I can definitely appreciate that some Christians in their sincere (or insincere) effort to fulfil the great commission (to go out and make disciples) have not employed wisdom or love in so doing and rather push people away, but in essence both are true: Christians are commanded to go into the world, share the gospel, make disciples, make known the love of God but we are also told to be wise as serpents, gentle as doves and to do all things with Godly love. We also have to understand the constraints of our assignment - which is to share the good news of the gospel, not force it or try and actively change someone’s mind because this we do not have the power intrinsically to do - this is the work of the Holy Spirit. I pray the Lord draws them near and the Holy Spirit reveals the truth to them during their search for "spirituality." From what I’ve witnessed several time, almost all former Christians have the same “testimony” and when you hear them it all makes sense as to why they left--they never knew God. They all grew up in the church, they all went to Sunday school, all of their parents forced them to go to church, they all had bad experiences with people within those circles, etc. You never hear them talking about how a relationship with The Lord was cultivated in their personal time. I can empathize only because I went through the same thing and lost my faith for years because of it. I do believe The American church especially is partially to blame because there are many churches that are in error of teaching various false, half-truths Gospel. True discipleship is also absent in many churches, so many people literally don’t understand who God truly is and what it means to know Him outside of 2hrs in a church building per week and spending 3 minutes a day to pray for the money, car, love, house, etc that they want.

The former Christians seem to be reasoning from a point of trauma, which is very sad. Many people drift from Christianity because of the church and its traditions but it's important to remember that Christianity is about Christ. People are not perfect, the church is not perfect but throwing the baby (Christ) with the bath water (the church) is very problematic. It is crucial to see Christ through one's personal lens as not everyone who claims Christ will be Christ-like. A personal relationship with Christ is important, not necessarily relying on what people describe Christ to be. Read the bible for yourself.

As a Black woman who found my way back to my faith, I have total empathy for my sisters who've left Christianity. I get it. We have to accept that too many of our churches and fellow Christians are not welcoming to the stranger, that misogynoir is real and harmful, and frankly too many preachers and their congregations DO NOT know the Bible the way they should. If you're still reading the KJV, then you're missing a LOT of the nuances from the Hebrew, Greek and Latin. We also need to understand that religious trauma is REAL, and not dismiss it or talk about those who've experienced it as if they're at fault. Faith should strengthen and HEAL us, not make us feel unworthy or damaged. A true faith allows questions and being okay with not always knowing and being human. Dogma demands obedience. The ex-Christian women's body language isn't "dark" or defensive - it's the body language of ABUSE. These women were waiting to be attacked, because they already have been. It's interesting how so many Christian posters in this thread completely missed that, in their zeal to brag about how "personal" their relationship with Jesus is.

Well… they are put under scrutiny. It’s just that the methods used are different. Christians (particularly the ones who believe the Bible is inerrant) only use the Bible and their own person experiences with God as sources of truth. Secular folks tend to use the Bible, science, philosophy, history, and other subjects to come up with their arguments against the faith. So naturally, it may feel like claims that go against your god’s existence are unscrutinized but really it’s a matter of not having or using the same materials to defend your stance. And also secular knowledge attained through the scientific method are more convincing because they are replicable. A lot of claims by Christians can’t be proven by the scientific method.

Mad respect to the christian ladies with how you answered questions and were transparent about your relationship with Christ. Throughout this discussion I couldn't help but notice that all the former christian ladies had something in common. They put their trust in people, denominations and a building and not actually pursuing Jesus for themselves. I'm not belittling what they went through because I know that had to of been very difficult. However, what they're saying is is they adhered to the christian belief at one time but they put their trust in an inferior source, which was man. So what they claimed to be persuasive and true was later determined by circumstances and experiences that convinced them otherwise.

