To me, the opening was the best part of the movie. Yes, CGIndy was a little distracting, but the stunts, staging, and action were classic Indiana Jones. I loved the music and how everything wrapped up that it could have just slapped "The End" after it, and I would have been satisfied. After it was done, I was ready to walkout of the theater saying, "That was great!" It felt like an Indiana Jones short film, and I loved it.

For me it's a trilogy that ends with them riding into the sunset at the end of the Last Crusade. And I wholly agree with Chris on how binary criticism (of anything) has become in the age of social media. Something is either a 10/10 masterpiece or absolutely terrible while in reality 99% of films and TV shows falls in the massive grey zone of that spectrum.

@@Outpost31Research Yeah, a lot of that comes from studios using VFX and post production as a concepting stage AFTER the shoot, or high-ups changing their mind about what they want during post. The best stuff uses digital extensions, which is where they'll build as much of a set as possible and then digitally extend it. David Fincher actually uses this technique A LOT, and you never even notice it. But constantly "touching up" stuff with CGI very rapidly deteriorates the compositing because the artists get less and less time to make sure it looks right against a deadline, so an over-reliance on "just doing it in post" puts the whole movie on the back foot.

The single biggest thing that encapsulates Chris’ problem with critics these days is the popularity of Rotten Tomatoes as the fundamental judge of a movie’s quality. Critics are now valued, not for their individual reviews and the quality of their individual experiences with the film but for their collective agreement over whether a film is good instead of bad. It’s a system that benefits films that satisfy everyone over niche or experimental films that may not be for everyone but will absolutely blow away the ones they will be for

Pairing indie with a woman was always how it was done, creating some distance that shame make him a deadbeat dad gives room for relationship growth without three full force is t thinking he was neglectful, and he's so old now, and a younger partner is necessary, having the family relationship instantly rules out any potential romance which would be inappropriate

I'm not saying that happened with this film, but I do think the fact that Chris felt it necessary to spend 5-6 mins attributing the feeling of disappointment for an ill-conceived and unnecessary entry in a classic franchise is somehow mostly the audience's fault because of the inherent hope and expectation that a new entry will recapture the magic of the older films, is in itself a little disappointing and disingenuous. There are plenty of examples of legacy sequels that have been embraced and adored by their fanbases that didnt need these excuses and I think it's a little cynical for filmmakers to want all the built in excitement and fan expectation that comes with these properties and that may lead to a big hit while also wanting none of the criticism when their efforts swing and miss.

This is absolutely correct. Chris put out a video a while back explaining he wouldn't be doing negative reviews now that he is a filmmaker. Or at least do as many. I think that restriction absolutely nueters his impact as a critic. If you can't critique a film and point out its negatives without politics or personal feelings getting in the way, you should probably move on. As much as I like Chris, this takes away so much from his channel, and I don't think it is necessary.

You said my thoughts exactly! "There are plenty of examples of legacy sequels that have been embraced and adored by their fanbases" Well said! For example Top Gun Maverick The Wolverine Logan Tron Legacy Mad Max Fury Road Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3 Chris is wrong here. A sequel or prequel can absolutely live up to expectations or even exceed them. When the audience is put first, when the customer is put first, when the fanbase is put first. When the directors and producers try their best to make an entertaining movie without destroying the source material, updating the source material or talking down to the audience. I would add. A movie critic's job isn't to give bonus points to a film just because they sympathize with the director. It's to criticize or praise the movie based on if it's good or not.

Hey Chris, similar sentiments to what Indiana Jones means to me. I'm almost 40 years old and the first movie I'd ever see in theatres was Last Crusade in '89 when I lived in Greece; I went with my parents when I was only 5 years old. We moved from Greece to Canada the next year. I took my parents to see Dial of Destiny last night and relived our experience 34 years ago... when Indy wanted to stay in the past, we all started to tear up.. and the waterworks really went off when Marion came onscreen at the end. We're a Polish family with a strong sentiment for our time in Greece... Dial of Destiny felt like it was written for us. We all loved it.

