Actually it's rather really simple... but he serves the music perfectly and applies tasteful patterns that others in this subgenre are unable to execute because they've dumbed-down their playing to boring shoegaze. So yeah, I guess he's on a different level... LOL

@@TheWitchOvAgnesi Simple can me misunderstood I think, I guess you dont mean that. Mgla´s music in generall is kept "simple", but very interesting and hypnotic. I guess thats their style and how they build up that big fanbase.
@TheWitchOvAgnesi5 жыл бұрын
@@molletre9606 What I meant by simple is that his playing style and technique is rather straightforward and he's not doing anything that most death or black metal drummers can't already do. The thing that seems to be throwing people off about him is his cymbal work, but that is simply because few other drummers today are focusing on that aspect of the drums. Most post-black drummers have 4 piece kits with two cymbals, a ride and a hi-hat. Likewise, most of the people who are into mgla are probably also into ambient black metal like Alceste, versus more technical bands like Anorexia Nervosa (just to name French bands). Finally, the tempos they play at are not extreme. They're not pushing 270-280 like the Belphegors or Fleshgods of the scene are. The fact remains though, Darkside has written drum parts that are perfect for the song. And that is what makes the band so amazing, because not that many can accomplish what they have done, given how simple their music is. It just works as you can see from the rabid fanbase (of which I am now a part).

Mgła created masterpiece with this album, you're probably right to assume they have christian background since most of people in Poland were raised in catholic families. I think whole album is about losing faith, losing direction in life. You've seen album cover. This is how they see humanity. We are lost in the woods, naked, terrified, screaming, wandering aimlessly for there is no guidance nor goal nor meaning... like pictured in their lyrics. You should really listen to whole piece in order because songs are creating somewhat coherent story. What comes after 'woe, fear and guilt' here? You want to change your ways, but you fail 'self crucified, missed the right tree...' I think main idea behind their lyrics in this album is 'There is no God, and I can't stand it'

Actually polish literature (poets especially) was written by people who have died before the age of 30 due to the war. A War-torn country, occupation by a brutal foreign force, death everywhere... and these young poets fought, and almost all subsequently died, before even reaching age 25. The hopelessness during the time actually triggered most of the literature. Since nihilistic perspective in life. It's actually tragic really.

Something to think about concerning the last "verse." If you are familiar with Game of Thrones, Tyrion makes a statement that has stuck with me, or the meaning of it anyway. Something like "If you wear your faults or disabilities (sins even?) as a suit of armor no one can ever use them as a weapon against you." I think this relates on a pretty much 1:1 level. Also, this guy's lyrics really are amazing

I'd also like to add that it seems to me that what's being explored here isn't really nihilism or ironic glorification of the negative, but rather an recognition of the necessary balance between light and dark and the willing acceptance of both sides of existence.

I take it a Willem reich's theory of 'emotional armour'. You store your negative feelings as muscle tension that becomes a kind of armour: it numbs you to the world. For me the song progresses from 'work, craft, life' being activities whose effects we have to ignore. Blessed be the woodworkers, building things of murder. Ignoring these horrendous effects leads us to blessed be the lies. Our coping strategies for ignoring the effects. Which leads us to the feelings that 'come from within'. Negativity that we numb ourselves too by making a muscular armour, and then making our craft a coat of arms to adorn the armour: proudly proclaiming our work (and thus our sins) to the world. Ultimately this leaves us hollow. Unfeeling monsters where once humans lived. Reich was the first psychiatrist to combine muscular massage with therapy.

It was a bit repetative but thats typical with black metal. The change up to the riff (4:55 in the video) was very good though. I really like their vocals. As with alot of good black metal there is a very hypnotic quality to the riffing, whats neat is that its not overly reliant on tremolo picking as you see with alot of black metal. You definitely can't call these guys "progressive" but all the same they are moving beyond the standard black metal patterns and have managed to forged a unique sound that still hews very close to the traditions of old school black metal. 9/10. Strength from within seems to be the main lyrical focus of the song, which is not suprising. Its a primary principle of satanism that power comes from within and inner strength and power to be celebrated. You could say, you are your own God. From a self empowerment standpoint its actually a pretty positive message. Sori picked up on it after a few seconds but the mixing was really interesting at the end. Emperor for example would have pushed that much further forward in the mix to enhance the atmosphere. I get the feeling that MGLA on the other hand didn't want to sacrifice the brutality so its a little buried in the back of the mix. Very subtle but a pretty smart choice I think! Is he embodying nihilism though? I thought the title of the song might refer to the futility of putting your faith in someone other than yourself, a point he actually makes in the song. I wonder if Mr. MGLA would consider that nihilism? I think part of it is that. But he also talks about the strength of self. Thats not necessarily a nihilistic way of thinking. I did find it interesting that you skipped over the main lines which defined the song in my opinion "For these ones, didn't need any outside source. For these ones come from within." The next lines which you mentioned "grown from within, an invincible stronghold, adorned with death". Seem to indicate a pessimistic take on things, but only from the perspective of a christian I think. But I'd be interested to hear a satanists thoughts on these few lines. Pretty deep stuff. You talked about the Nazi thing, I guess you never read that study they did on this very topic which I feel like disproves your notion that we follow authority figured toward evil because its in our nature. Read up on The Milgram Experiment. The really interesting thing this found was that to a person, every single person they did the study on made a decision to stop hurting people when commanded to do so. They only continued to hurt people when convinced it was the right thing to do. So the real problem with a cult of personality like Hitler is that he was able to convince people that it was for the good of germany and its people to do these things. It sounds insane in our modern society. But I think over and over you can find examples throughout history of incredibly charismatic figures that are able to convince people to do terrible things because these people belief what they are doing is actually the "good" thing. To me this further indicates that people on the whole tend towards wanting to do good. That doesn't mean they know what the "good" thing IS, but intent is indicative of our moralistic tendencies. Also Wintersun-Loneliness (Winter)

