I grew up in a very small town in North Louisiana. A group of ladies drove across the country to see Reverend Schuller when he preached his last sermon at the Crystal Cathedral. All of us were astonished when they did it, but they loved him and had a great deal of respect for him. These weren’t young women either!!! Probably all at least in their mid to late 50’s. They still talk about that to this day.

Now that's what I call a bucket list road trip. I love that he was always so positive and uplifting. That's why it was especially sad that it all ended so negatively for him and his family.

@@TheGraveyardChannel The Hazel Wright Organ located in the former Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California - scheduled to be reconsecrated as the Roman Catholic "Christ Cathedral" in 2019[1] - is one of the world's largest pipe organs. As of 2008, it had 270 ranks and 16,061 pipes, fully playable from two 5-manual consoles.[2] Funded by a $2 million gift from Hazel Wright, a viewer of the church's Hour of Power telecast, the organ was constructed by Fratelli Ruffatti, based on specifications by Virgil Fox and expanded by Frederick Swann. It incorporates the large Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ originally built in 1962 for New York's Avery Fisher Hall, and the Ruffatti organ which had been installed in the church's previous sanctuary in 1977.[3] Beginning in 1982, the year of the present organ's dedication, Frederick Swann was organist and music director at the cathedral. During his 16-year tenure (1982-1998), he was widely regarded as the most visible organist in the world as people in more than 165 countries worldwide saw and heard him playing this organ on the weekly Hour of Power televised episodes.[4] Following the Crystal Cathedral's final Hour of Power in June 2013, the organ was scheduled to be dismantled for a $2 million refurbishing, led by Fratelli Ruffatti, and then to be re-installed for the building's planned re-opening as Christ Cathedral.[5] After three decades of use and exposure to heat, sunlight and water damage, the organ was in need of extensive repair. The organ was removed in February 2014 over the course of a week and shipped to Padua, Italy for restoration. The organ was returned to California in May 2016, and re-installation is scheduled for late 2018.[6]

Even as a Catholic I used to enjoy listening to Robert Schuller's sermons on television whether given from an outdoor movie theater (where he got his start) or from inside the Chrystal Cathedral. I always found them to be very peaceful, informative and full of the love of Christ. Rest in Peace, Rev. Schuller.

I figured that Robert Schuller Jr. would have taken over his father's steps. Thanks for another great video and sharing such a beautiful place with all of us.

His son took over for a while, but it didn't work out. Then his daughter took over around the time of the last market crash and I read that they ended up filing for bankruptcy. It was a very sad ending to a church that Schuller had spent a lifetime building. Your trucking business has taken you to some very interesting places. You probably have a book in you from all of your adventures.
@robertcuminale1212
@robertcuminale1212 4 жыл бұрын
It didn't work out because Jr. wanted to go with a more Christian and Reformed liturgy and teaching. The Father disagreed with it and fired his son and took the pulpit back. Astounding stuff. The congregation calls and recalls pastors not the old pastor. The church was a member of the Reformed Church In America which is the descendant of the Dutch Reformed Church that came to America in 1628. Schuller got caught up in Norman Vincent Peale's man centered philosophy. Peale was the pastor of Marble Collegiate Church in New York City. Marble Collegiate was started in a barn off Wall Street in 1628 when the Classis of Amsterdam sent Jonas Michaelius to start worship services in the New Amsterdam colony. Peale was actually a Methodist Episcopal pastor at Bushwick M.E. Church when he was called. My grandfather and mother went to that church when he was the pastor there. Marble wanted a big name pastor and Peale wanted a bigger pulpit. When he left there he started Guideposts. The Crystal Cathedral's infighting between the Father and son and the the daughter caused the congregation to take sides and so many left that there wasn't enough money to pay the bills so it went on the auction block. Just some background. I grew up in the Dutch Church. My great great Uncle was president of the denomination. His son was President of the Seminary and oversaw the separation of Rutgers from the denomination. We have a few relatives teaching at the seminary and one was a temporary leader.

I was at the Crystal Cathedral 6 or 7 times with my son and daughter-in-law. What an experience! We went to see the “Glory of Easter”. What a magnificent show! And the Hazel Wright was very powerful. They had these 2 glass doors up by where Rev. Schuyler preached. While we were standing in line waiting for the next service, those doors were wide open and the organist was playing the “Tocatta from the 5th Symphony” by Charles Widor. On the very last note, when the organist lifted up his hands, the doors shut!! It was just amazing!! I also learned while I was there how terribly expensive it is to live in Orange County! My mom watched the Hour of Power program every Sunday for years after my dad's health began deteriorating. She really liked Dr. Schular and his sermons. In fact, she bought a couple of his books and sent money to the church several times. For donations, he offered little gifts. I don't remember what they were but they were always nice. She started watching the program before the Chrystal Cathedral was ever begun. There was one or two huge glass doors next to the pulpit that slid open so he could be seen by his congregation inside and out. For the congregation outside they pulled their cars in to the drive-in spots and used the speaker system. It was all so beautiful.

