The biggest problem with the 214 BC stuff is they didn't spend enough time there. It seems like they must have cut stuff there. It seems like such a huge set piece so did they really do all that just for 5 minutes of the movie. I would have liked to have seen more of Indy's reaction to being there to build on the idea he wanted to stay behind. They spend the entire movie getting there & then it's barely touched on. They could have easily cut 15-20 minutes from the middle of the movie & spent some of that time in 214 BC.

Yes I would have liked to have seen the wonder in Indy's eyes as he takes it all in.. And then rather than Helena pinching him out he stars to circum to his injuries and then she realizes she has to take him back to save his life.

Me too. I think that moment landed most with people who love history. Other people were too busy rolling their eyes and groaning at time travel, while I had goosebumps because that is something that I have dreamed about seeing all my life, just like Indy. For all the talk about the length of the movie, I wish we had maybe three or four minutes more in Ancient Sicily.

In 'Raiders' Indy _actively_ saves the lives of Marion and himself by knowing not to look at the ghosts from the ark. I like that a lot. Without him and his knowledge they would both die.

I get where’s he’s coming from as I prefer his more active role in last crusade. But I remember watching raiders as a kid & it feeling so intense that Indy was captive & had to be there for the opening of the ark like oh shit what’s he gonna do he’s literally caught by the enemy. & then I had to close my eyes with Indy because I was too scared to see what happened to the nazi’s. So it was kind of an interactive experience. Idk how it plays out for an older mind though, haven’t seen raiders since I was like 5

Karen Allen herself recently told Entertainment Weekly that she regrets how small Marion’s role is in this movie. She wishes Marion had a bigger role in the movie. She wishes Henry took Marion on his new adventure with him.

I’m kinda happy she wasn’t there. She felt sidelined in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and not as prominently focused like she was in Raiders of the Lost Ark. However I love how she’s prominently mentioned in Dial of Destiny and how her reconciliation with Indy lines exactly how Raiders panned out. Felt like a journey of pain which was destined to reach a poetic mark. This is just me. I can understand Karren’s disappointment but I’m least happy she was in the ending seeing Indy and not finding his remains in a museum dated thousands of years ago.

I liked a lot of this movie, but I also disliked some moments and decisions they made. What professor of arkeology and history wouldn't want to go back in time and see it with their own eyes? He already kinda got a taste of it when he met the knight in the last crusade. And I bet a lot of fans of history would agree. But I get if people didn't like that aspect.

I agree, I feel like from a plot standpoint in a random movie it could be corny, but for Indiana’s perspective it’s cool and understandable to put in the final film. (I just think they could’ve done more with it. And personal opinion, the historical setting they chose was more boring to me but if it was in ancient Egypt it would’ve been cooler and more of a Raiders tone.)

For the ending, I'm more surprised how they shot Indy who is an 80 year old man and then he just stayed like that for like 30 minutes, THEN Helena punches him unconscious, THEN he goes all the way back to the present and to a hospital without dying. At the same time, a CIA agent in her prime years gets shot at pretty much the same place and dies in like a single minute.

I also found a lot of the action scenes, though well directed, we're still a little too VFX heavy. There were a few times where I was like "They had a huge stunt team and budget, did that vehicle crash have to be CGI?"

@@MrXabungle I guess the problem is, that because more and more CGI is being used, less and less stunt experts remain, since the demand for them is less and less, so less new blood as old people retire from stunt work. which in turn make using stunt more expensive.

Every modern movie today relies too much on heavy CGI one of the main things that doesn't pull me into a movie or even make it realistic,look back on the first 3 indy movies,real locations,great set peices and using real vehicles for one mainly thinkin of last crusade the tank scene,the bike chase scene, directors are either lazy or they don't have the passion or want to invest meaningful money into a project like its previous films to even come close to them.Alot come out looking too cartoony for me just my opinion.

I think this movie has one of my favourite very minor character: The pilot in the third act. Like this guy (who has no name) is asleep in his own plane, completely unaware that some N4zis stole an older WW2 plane in the runway and are flying it, then some kid starts flying his own plane to chase after it. Not long after he's waking up, he ends up in Ancient Rome where the Romans are attacking in Sicily (in a huge battle told in history books mind you) while his plane is also attacked because everyone thinks it's a dragon. Then his plane lands, he sees Archimedes talking to some other folks you've never seen before, but apparently the kid does knows, one of them punches the other, and you all have to fly away to that weird portal again in the sky again in order to get back home. And the best part is: No one will believe him. Like what do you do after all of that mess is over with and you end up back in your own time frame? Write a book? Tell your friends?