The Believers were very clear that the Bible in of itself does not contradict, yet the former Christian women were still giving examples of how the Bible and God's word can be misinterpreted, thereby bringing about contradictions. That was not the point. She erected her own series of strawmans to attack and still could provide no detail. 7:54 The whole book of Exodus is about God freeing slaves. Hebrews endured horrible slave conditions like blacks in America. The audience of the New Testament was Jewish and those familiar with Jewish customs. The slavery that is referred to in the New Testament was a different slavery system compared to what is described in American history and Exodus. The slavery referred to in the NT was equated to indentured servitude where a person would come into an agreement to be a slave along with their family to someone they were indebted to. Or they would ask to be a slave if this was a means to an end. I’m sure there were cruel individuals in this system but the system wasn’t predicated on cruelty like in American slavery. As a matter of fact according to Jewish customs during the Jubilee year (every 50th year) all slaves were to be set free and have their debts cleared. Meaning if you owed two years worth of wages and only became a slave 1 year before a Jubilee year, you would be set free and have a years worth of debt cleared. God does everything with intentionality as this system is representative of what happens when we give our lives to Christ. No matter when you come to him or how long you have been working to spread his gospel here on earth, when he returns or when you die, whichever comes first, you receive eternal rest with him. Praying for all these women that they become truths seekers so they can defend the faith from more than just an experiential perspective but with facts, and for those that have drifted praying God will call them and that they will have a prodigal daughter experience and come to know the true love of God 💖🙏🏽

This was wonderful Dr. Daf! I am a daughter of God and just wanted to hug each of these ladies as I have been down that road and it is rooted in pain. They have been hurt by imperfect people and are claiming those actions to be of God. Something I learned about people and those who use religion and the Bible to do bad is that it's two different things. You have imperfect people using a tool of good to confuse and harm others. Confusion and harm are not of God. It's no different than using a hammer. If you use it for its purpose(to hit a nail) it is good. However, if you use it to hit someone it is bad. The intention matters but does that make the tool itself bad? NO. It is the user who has used it in a way that it was not meant to be used. Blessing!

The church requires us to tithe yet that puts pastor in a position to legally manipulate people to pay for their lavish lifestyle. Watching this video, I couldn't help but reflect on how divisive the statement 'Christianity is the only true religion' really is. This mindset showcases the entitlement some Christians have adopted, often at the expense of understanding and dialogue. It's ironic considering that Jesus, the central figure of Christianity, was not a Christian. He was a deeply spiritual man who frequently challenged the religious elite of His time. If anything, Jesus would have called out the very dogmatic attitudes we see today. The Christian women in this video unfortunately came across as uncritical followers, repeating doctrines without deeper reflection. This highlights a broader issue: the lack of knowledge among people of African descent about their own history. While we’ve been freed physically from oppression, many remain mentally shackled by the ideologies of their oppressors. As for the host, it was disappointing to see little effort to create a meaningful discussion. A conversation titled 'The Bridge' should aim to educate and connect, not widen divides. Instead, this felt more like 'The Cliff,' pushing people further apart. It was a missed opportunity to foster understanding and growth. We must do better-both as individuals and as communities-by educating ourselves and challenging the narratives we’ve inherited. True spirituality, as exemplified by Jesus, is about liberation, compassion, and questioning the systems that seek to confine us. --- A Former Christian and so glad about it. If Jesus was not a Christian than why should I . Now that's the question that should be asked.

For me, it's not about pain or anger. I believe in a God/ creator but i feel religion focuses too much of thinking we know everything because a book from ages ago said so, yet none of us have died to truly understand the afterlife we are dedicating our lives to. Christians worship Jesus, call out to Jesus, end prayers with "in the name of Jesus," which is idolatry as he was not the creator. Jesus was a man that claimed he was chosen by God, had people follow him, claiming to heal people. Centuries old cult leader that now is the model of how people live to respect their government, like how they were trained through religion.

I am still waiting for that lady in purple to name the contradictions within the Bible 🙄
@CoilyCodeКүн бұрын
Right😅 There are no contradictions. If you read the Bible looking for something wrong with it, you will not find the truth. God will literally HIDE it from you because your heart is in the wrong place. Why would He reveal Himself to someone who’s committed to doubting Him?
@bluegiraffe200Күн бұрын
I mean the bible is a two edged sword it was created to be contradictory in my opinion not saying Jesus was contradictory or God is but the bible was written by many different men it has many perspectives!
@CoilyCodeКүн бұрын
@ “a two edged” sword does not mean contradictions. With that, I’d love an example of a contradiction? Also, the only perspective it’s written from is God’s. Remember, all scripture is breathed by God. No scripture is from any man’s private interpretation.

