The Crystal Cathedral congregation needed a strong CEO outside of the Schuller family back in 70's and 80's. This Cathedral was not built safely. As the man said it's not up to current building codes. No air-conditioning and in Southern California and boy did the Hazel organ pay for that!! Numerous articles about how some of the organ pipes melted and birds nested in some of the big pipes.

Schuller ran a private congregation and bankrupted it! That is the business cycle!! Now the cathedral is just that, what she was supposed to be to carry out its true purpose!!

i worked just east of the cathedral, drove around grounds when it was a drive-in church. to me it always seemed like a self-glorificaton of schuler , especially as he kept expanding .

It's not "the most glass ever used to date in one structure". It might be the most glass ever used in one structure at the time of its construction in 1980, but today? No. Biosphere 2 constructed in 1984 encloses 204,000 cubic meters (7.2 million cubic feet). Crystal Cathedral encloses less than 5 million cubic feet. Also, built in 2013, New Century Global Centre in Chengdu is a glass structure 500 meters long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high. This could hold several Crystal Cathedrals inside it.

The church is not a building, but the baptized people, that conform it and that people need the installation for proper Christian liturgy and worship dictated by God!! Buildings are accidental!