I predicted how they’d write out Shia LaBeouf’s character for this movie and it was almost exactly what we got. And not only that, but you do genuinely feel bad for Indy and how it negatively impacted his marriage with Marion and what he wanted to do once he had the complete Dial. It also makes his reasoning for wanting to stay behind in Ancient Sicily understandable but at the same time, Helena was absolutely right to knock him out and get him back to his own time.

As a Crystal Skull fan, I'm not happy at all that they killed off Mutt, they built this happy ending and threw it away just for making this sequel, but I have to admit this tragedy works to justify Indy's current state, when he remembers Mutt, all that sadness and pain that Harrison crudely expresses made me cry, I love Mutt, so those of us who love this character feel the same pain as Indy.

In a movie that wants to bash you with how old and sad Indy is now, it was so nice to see a returning character doing well for themselves and loving life.

I think the real reason why Raiders final act works with a captive Indiana Jones is because the story was building up to a point where Indiana has to surrender to forces beyond his control. It's a very powerful scene because of it. I also have no problems with Indy being captured in the last of Dial of Destiny. I saw Indy in this movie as taking on the role of Marion from Raiders. In your other video you mentioned the reprisal of the "what doesn't hurt" scene from Raiders, but it's important to note that Indy was saying Marion's lines, not his own. Indy was also the one forcing Helena to bring him along, just like Marion did after the bar fight in Nepal. When you read Helena's character as being an analog of the roguish Indiana from Raiders and Temple, you start to notice how the film has completely reversed Indiana Jones role with Marion's. Similarly, Indiana shows Helena that there are things more important in life than fame and fortune, just the same way Marion did.

The big difference with Indy being tied up at the end of Raiders and being tied up for most of the finale in this movie, is that he didn’t rely on any sidekick to come and rescue him. In Raiders, he was still able to be the hero and work out what needed doing in order to save himself and Marion. So no, it’s not an accurate comparison

The final scene in Raiders was a spiritual battle that didn’t need physical action to be saved. All he needed was cumulative experience, and brain power to save themselves. There is also a running theme with God’s light through out the movie.

I was theorizing during the finale when Indy and Jurgen Voller would go back to 1939 Germany, older Indy would come across younger Indy (Like a Back to the future part 2 scenario) and they both have to stop Voller's plan from coming to fruition. But then I read James Mangold didn't want to do that because it would be too predictable. Understandable. I couldn't predict where the film would go near the end, but I'm so happy it ended on a better note than Erasing Indiana Jones from every timeline. It was also wonderful to hear that Theme one final time in the theater.

Big agree. As the movie went on and on, I realized that the movie was about chasing the dial and that, like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the at i fact wouldn’t come into play until the end. Also -SPOILERS-the way things were handled, Indiana’s presence in 214 BCE didn’t manipulate the timeline other than Archimedes getting Voller’s watch.

If he thought that was gonna be too predictable then don’t do time travel at all. They could’ve done something like the first 20 minutes where Indy has to search for a lost treasure stolen by the Nazi’s during World War 2 which ends up with him fighting against retired Nazi’s and maybe Russians who looted the Nazi’s treasure post war. They also should’ve brought back Shortround or recast Mutt instead of introducing Wombat who really holds back the film.

He loves archeology so much that having him stay in the past like you said wouldn’t affect anything. It’s that old time travel effect if you die as old man in the past, your younger self in the future disappears?

No kidding! My buddies and I thought that there would be some kind of face reveal, like half of his face was missing and he had a mask or something. But nope, he's completely fine. Then again, with him looking like nothing happened, it made me wonder if he had already gone back in time. I think if he had already "won" by getting the FULL dial in 1945, and then Indy had to right the wrong of that past, it would have made for a much more interesting third act. Instead of going back in time to the Romans, he finds the scattered pieces of the dial that have been hidden from the Nazis and goes back to the train ride as old Indy and stops Mads Mickelson. Maybe then there would be a theme to the movie, like rewriting history is never a good thing or something like that.