Exercises in Futility is actually the title of the album and every song on it, with only a Roman numeral from I to VI for each song. As for your points and thoughts (nicely formulated, I must say). They are a nihilistic band, just check the rest of the lyrics. For example, Exercises in Futility VI ends with: "As if all this was something more than another footnote on a postcard from nowhere, another chapter in the handbook for exercises in futility..." I'd like to read more of your comments about the lyrics of theirs.

First time heard this band, but had I quick look at the lyrics of this album and when I read your comment my first thought was "wait a minute, why would a Christian 'love' a band that sends a clear message about pointlessness and futility of human life". Then I realized that it's the same kind of depressive attitude I get from Vin and many other Christians - giving up on humanity being able to stand on its own; escaping into supernatural stories; gambling on a chance that some supernatural being will bring salvation, eternal afterlife, bestow a meaning onto a failure of finding a meaning on one's own. Defeat, capitulation, cowardliness, extinguished thoughts, artificial barriers, smothered independence, death of creativity, misplaced trust, guaranteed victim-hood, a failure of life force against entropy. It's all there in Christianity as a religion. It's all in the Bible. Like a mist meant to make sure that self-awareness and consciousness will never find a way out from their bounds. Or maybe I get it wrong and Mgla is singing about the glory of Jesus.
@BLeeFAFO6 жыл бұрын
Lmfao, That's a very eloquent and long winded point of view, But hey, If that's what it appears to be to you, No worries. But just as you've described non-Theists as not being all alike, Neither are obviously all Christians. Your own perceptions and pre-judgements might have cast you into the same dichotomy you described above. I mean why else would you constantly comment or hang around doling out criticism of people you know practically nothing about? Seems like it's own "Exercises In Futility" right there. But, Nonetheless, I actually smile when I see you pop up. Now pardon me while I go back to my corner, hang upside down, And blast Pornography on stun ;)
@LeelooMinai6 жыл бұрын
@Brent Lee: I do not "constantly comment" - I sometimes comment, if I feel a need to express my opinion to counter-balance a view that bothers me. In this case, I have no idea who you are, and I simply used your comment to address more general concepts. As to the Christians not being all alike: seems to me that, at the core, all Christians should/would, by default, relinquish the fate of their existence to the gods they have chosen to believe in. Unless you are some kind of a special Christian that does not believe that Biblical gods, Jesuses and the other bunch are superior (and existing) beings; maybe having an alternative-idea that you can do what you please without them eventually judging you and dispatching into a "place" of their choosing? In such case: wouldn't make much sense to call yourself a Christian any more, would it? In the view of this I would say that noticing parallels between Christianity and nihilism is a fair game. Also, so it is clear: it's not me claiming not-provable; it's not me claiming belonging to some special category of people (like Christians,) but since some people call themselves that and claim being special this way (and have no problems trying to spread this idea in the society, often oppressing their own kind on the way, in subtle and less subtle ways) I see no reason to expect no criticism of their claims. ...but to be fair: you can criticize me for the faults of the category I belong to also: homo sapiens that is. However, note that my own claim is that Christians are not different than other people. As everyone, they do not have a clue about the meaning behind the universe, existence of gods, and anything of ultimate scope that, currently, is not understood by human kind. It's unknown and nothing more. To everyone. I put myself not as someone special with respect to Christians, but as equal in this regard. You want to seek a dichotomy in this position too? Is that not acceptable for you too?

Thanks a lot. Did second this multiple times. They're amazing. My first choice though I've never seen here. Allegaeon: Proponent for sentience III the Extermination. Please try them. Sophisticated technical metal. Brutal riffing and excellent soloing. A nice mix of growling and singing.

You guys should actually listen to the entire Album as a whole, it´s the most supreme black metal journey. Always when i listen to a mgwa song i have to listen to the whole thing, because it´s just such a well crafted, congrous piece of art.

Actually the guys from Mgla don't hide their identities... The philosophy behind coming masked on stage is not a marketing thing like it is in the case of Batushka ( personal opinion ). M (the vocalist from Mgla) stated in an interview that their stage appearance is all about the music, not about flashy make-up or visuals. Let the music speak the visuals.

Seems like listening to Mgła was a very pleasing "exercise" for you. In my opinion, their previous album, With Hearts Toward None, is their finest, especially the song "With Hearts Toward None III". Catchy as HELL, possibly the catchiest black metal song EVER. As usual with MGŁA, thought provoking lyrics, I think it's their best song, and i'm still amazed how they pulled it off so well. Top notch. Give it a try.

13:05 Mgla's lyrics on this album are based on works of French-Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran. That's what I learned from one of the interviews.