The takeaway I had from the trailers is that visually the film just looks far too reliant upon CGI. It has that bright shiny HDR look and it just doesn’t vibe, tonally, with the original trilogy. I had the same issue with Crystal Skull - the set backdrops all looked saturated with cgi flourishes and a lot of the action set pieces looked like they were shot on a sound stage with tons of glaring green screen and special effects. It lost the practical charm of the original trilogy which had physical stunts and real locations. I haven’t seen the movie yet so I’ll withhold judgment but I feel like they really dropped the ball simply from a visual perspective. Best thing they could have done was strip it back to a more modestly budgeted, practical effects reliant action adventure movie… the very fact that this film cost $300 million dollars to produce kinda says it all. It’s just not in the spirit of Indiana Jones.

I like how it follows the Indiana Jones movie rule that he always accidentally leads the bad guys to the mugguffin for them, isn't able to stop them from getting it, then it kills them. I actually liked Helena, since the plot didn't try to portray her as perfect or morally superior. She's imperfect and the other characters fucking notice, and it gets them into sticky situations. Her character growth into a more caring person is a bit rushed toward the end, but not too noticable, and her self-serving nature in the beginning makes her deception of the Nazi's very believable, imo. Plus, in spite of what people are saying, the plot doesn't overshadow Jones in favor of Shaw at all, they're both given their due.

Indiana Jones is my all time favorite fictional character and after re-binge watching all of the previous films I can 100% say that I preferred Crystal Skull over DOD. The obvious reason is CS was directed by Spielberg and it felt more like a Indy film and regardless of how you feel about the ending; it was not as bonkers as DOD wild ending. The prologue of DOD was the best part because it was literally a love letter to the final chase sequence in the classic films. Overall though I really really liked DOD and I don’t feel I’m going to get a film that hit me like this did but then again Indiana is my all time favorite character and Ford is my all time favorite actor.

I keep hearing reviewers say "don't go in expecting a great film", but why shouldn't we have higher expectations for films? A mediocre Indie film is a bad Indie film if the original trilogy set the bar so much higher. The problems aren't so much the direction as the writing being a mess and a poor excuse for a sequel and characters that behave more like modern politically correct nags instead of how people would have behaved in the 60s. It's not good writing and I think we should expect better.

@@ThorfinnSonofThors892 There is nothing binary about what I said. It's not all or nothing. Some things were done well, but a lot of aspects of this film were not. Writing is important. If you don't have good script to begin with, don't spend 300 million making a film. The film didn't need to be made. The Last Crusade should have been the end and clearly was intended to be. If you cannot make a worthy sequel that is at least as good as say Temple of Doom, which isn't asking a lot, then I don't see the point. Disney has no idea what Indiana Jones is about. It's upbeat action based on old serial television, not a depressing melodrama where the action hero is clearly much too old. Even worse is the script which at its worst is juvenile and embarrassingly bad at points..The new characters are not likable at all either. I think you are the one who is drinking the cool aid. Disney has not made a good film in the last ten years or so. This company is obviously creatively bankrupt and soon to be financially as well.

If yall want an honest review from a non shill, wait until red letter media releases one. Unfortunately I beleive Chris Stuckman prefers special media access over giving an unbiased report on the quality of a film

I know, I can't watch these reviews anymore, I feel like he's being dishonest, or scared to give an honest review now.

Me, a subscriber since years. After your "Rings of Power" review i almost unsubscribed, since it is really not good and you praised it like a gun was hold to your head and after it finished you didn't say anything about this mess. Now after this review i finally unsubscribed since your professional opinion is no good anymore, you just hope to not piss off the wrong people by what you say and have no critical view of movies anymore. Shame, i really valued your reviews.

I’m right there with Chris on his love for IJ and his first three movies. I loved STAR WARS but not like everyone else did, but Indiana Jones was MY STAR WARS. Though, like STAR WARS fans, I have been let down by everything that followed the original trilogy. I will still always have those movies, but I had always hoped for better.

Don't you DARE speak for all of us Star Wars fans. I loved Episodes 7-9. 1-3 suck ass but 7-9 KICKED ASS! And I love a lot of SW content outside Episodes 4-9. And I am not alone, not by a long shot.