But the suspension of disbelief gets difficult when something as relatable as a fall or being struck doesn't have any weight or realism behind it. I doubt you've ever met someone who actively practices an ancient religion in the congos, but you've hit your head on a cabinet door or ceiling.

I had to put myself together after the film. We forget that Indy has dedicated his life to the preservation of history. And here we get to see him see what it was really like. He was able to meet one of his heroes. And he wanted to stay. He’s like “you know what? This wouldn’t be such a bad death” The end with Marion as well. This was the most emotional I’ve gotten in an Indiana Jones. So yeah, I was difficult to talk to for 20 minutes

I'm amazed how poorly this movie is doing financially considering how big the previous four were, but I guess the landscape of blockbuster cinema has changed even more dramatically since 2008 than it had between 1989 and 2008. When Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out, the MCU was in its cradle and The Dark Knight wasn't even out yet. Crazy how Disney's own MCU has played a part in the shift that doomed movies like this and Solo. It's like the company is cannibalizing itself.

Think the bigger culprit was how panned the last one was, then there was bad word of mouth a month before the thing came out, giving lots of time for word to spread. Fact is, most people didn't have any desire to see another Indiana Jones movie. Ford is too old, fan base is too old too, thing was DOA from the get go, a bad idea poorly executed. I'm surprised anybody thought this was gonna be a success, frankly.

A lot of movies aren't doing as well as expected right now. I think covid really changed the landscape. People aren't just automatically gonna pop into a movie theater for anything anymore. Also a lot of smaller theaters and some larger ones are downsizing. Where I used to live there was a Regal right down the street from me. I would go to a movie almost every weekend and being a regal member ypu could get a couple free here and there. Last time I was in the area- pretty recently- I saw that that theater had closed. Idk. Its harder to make money i feel off many of these films when people know you can stream it in a few months. I definitely will see this but on stream.

I agree having Indy tied up for the majority of the finale is a let down, but it's worth it for the strength of the story. We need Indy there to build the incredible tension "i dont know where we're going but it sure as hell aint 1939" is exhilarating. The look on the Villan's face as he realises Indy is right is priceless. We couldnt have had this moment had Indy not being helplessly tied up. Having said that he didnt have to be shot to be captured. And he could have escaped to battle the Villans in the plane once in Anicent Greece, causing them to crash and Indy to make daring rescue and escape before plane exploded. But i still love the ending. Biggest surprise ive had in cinema since Infinity War.

About the ending of 'Raiders': Indy had to be tied with Marion because he wouldn´t blow the Ark in the previous scene with the bazooka (as the archaeologyst he is, he wasn't supposed to be). What we see is the full power of the Ark getting rid of the n4zis. So, Indy was wise enough to tell Marion no to look, but we as the audience could watch it (without dying). Very nice writing, Indy didn´t only phisically fight a lot of them, but was clever enough to survive at the end.

Her having to hit him over the head to get him back as opposed to his father just convincing him to "let go" just makes sense. Last Crusade saw himstill very hopeful for life and everything else in the beginning, middle, and end. He still had something worth going home for. Dial of Destiny on the other hand saw a beaten and mostly defeated Indy, between his marriage being in shambles, son dead in the war, retirement from teaching, and a world changing around him to the point of being unrecognizable, of course it would take an extreme measure to get him to leave actual history to go back home.

I actually just watched the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles that was about Indy coming home from Paris after WWI had ended, and there was a bit of drama involving how Indy didn’t even tell his father that he went to go fight in the war, most likely a purposeful way of irritating Henry Jones Sr. The fact history repeats itself with Mutt but ends with him dying instead of returning home like Indy did break my heart. I feel like if you take that into account, you could interpret there being a bit of survivor’s guilt on Indy’s part.

People need to stop comparing the films. Harrison Ford is much better in the Indiana Jones movies than star wars. Plus, Indy being all alone and losing his son makes sense. The man has essentially been a lone wolf since the beginning and he's never been unhappy with that. Sure he had a couple of close friends and some casual hook-ups but he never lived the traditional family life, and part of that is due to the complicated relationship with his dad. For me the movie unfortunately failed to find any valid or let alone artistic reason to re-open the story of Indiana Jones. Mangold and the team try their best and deliver decently, but the movie ultimately just demonstrates through contrast the genius of Spielberg and his outrageously well directed blockbuster magic. Barely anything in this felt as focused and organic as the moments Spielberg brought to life in the original trilogy. A pure studio mandated sequel that can't come up with a reason for its own existence. At least Harrison Ford seemed to have enjoyed his time.