The lady in the purple speaks from pain. She's very aggressive. She doesn't have peace about her decision

Why did God sacrifice his son, but did not forgive him and let him live so that the world would be peaceful forever?

I so enjoyed this discussion. I’m hopeful for a pt.2 As a disciple of Christ ( Christian) these past few years spending time with my Heavenly Father I’ve grown so close to Him and he has shaped so many of my worldly views for the good to His views. The common thread I see from the opposing side is some people are comfortable with sin it’s not what people have done to them its the lifestyle that one wants to live in and the Bible is very clear on the lifestyle God wants us to live, which is a godly lifestyle ( read the word to find out more) . So one can’t say people were judging them are such and such treated them this way that way( I have been judged in many bad ways from folks of the church but I didn’t allow satan to allow me to stray from God because of the relationship I have with Him) it’s the Bible is the ultimate judge. However, I do appreciate them sharing . One of the things I wanted to mention is the three ladies on the opposing side who no longer believe in Christ the one in the white shirt she appeared to be very angry and that was disturbing to me. One should be able to get the view across without being angry, and they were there to here ones views, and she didn’t want to share it and she was angry when the other ladies said Yes this is why we are here please explain. Over all again, wonderful conversation. 💜🙏🏾💜 #Christisreal

Unfortunately I believe the Christians could have dealt with the SA lady better. She literally opened up about her being abused as a child, and that pastors kids lady just jumped to talk about her own experiences . Thats an area we need to be better at as a church . Have compassion and acknowledge the pain of others, like GENUINELY. We all live in a fallen world, and experience the pain of it. Being a Christian doesn’t mean you are better than others. You are now a saint who was a sinner. Weap with those who weap and rejoice with those who rejoice . Words without action mean nothing 🙏🏾

Wow Dr. Daf! This is an interesting concept, and will be a tough listen for me as a Christian woman. I love our Lord and have a hard time understanding those who don’t 😢 they often say horrible things. That said, I will give it a try and will be back with my feedback.
@usemann3640Күн бұрын
They often say the truth, because they are not brainwashed. If you were born in a muslim country you would be muslim and not christian. So your parents and environment shift and forms you to who to believe in
@CambieSweetsКүн бұрын
Interesting, because it’s usually Christian’s who say and have done the worst things to people. The fact that you have a “hard time understanding” shows your lack of awareness and empathy because that requires understanding.

One thing is for sure, people need to understand being raised in church AKA attending church services as a child, joining the choir or playing instruments are NOT the same thing with having a PERSONAL & INTENTIONAL relationship with The Lord Jesus: this is a heart issue. No matter what they’ve experienced in church or personal disappointments they’ve endured, GOD IS STILL GOOD. The question is, do we know and trust His Love? Do we care to be patient even when we don’t understand and believe that God will not fail us, because GOD CANNOT FAIL. People weaponize anything they can, but it doesn’t make God the enemy. And sometimes it’s truly our own pride that makes it impossible to be pliable and meek.
@luvstarrkage8089Күн бұрын
The reality is that if you consider yourself a former Christian, it suggests you were never truly a Christian to begin with. When you are genuinely saved by Jesus Christ, that transformative encounter is unforgettable. There’s no way you can honestly say, "I am no longer a Christian." While it's true that some may experience spiritual struggles, become lukewarm, or backslide, the concept of being a "former Christian" doesn't align with the true nature of salvation. If you’ve truly encountered Christ, that relationship endures. Hebrews 6:4-6 " For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt".
@HimmiefanКүн бұрын
Let's try having some grace and empathy because many if not all of those who call themselves former Christians do so because someone has hurt them. Instead of judging, let's be kind.
@alishaendre616Күн бұрын
I think it’s insensitive of you to assume that these people were never truly saved. Who are you to say that a backslide doesn’t take years? Who are you to determine how far that backslide goes? Let me remind you of the words of Christ: “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” God bless you.

Agreed and that's a scriptural statement. "It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you-unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place." 1 Corinthians 15:2

in my personal opinion both sides were "Christians" just on different parts of their journeys. The Christians that defined themselves as "former" are all struggling with unreconciled trauma & church hurt. And instead of assigning it to the individuals themselves or to the overall culture of that particular community - they blamed Christianity as a whole. Both sides were right in everything they said. They are actually 2 sides of the same coin...