I didn’t even have a clue until I actually began attending and became a member of the Reformed Church much later..🙄very Beautiful! His epitaph “God loves you and so do we,” he would say that as a benediction at the closing of his sermons. Rev Schuller brought out the positive influences of the Christ patterned lifestyle and following Christs example, The beatitudes of the Holy Bible , and the overall amazing joy for the marvellous sacrifice Christ made for us all. Oh, and by the way.. it’s Job long O.. as in Joe. Not job as in an occupation. Thanks.👍

I was at the first Mass ever said in the “Crystal Cathedral” as it was named originally, before any of the renovation had occurred. A remarkable experience to witness that very real transition. The mass was televised and the Crystal Cathedral staff did all of the technical work for that, and their staff organist played a short concert on that astonishing organ that enveloped the entire structure. If you ever go back to do an update, I strongly recommend contacting the Cathedral office to get permission first-I’m sure they would be happy to give you a guided tour by someone who really knows the small details and pretty likely bring you to parts of the property you couldn’t get to otherwise.

I hesitated clicking on this but was interested more because I did not know Rev. Schuller was buried on the grounds. I thought it was going to be some cheesy, freaky normal type of "visit the grave" show. BUT THIS WAS FANTASTIC. This was a marvelous history lesson on the work of this marvelous man. Finding out Roger Williams AND MARIE CALLENEAR (whose pot pie I buy every week never giving a second thought to her journey) is buried here too! NOW I want to know more about her life and journey. This was really well done. Even your voice was the perfect backdrop to it all. I can not tell you how much this meant to me to see and remember and how I am even more Thankful for Robert Schuller and his work.

The church is beautiful. Glad the Catholics got it. On many Sundays, I would awake to Reverend Schullers music pipes and I would listen to him give his messages of hope until I finally got up. Never knew he was a televangelist. Always thought he was Methodist or Episcopalian. I did not know the pastor had passed on, he was on for so many years, must be on reruns here. Marie Colander Lemon meringue Pie is the best, glad she didn't take it with her. Thanks!

I grew up watching HOP with Pastor Robert H. Schuller preaching. Arvella speaking about the music that'd be played and the awesome choir singing. His sermons made you feel good and uplifted. The performances of, The Glory Of Christmas and The Glory Of Easter. I remember he even had it on cable as a PPV. I ordered and recorded it one time. Sadly, today we don't have much of the positive sermons or songs that speak and uplift ones spirit. I continued to watch until one day I couldn't find it. A sad day. I missed him and his son Robert A. and grandson Robert V. preaching. Yes I witnessed the beginning of the decline and competition among the siblings. I thought it would go to Robert V. since the argument between Dad and son. I never knew it had been sold. until I watched a Palm Sunday Prayer for Ukraine at Christ Cathedral. I was shocked and sad. I did watch a video on the update of remodeling. I'm like Oh No! But they have done a nice job. I always liked Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee and This Is The Day The Lord Has Made, Let Us Rejoice In It at start of service. And In Your Rising Up, In Your Lying Down, In Your Labor And In Your Leisure as his benediction. From start to finish it was positive. By the way the cross on the Hope Center is 90 feet tall. The tallest cross in the world. There we're arguments that it wouldn't work. After adjustments it WORKED. From miles around one can see it in the distance. During the 1990's Dr. Schuller started a donation drive of two or three different donation tiers for the Memorial Garden, that you so beautifully presented to us. People of all faiths and life donated and they could leave a memoriam if a loved one. Each square would be inscribed on the walk. If they wanted to be buried or have an Urn placed in a barium/niche, or have a plaque on a memorial wall they could. In any case, in a couple of years they broke ground to what we just saw. Heavenly, peaceful. And yes, a place to meditate among the soft waters falling. I knew Robert and Arvella we're buried there. Marie Challendar I did not. Love her pies. I knew Roger Williams was. I loved when he played so beautiful. It was like he had called upon the angels to commune with us. I think White Eagle is also buried there. He during the 1980's would always sing Amazing Grace. He could make me tear up. I was saddened and heartbroken when Dr. Schuller announced his passing. I wouldn't be surprised if some of his guest are or have arrangements when their time comes. I always wondered what it looked like. So I want to thank you for sharing your video of the garden. A place I hope many want to visit and see the architectures that graces the land where Rev. Robert H. Schuller preached from. One thing that can never be taken away is our memories. God Bless each of you wherever you are. ♥️🙏✝️😇🌹

I began attending the Crystal Cathedral the second week it was opened in 1980. My wife and I were New Hope telephone counselors, and we were married in the chapel at the top of the Tower of Hope. We went to the first Glory of Christmas and Glory of Easter programs. My father-in-law, a Catholic, loved the Crystal Cathedral and Dr. Schuller. Dr. Schuller was one-of-a-kind. We are so sad at the way two of his daughters and their husbands behaved. He and Arvela were disinvited from leadership, as was his son Robert Anthony.

