Could be that it was made by a smaller studio and directed by an indie director in addition to Bale not being a household name yet. Granted Daniel Day-Lewis won his first Oscar for what was essentially an indie project, but there was a lot of lobbying for his win due to his commitment to the role Whether one wants to argue that the Oscars are rigged or not, it's pretty much well-established at this point that the actual craft alone is not what gives a movie a nomination