I feel that the main issue in this movie, aside from the points you mentioned, is that there is too much fat and it is not that well handled. Teddy and Mason (the CIA agent) were afterthoughts in terms of character use and development but the film still spends a good combined 15 to 20 minutes with them. Such time could have either been cut for a better paced movie or realocated to focus on Helena and Indy. Their relationship had too many "tell don't show moments" and that is a shame because they are both good characters.

It wasn’t specifically when she knocks him out to bring him back to the future that annoyed me, it was more Wombat’s character writing throughout the whole movie. Her character is so wildly unlikable and there’s really no reason for them to be at odds the whole movie, and her character choices don’t feel earned, they felt pretty random and cheap. The other thing was how Indy didn’t hardly even react when his friend died right in front of him due to his own actions. They just moved on from that so quickly. Overall it wasn’t a bad film tho, I enjoyed it in theaters.

I was expecting Helena's arc to have a full-circle moment to spot her Dad and that would give her some closure (Kinda like Indy & his dad in The Last Crusade). His punches were so slow and it made the character of Indy almost seem like a joke because we root for him as a suave badass who is smart and sometimes just gets plain lucky. Destiny brings him down to earth and he tries to block and throw punches unsuccessfully. He moves slow and is tired. If Indy had had to fight that huge dude, he would have had to have electrocuted him or shoot him or something. I think Chris is wrong to say he would have like 80 year old Indy to fight that huge young villain. It would have been like watching his son swing with monkeys. I wish we had gotten actual trains and stunts more than green screen, which is what helps make the original trilogy so timeless, but this was a good story. Much better than Crystal Skull. That ending is terrific.

I love how this movie reflects on what Indy has done in the previous 4 movies, whether it’s through a callback of an action moment or the callback to a particular character. This was a movie not just about the passage/weight/effect of time but also a resurgence by finally doing something he never really was able to do previously. Which was to literally make your mark on history/mythology/religion. I also noticed through each different action they are showing a different element of what makes Indiana Jones the man he is. From mounting that horse in an Apollo 11/Anti-Vietnam parade to the final shot where he snags that fedora. He may be a man out of time but through the eyes of people like Helena, Sallah, and Marian he is needed more than ever. Theres a lot of good in this movie. It may not feel as black/white like the original trilogy but I think that’s the point. It’s an effective coda to the overarching character study for Indy beginning in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”

There were other things they could have done with Marion and Mutt: She could have been visiting relatives or working at some kind of mission or whatever; Mutt could have simply been living his life in another state, or he could have still enlisted against his parents' wishes (much as Indy did in WWI), but still be off fighting, with his future uncertain. Speaking of Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, remember when he got off the front lines of WWI to be a spy largely because he spoke perfect German? It seems like the filmmakers don't know this, because he NEVER speaks German in any of these films, despite many times it would be very useful! I wondered if Ford just couldn't be bothered to learn lines in a foreign language, but this movie shows him speaking ancient Greek, so...

I still believe that the best sequels are probably Cobra Kai, they pay homage to the previous stories, they respect character development and the films that came before, and most importantly, they respect the lore and implement flashbacks in a meaningful way. If Hollywood took some pointers from Cora Kai and used this in all of their 'sequel/passing of the torch' films like the Star Wars sequels, the Matrix Resurrections, Indiana Jones, etc. Fans would be pleased, but most of the time, they end in such a drab, anti-climactic, and dull way that fans walk away from a beloved series with a bad taste in their mouth.

Yes, Indy thinking he had nothing to live for in the present is a very real, very humanizing thing for a 70s character who's lost his only child and is estranged from his wife. He also assumes he's dying. Makes perfect sense that he'd be "wrong" for wanting to stay and witness some of history in his final days. I don't get why people think that's a terrible flaw of the movie. Helena, with a new perspective on people and purpose (shown to her by Indy throughout the film) returns the favor and brings him back to the present. It all tied in so well.

