me, The Village was terrific and Lady in the Water was magical to me. Absurd, but who cares if it captures the imagination and gave us an original story. I also am partial to this film as I went to see this the night before production started on my first movie back in 2006, so I was just so excited the following morning and this film made me feel like the world was special. All that said, I do agree with some of your points in this video and The Village - like in your review of The Village, you made an excellent point that Ivy should have battled it out with the creature BEFOFE we got the William Hurt flashback tell her (and us) that the creatures weren't real. And then it could have shown the face of Adrian Brody in the hole he fell into. Excellent point. Anyway, I just wanted to add my two cents. Again, love what you do and always watch your videos. Be well!

That feel about right. I enjoyed some parts but for me a lot of the bad outweighed the good. My issue with the critic character is that Yes, I can tell he was meant to be a joke character and his whole presence in the film was meant to be a joke about criticism. However I don't think it was a joke told very well. I actually liked the critic, I thought he was funny. I would probably enjoy reading his reviews to see how over the top negative he'd get about movies. And I also much preferred his interpretation of the events of the story and what character would play which role. But whatever. It's a mess of a film, but it's still enjoyable to watch.

Speaking of your statement about reviewing older films - have you thought about picking a director and doing a series of reviews of their films? My first thought is Andrew Nicol (Gattaca, Lord of War, The Truman Show) and Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Count of Monte Cristo, and Tristan and Isolde). I feel like what most people miss is the messages of the film. It's presented in a fairytale/storybook kind of way. I am always a deep thinker so that is what I hone in on in stories and film. I love the fairytale aspect of it, it felt like I was a kid again. I felt the story of the movie was about this character named Story who comes into the life of a man with a tragic past. Fear is presented in several ways and fear plays a role for several reasons. Fear of not knowing your place or role in the world, fear of knowing what you're suppose to do but don't think you'll be good at it, fear of dealing with the past, fear of moving forward; and ultimately, overcoming those fears through use of the gifts you have and maybe knew you had or gifts you didn't know you had. Very deep topics discussed through a child-like fairytale.

I think the exposition scenes were some of the most hilarious and well done scenes in the movie. He really turned a negative into a positive in this movie imo. Also, it is a fairy tale for children being told to adults, so throughout the movie characters, like the viewers, need to suspend their disbelief and just take what they see and hear for fact without too much questioning the logic or science of it. I think the movie is a solid B+

I admittedly have a “bad habit” of walking into each movie with no preconceived expectations. I think too many moviegoers go to a movie with their minds made up about how it should be and are inevitably disappointed when it doesn’t fulfill their their preconceived expectations. I say this is a “bad habit” because it results in me generally liking every movie I see for what it is. There are obviously some movies that absolutely stunning, and others that underwhelm me, but I don’t ever feel the need to bash them.

The only thing that would save a ridiculous story like this one would be pure originality, which was never the strongsuit of Shyamalan. I can ignore the fact that he uses the building which has people from all colors and nationalities as metaphore of America just like " Million Dollar Hotel" but if your main character is saved by "Gwaihir" from "Lord of the Rings" while being chased by "G'mork" from "Neverending Story", I wouldn't call that story original. Also, if he has a problem with movie critics he should arrange boxing matches like Uwe Boll and duke it out like a man, not let them getting eaten by wolves in a movie where he plays a prophet.

Maybe I am too simple minded? Or maybe I don't look at movies the same way, but I LOVE THIS MOVIE. To me the whole Narf story was great, and how he was told about it was even greater. Mind you the best part of my childhood was lying in bed listening to my father telling stories, and I grew up with a huge love for fantasy and mythology. So I do not consider it "dumb"... I was kindda hurt by you saying so... but I do understand why you would say that. Yeah... a good deal of this movie is cheesy but I thought it clever. I completely loved the twist with the tenants cause I was disappointed they thought the adult was the reader of messages when to me it was obvious it was the kid, cause he saw more than what other people could in everyday life. I also liked the critic and his death... not that I don't like critics or criticism. It's more like I saw him as a clear representation of those bitter people who don't see the magic in life... And... I really liked Brice... Bryce? Uhm... Dang it... I really suck at names. Story, I think I understood her, how she wasn't supposed to tell others about her background, her world, how she was scared and unsure of herself, I really liked how fragile and dainty she looked and acted, yeah, sure, she was a damsel in distress and not a rough and tough woman, but I liked her that way in the story cause her weakness made others braver, stronger and that was great... Anyway... this video is sooo old I really doubt you'll ever read this comment, I guess I just wanted to say something since this time I disagree in a lot of things you said and I usually agree with you like 100% so... anyway... thanks for the video :) and Im totally a fan of yours.