Loved that this came up in my recommendeds while I watched the re-dedication ceremony that occurred last weekend. They had JUST built the memory gardens the last time I was there, and I always assumed that Dr. Schuller and Arvella would be in that massive red marble sarcophagus at the entrance. I was shocked to see them off to the side. My family came to The Glory of Christmas and The Glory of Easter several times. I think these presentations had a major effect on my dad, who was not very religious, and was baptized shortly before he passed away. Dr Schuller provided "a way in" for people who were maybe overwhelmed by coming to a church building in person, or maybe wanted to avoid the usual drama that accompanies a congregation (unfortunately), or just were curious but didn't want to commit, as well as shut-ins and the disabled. First the drive-in and then the massive television outreach sent his simple spiritual messages to people all over the world. Love this place, and so glad it lives on, open to anyone who wants to visit.

If it was the 70's , it wasn't the Crystal Cathedral but his first church building which had a glass retracting wall for the people in the parking lot to participate with those seated in the pews. The current campus didn't exist in the form you see in the video until the 1980's . I do not think they had a cemetery until the 1980's or 90's. The new owners (Roman Catholic) have some agreement to preserve the graves sites and monuments. I'm not sure about the fountains and statuary.

The shot seen at 7:47 of the mosaic niches, contains the cremains of vocalist Thrul Ravenscroft, best known as the voice of Tony the Tiger, and who sang, "you're a mean one, Mr Grinch," from the classic cartoon "The Grinch that Stole Christmas." His face and voice can also be heard as one of the grim gray ghosts at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. (Also, the statue of Job, is pronounced joeb.) Marie Callender's food products are delicious. My parents saw the Crystal Cathedral back in the 1980's. Very impressive. Schuller's sermons were quite unique. Hello, Steve in SanDiego here. I grew up in OC from 1965-1989, and I had a history w Robert Schuler . My partners mother was remarried in 1980 by Robert Schuler, in the crystal cathedral, she actually purchased a glass panel in the church for $5,000 and our names where in the church. We used to attend the massive Christmas shows, with live animals each year too.

Steve: I saw the comment below about Roger Williams. Let me say you could never meet a nicer person! I met him once as well as Liberace, both very nice gentlemen. What is so ironic about the Crystal Cathedral is that Roger Williams, who volunterred on the piano and was rudely "fired" by Shiela Schuller Coleman, was very wealthy and loved the Crystal Cathedral. If anyone had approached him with the churches problems, I am sure Roger would have been happy to bail them out! He certainly had the funds. But, he had no knowledge of the situation, and I recorded the video where he was interviewed about the church and tears came to his eyes as he talked about it. Also, ROBERT H. SCHULLER is NOT to blame for the loss of the church! In the early 1990's, Schuller's dementia got worse and Robert Anthony had to help him through the service so the elder Schuller would know what to do. Although Robert H. remained as "Chairman of the Board" he was not very cognizant of what was going on because of his dementia, and the Schuller daughters talked him into firing their brother, Robert Anthony and giving their husbands very high paying jobs. Dr. Robert H Schuller had no idea of the trouble, debtwise and other things that happened in the church because of his health. He cannot be blamed for what happened.

Catching up on all of your videos and just loved this one. God has always been constant, in my younger years and now, and so was The Crystal Cathedral. Mom always had it on, every Sunday and loved the moments that Roger Williams was a guest. I never knew there was a cemetery on the property, nor did I know that Mr. Williams rests there, as well as the Schullers. It's really too bad, what took place between Robert Schuller and his son, which made them have to let go of this beautiful dream. We started watching, prior to this great building being built. He was in the smaller chapel/Church at that time, and we remember him talking about this, and then it was getting built and then there it was. Quite a life, quite a dream and it was filled to capacity and beyond, every Sunday. Mr. Schullers son and Grand son still preach, but are in their own Churches. It really should have stayed in the Schuller family and I'm sure that was Robert Schullers intention, but things and life, went in another direction. Everything has to have it's time and then make room for something else. We are not to hang onto these things but onto the memories and the people that were a part of these things. May the Schullers rest in peace. Well done. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4PZmnyJeapod5o

Fascinating! I have known about the Crustal Cathedral and Robert Schuller ever since it started. I went to the Cathedral many times to attend services. It happens that I met Richard Unfried, the Cathedral's organist, several times, since I was a church organ student in a California college, and when I went to the Cathedral's services, I would say hello to Mr. Unfreid, and he would let me briefly play the Cathedral's 4-manual pipe organ. For a young college student, that was a HUGE thrill! Another interesting person I sort of crossed paths with Marie Callender - who is interred at the Crystal Cathedral. I lived in Orange County for much of my childhood, and spent a fair amount of that early time in a trailer park in Huntington Park where my parents lived in a trailer park - like Marie Callender in her earlier days! I haven't been able to find out if it was the same trailer park Ms. Callender was in but it's certainly possible!