Loved the third act. Honestly I didn't "really" expect them to time travel at all even though it was hinted since the beginning (but then again I remember Crystal Skull's 3rd act). The thing about Indiana Jones being tied up, I really liked the moment he discovered about continental drift and the way the movie showed it with the props. Sure it isn't much and doesn't change the plot's course, but it's revelation is to show that Indy's always been one step ahead from the bad guys.

I loved the movie, but I was pretty disappointed on how they handled Mutt and Marion. Mutt isn’t the best character but he had room to grow, and I think just getting rid of him to serve the story wasn’t exactly necessary. I just think they could’ve found another explanation as to why Indy is down instead of what they did. The movie wasn’t exactly a happy ending unlike LC and Crystal Skull

Honestly, how they dealt with his age was my favorite part of the movie. It wasn’t a throwaway joke like Crystal Skull. You can see that he is hurting both physically and mentally. Another great Ford performance.

I didn't have any problem with Helena knocking out Indy; he's in his 70s, she's her prime, and has shown she's not incapable of looking after herself. To be honest, I enjoyed the film a lot. IHelena was good. I imagined my main problem would be with the young boy character, but he was good, too. One thing that actually caught me by surprise, in a good way, was they didn't let Indy stay in the past. It seemed to be teasing that all along with Indy feeling out of place and alone in the 1960s. What they did was more of a twist ending, and reconciling with Marion gave him a purpose to be in his present. As for Indy being tied up, it never really occurred to me until Chris mentioned it, so I guess it didn't bother me at all.

My problem with the movie is it follows this current trend of making childhood heroes into these broken, beaten down men. They did it with Luke, mostly did it with Han Solo, and now they've done it to Indy. Sometimes I wish the heroes could simply remain heroes. Indy's always had a joy for what he does, but it's barely visible in this one, except for the ending. The reliance on CGI for pretty much everything is also a bit of a bummer. It also felt needlessly harsh in how it just killed off people (not in terms of brutality), but that's not terribly uncommon in the Indy franchise

Well there’s good thematic reasons to explore these themes surrounding the ultra macho movie hero through the modern lens. There’s not much else they can explore with these old characters. I’m not opposed to portraying the harmful effects of the old action hero masculinity, it’s just as you mentioned with Luke though, rarely do these characters feel the same after many years cause of new writing or ignorance to source material. So instead of feeling like a breakdown of their original macho hero character it just feels like a complete dismantling of the character.

Didn't exactly care for the grandfather paradox they used to show how the dial was created, but thought it was interesting that Voller assumes he can change time, but finding Archimedes' grave proves that the timeline is set and they can only go through the motions of what's already happened.

I'm usually very critical but this movie was so much fun it took me back to to 1975 when l watched Jaws in the theater. I loved how the people around me were yelling and clapping it made me smile. The de-aging process is scary how good it looked it's pretty mind blowing. $300 million before promotion is not sustainable and movies like this will eventually go away so watch them while you still can.

Actually, that's a bit of a play. When Indy really presses her on why she memorized her father's diary, she gives BS answer. Indy shakes his head and says, "Nobody does that just for money." ... or something like that... implying that while she does do things for money, there is a heart in her that he sees. It's one of the moments that comes and goes so quickly that it's really easy to miss. It's why in my review I really leaned in on how many problems could have easily been solved with just a little more conversation that wasn't shouted out between chase scenes. Some small fine tuning would have made this a vastly different film.

I didn't need to look past the ending. I thought it was perfect for a guy who had been chasing history his whole life. It's the one moment he got to just sit back and take it all in. And I would have been totally satisfied if he died in ancient Sicily becoming a part of the history he loved so much. Thankfully, the writer gave him a happier ending than I would have.

Just a weird nitpick, but I don't think Indy is supposed to be 80. Harrison Ford is, but not the character. Indy was a teenager in 1912, when the prologue of Crusade happens, so in 1969, he's about 70. This fits well with his retirement too.

So glad you brought up, for as briefly as you had, THE BOOKS. You took me back… i was in 8th grade, and the teacher was demanding all us kids get a book to read in class…. Me being a kid who didn’t like to read, I struggled to find a story that i could enjoy. Thats when i found Secret Of The Sphinx. I can imagine the first 3 chapters of that book so vividly in my head…. Great stuff.
