Every day (except Sundays), the students at Christ's Hospital march into lunch to the sound of the School Band.
Christ's Hospital, often known as The Blue Coat School is near Horsham West Sussex and aims to provide an excellent education to students whose parents cannot afford normal private education.
They have a thriving music school, theatre group, well equiped Art and Design school and focus on sport as well as providing a first class education.
I hope you find this short video interesting. I am an ex-student.
All rude remarks will be removed.

I love the whole concept, equality, togetherness, discipline and cheerfulness, it reminds me of the famous phrase, -all for one, one for all - I would have loved it if would have been member of this school community. And for those who are attending the school now:- make the best of it, make every day a worth while day, you will remember those early school days for many, many years to come. We in Holland would say:- a day without a laugh, is a day not lived Cheers to all of you

This may be buried in the stack of comments but the march played is Semper Fidelis by Sousa, the branch march of then USMC.
@frereM
@frereM 5 жыл бұрын
The school band seem to have a predilection for the marches of Sousa, having used "The Washington Post" in the past. In any case, Semper Fidelis = Forever Faithful, which seems appropriate enough more than 400 years after the death of the school's founder, King Edward VI.

My son Christopher Tambling thoroughly enjoyed his time in Peel A and made the most of his talents playing Organ in both Big School and the Chapel where the Lord Mayor of London gave him his ARCO Certificate. He went on to hold the record of being the youngest (14) to play his own composition on the Albert Hall Organ, when CH were asked to give a display at the Nat West Brass Band Championships in 1978. He was on a Presentation from the Hon. Company of Master Mariners.

Wow! Such dedication on such young faces! Dare I say it, coming from my ancient mind, but don't those young women look sexy with their marching tone? At first I thought it was some American military school vamping it up before they go up to the academy - they look so serious! But then again, I guess they were hungry - who wouldn't march at double quick pace to get some grub down? Every credit to everyone involved - it brought a smile to my face and had me feeling we can feel assured that some part of our young society will be well prepared to take up the slack as we older guys move into retirement.

Our son Cavan Plant gained a scholarship with honours to this fine school. However, he decided to stay ay at West Buckland School in North Devon where he also gained a scholarship and thrived both academically and socially. Would have liked to have seen him wearing his 'Housey' and he would definitely have made the school band as a saxophonist. He went on to university earning a 2.1 BSc with honours in Chemistry and is presently completing his Masters.

This fascinates me - does the *whole* school march to lunch on the set days, and does everyone in Christ's Hospital know how to play a musical instrument? Does everyone in the school march in step perfectly? Does the school ethos tend to produce c/Conservatives and does it tend to produce people who are successful in the armed forces?
@jpptubie
@jpptubie 6 ай бұрын
The whole school marches in, and in my days, when it rained, we went via the Tube to the dining room. Not everyone learns to play a musical instrument, I didn’t but I wish I’d taken up the opportunity to. The marching in step is pretty good, see this and other videos. The school gave me confidence, and although many go to university, we left feeling we could pursue our ambitions whatever they were. I know some went into the armed forces. This isn’t a posh school like Eton, but a school where they try to add value to the students that allows them to achieve goals beyond their original expectations.

Quite good actually, in step arms swinging the right height but when calling out the pace it should never be "Left, left, left, left right left" calling it that way means you have to take a left pace three times! I joke of course but an Army drill instructor would never permit that. It should simply be "Left right - left right - left right - Leeffft" a pause and then again if needed the same tempo repeated.

I should add if Labour get in power and charge VAT on public school fees, the proportion of pupils benefitting from scholarships will have to go down as more full fee-paying pupils will probably have to increase. How did you even see how that happened? I watched it on slow three times and can't see in all the mess how the shoe came off. I see the shoe but not how it came off. I do see that those kids are sagging the only way they can since they can't actually sag their pants. Makes the belts kind of useless having them down around their thighs!

i have an eagle eye :) i can see loads of little things they do to each other, like at 2:34 the guy fixes the guys collor in front so he doesn't get into trouble. 03:41 the guy at the back his belt has slipped down and is around his knees lol.

Shame about the teacher-sanctioned bullying and all the stupid petty rules and traditions that made my time and many others' there needlessly miserable... At least it taught me to hate God and the Queen. This marching was so pointless. I skipped it by running round to the back doors of dining hall whenever I could. That awful uniform... The school is embroiled in a paedophile scandal now involving the priest and my history teacher from 20 years ago

@baptist44 Hahaha, no no. The blonde girl who is doing the shouting posted that from my KZbin account. She's my flatmate at university where I'm reading Geography and City Planning. Just thought you might to know so you can alter your preconceived notions about me.

This is not a military school and they do damn fine. The left and right wheels are pretty smart for civilians. And I love it that they are playing The Washington Post Match by John Phillip Sousa! But those shoes and yellow stockings...ugh!

Very cool. Being from the States I found this to be very odd. What is the purpose of the robes? Sadly this sort of school would never do here b/c the ol' ACLU would never allow it--to structured for them.

Nope, not true at all. A school like this would be very successful here. The competition to get accepted would be huge.

They have simply kept the same uniform for the whole of the school's existence. It is Tudor-style robes and stockings that have been the school's uniform for approximately 460 years.

Umm except it's no longer like that :'( the school's gone money mad...and the staff or whatever keep spending the "little" money they have on crap like better looking bins and chairs for your posture that don't even work, rather than for better chefs or better teachers :S

why is it called a hospital?
@miapendragon5931
@miapendragon5931 6 жыл бұрын
mccartherable The word hospital (originally) didn't necessarily mean what we know as a hospital nowadays. It's derived from the Latin hospitāles, which means guesthouse or shelter. The school was originally founded to help the poorer boys (and girls) of London receive an education, thus making it a sort of shelter for them.

My eldest daughter is in this video, and yes the majority of the students are white. My youngest daughter has just got in, 11 years on, and the majority of pupils are non white. Point is, CH take their candidates on merit not; wealth, colour, religion. Their entrance system is extremely difficult, the candidates they choose are very talented.
